FORMER TEAMMATES NOW FOES FedExForum The Home of The Tigers The 2010-11 season marks the seventh for the Tigers in their home arena, FedExForum, which officially opened in September, 2004. Located just a few feet off Beale Street on historic Highway 61, FedExForum rises to extend the heart of the Memphis entertainment district. Memphis plays all of its 2010-11 home contests in the 18,400- seat arena. FedExForum was also the host site for the 2005-09 Conference USA Tournaments, 2009 NCAA Men s South Regional and 2010 NCAA Women s South Regional. At 135 feet high, FedExForum provides a new backdrop for historic Beale Street. The 805,850 square-feet arena, covering 13.8 acres, features five levels as well as state-of-the-art locker rooms and facilities for sports teams, as well as an exceptional dining and entertainment experiences for its patrons. When Memphis and Christian Brothers take the floor Tuesday, the contest will feature two sets of former teammates that will be foes for 40 minutes. Tiger freshman Joe Jackson and Bucs freshman Harry Green were teammates at White Station High School and helped lead the Spartans to a state title and two state runner-up finishes. Memphis sophomore Drew Barham and Christian Brothers freshman Dominic Fragale were teammates at Christian Brothers High School and helped the squad to three-straight state title game appearances. VETERANS VS. ROOKIES Tuesday s exhibition game is shaping up like a veterans-versus-rookies contest, with Christian Brothers being the more experienced squad. The Buccaneers return four starters and nine letterwinners, while Memphis returns two starters and six lettermen. To take it further, Christian Brothers has five players who saw action in 20 or more games last season returning, while Memphis has only two (Will Coleman, Wesley Witherspoon). TIGERS, BUCS WINNING STREAKS Tiger fans may be aware of their team s stretch of 10-straight winning seasons entering the 2010-11 campaign. Memphis season winning streak began with the 2000-01 campaign and is the third-longest streak of its kind in school history. On the other side, Christian Brothers brings a season winning streak of eight straight into 2010-11. The Buccaneers streak began in 2002-03. REBOUND, REBOUND, REBOUND That s what Tigers head coach Josh Pastner Capacity: 18,400 Open House: Sept. 6, 2004 First Event: Usher concert, Sept. 17, 2004 First Memphis Tiger event: Midnight Madness, Oct. 15, 2004 First Memphis exhibition game: vs. Christian Brothers, Nov. 6, 2004 (81-70, W) First Memphis regular season game: vs. Savannah State, Coaches vs. Cancer, Nov. 11, 2004 (102-40, W) Memphis record in FedExForum: 110-13 (.893 winning percentage) has been and continues to preach throughout the preseason. Memphis was out-rebounded in most of its games last season although the final stats revealed the Tigers were only slightly outworked on the boards by a -0.6 rebound margin. However, Pastner is making the boards a point of emphasis for this year s squad, and the players took it to heart in the first exhibition versus LeMoyne-Owen Nov. 3. Memphis won the battle on the glass versus the Magicians 50-23. In fact, the Tigers starting five out-rebounded LeMoyne-Owen 25-23. Christian Brothers may offer a tougher test, as the Buccaneers out-rebounded the Tigers in last year s exhibition 32-31. OH BROTHER, BROTHER Both Memphis and Christian Brothers have a set of brothers on each squad s roster. The Barton brothers Antonio and Will are both freshmen and will wear the Blue and Gray in 2010-11. For the visitors, brothers Zack and Syd Warner will suit up for the Buccaneers. Zack is a redshirt junior, while Syd is a redshirt freshman. TIGERS RANKED NO. 19 IN PRESEASON POLLS The preseason polls are out, and after a one-year hiatus, Memphis checks back in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Coaches Top 25 polls at No. 19. It s the sixth time in the last seven seasons the Tigers have been ranked in the preseason. The Tigers highest preseason ranking was No. 3 to start the 2007-08 campaign. In its history, Memphis has been ranked a total of 18 times in the preseason polls. The following are the preseason rankings for

Junior forward Wesley Witherspoon was an All-C-USA preseason first team pick, while freshman guard Will Barton was named to the league s preseason second team. Barton was the only freshman in the league to be named to either team. Witherspoon, a 2010 All-Conference USA third team selection, finished the 2009-10 season as the Tigers second-leading scorer at 12.5 ppg and thirdleading rebounder at 4.6 rpg. He shot 46.7 percent from the floor, 43 percent from the arc and 76.4 percent from the free throw line. The 6-foot-9 forward ranked among the Conference USA leaders in scoring, free throw percentage, steals and blocked shots. As a freshman, Witherspoon was named Conference USA s Sixth Man of the Year Barton, a consensus top-15 national recruit, comes to Memphis after playing at Brewster Academy in New Hampshire in 2009-10. In his one season at Brewster, the 6-foot-6 guard averaged 20.8 points in helping lead the Bobcats to a 35-4 overall record and the National Prep Championship crown. Barton was named the MVP of the National Prep Championship tournament and was also selected the New England Preparatory School Athletic Conference (NEPSAC) Class A Player of the Year for 2009-10. WELCOME TO MEMPHIS!...PART I Memphis welcomes one of the nation s top-five recruiting classes to the Bluff City for the 2010-11 campaign. The Tigers class was No. 1 following the early signing period last November. Rivals.com, ESPN.com, Scout.com and The Sporting News all rated the Tigers 2010 class No. 1 in the nation. MaxPreps.com ranked the Tigers class No. 2 and PrepStars.com No. 3. After the late signing period in the spring of 2010, the Tigers class still remained among the top-five in all the national rankings. Antonio Barton, Will Barton, Tarik Black, Chris Crawford, Joe Jackson, Jelan Kendrick and Hippolyte Tsafack all signed with the Tigers in November of 2009. WELCOME TO MEMPHIS!...PART II In addition to the seven signees, the Tigers welcomed another player to the mix when Charles Carmouche announced his intention in early May to transfer to Memphis from the University of New Orleans program. Carmouche, a rising junior with two years of eligibility remaining, can play immediately for the Tigers as a result of New Orleans moving from NCAA Division I to Division III in athletics for the 2010-11 academic year. The Privateers second-leading scorer at 12.6 ppg last year, Carmouche was the squad s leading rebounder at 4.8 rpg from his guard spot. The New Orleans, La., native also led his squad in minutes played (972; 33.5 mpg) and steals (42). He shot 39.7 percent from the field, 35.2 percent from the threepoint line and 61.3 percent from the charity stripe. The 6-foot-3 guard had his better performances against big-name competition in 2009-10. He opened the 2009-10 campaign with 20 points, four rebounds and five assists while playing 36 minutes at Georgia. In 35 minutes in a road contest at N.C. State, Carmouche netted 16 points and pulled down eight boards. He scored a career-high 23 points in a road game at Western Kentucky. PASTNER SEVENTH-YOUNGEST HEAD COACH IN NCAA DIVISION I IN 2010-11 If you ask Josh Pastner about his age, he just says it s a number. And it is. However, Pastner s age makes him one of the youngest head coaches in NCAA Division I in 2010-11.
