BOSTON RED SOX (28-39) at ATLANTA BRAVES (32-34) Thursday, June 18, 2015 7:10 p.m. ET Turner Field, Atlanta, GA RHP Clay Buchholz (3-6, 4.22) vs. RHP Shelby Miller (5-2, 2.02) Game #68 Road Game #34 TV: NESN Radio: WEEI 93.7 FM, WCEC 1490 AM (Spanish) YESTERDAY S NEWS: The Red Sox fell to the Braves, 5-2, in the fi rst of 2 games at Turner Field and the start of a 5-game road trip...both teams scored single runs in the 4th and 6th, but Atlanta tallied 3 more runs in the 7th and 8th. One day after tallying a season-high 9 extra-base hits, the club was held to 1, a solo homer by Mike Napoli in the top of the 6th...It was his fi rst HR since 6/3, snapping a 43-AB homerless drought. Starting pitcher Joe Kelly allowed 2 runs in 5.0+ innings and did not factor in the decision...he allowed the fi rst 2 runners to reach in the 6th, 1 of which scored off the bullpen...junichi Tazawa took the loss, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits in 0.2 IP to begin the 7th. WITH THE STICK: Yesterday s starter Joe Kelly went 1-for- 2 at the plate with an RBI single in the 4th inning that provided the game s fi rst run...he joined Derek Lowe (RBI double in the 2nd inning on 7/4/04 at ATL) as the only Red Sox pitchers in the DH era (since 1973) to provide the team with a go-ahead hit...on the season, Sox pitchers are 3-for- 10 (.300) with 2 RBI. SOX LATELY: Boston is 1-1 in its last 2 games following a season-long 7-game losing streak from 6/9-16...In going 1-8 in the last 9 games, Boston has been outscored 56-39... All but 1 of the 8 losses in that span are by 3 runs, and 3 of those losses came in 1-run games. During this 9-game stretch, the club has hit.268 (85- for-317) with an average of 4.3 R/G, compared to a.248 clip and 3.8 R/G with beforehand...club hurlers has posted an MLB-high 6.15 ERA (54 ER/79.0 IP) in these last 9 games (dating back to 6/9). STATE OF THE SOX: Boston enters its 10th of 14 straight days with a scheduled game (1-8 thus far)...tonight s game is the 2nd in a stretch in which 12 of 15 contests will be on the road (0-1 thus far)...the club has its shortest homestand of the season next week, a 3-gamer against Baltimore beginning Tuesday. With yesterday s loss, Boston fell to 28-39 (.418), falling below Oakland, which improved to 29-39 (.426), to reach the AL cellar...they are a season-hightying 11 games under.500 (also 11 games under at 27-38 after Monday s loss). The Sox are in 5th place for a season-high 9th straight day and are a season-high-tying 9.0 games back (also after Monday s loss), trailing the 1st-place Rays (.552, 37-30). BOOMING JUNE: Boston leads the AL with 154 hits and 32 doubles in the month of June...The Sox are batting.282 (154-for-547) this month, 2nd best in the AL behind TOR (.288)...Boston hit.245 in April and.237 in May. Since the start of June, Dustin Pedroia, Brock Holt, Hanley Ramirez, David Ortiz, Xander Bogaerts, and Pablo Sandoval have combined to bat.326 (105-for- 322) with 20 2B, 2 3B, 9 HR, 41 RBI, and 27 BB for a.378 OBP,.484 SLG, and.862 OPS. Of those 6 players, all are hitting at least.300 during the month aside from Ortiz (.250), who leads the team in June with 3 HR and 10 RBI in June. PAPI THE FIRST BASEMAN: Since 2003, the Red Sox are 45-20 (.692) at NL ballparks when David Ortiz starts at 1B, compared to 21-28 (.429) when he does not. The Sox have won 38 of the last 49 (.776) Interleague games Ortiz started at 1B (beginning 6/24/05), including both in 2015. MULTIPLE MAN: Pablo Sandoval has hit safely in a season-high 8 straight games dating back to 6/10, the longest active hit streak on the team...he is batting.452 (14-for-31) with an MLB-leading 5 doubles, 1 triple, 1 homer, and 6 RBI in those games...his 7 XBH also lead the AL...He has exactly 2 hits in each of his last 5 games (.526, 10-for-19, 4 2B, 3B). AGAINST ATLANTA: The Red Sox and Braves meet today for the last time in their 4-game Interleague series, all coming in 4 straight days...the fi rst 2 games were played in Boston, and the last 2 are here in Atlanta. With a win today, the Sox would avoid their fi rst losing season against the Braves since going 1-2 in 2004...The Sox have taken the season set all 6 times these clubs have met in 10 years since (2005-14). The Sox 61 games against the Braves are their most against any Interleague opponent (PHI next at 56)... Monday night s loss snapped Boston s 6-game win streak against the Braves, the longest win streak for either team in their all-time series. Boston is 17-13 (.567) all-time in road games against the Braves, with all 30 games at Turner Field, the best mark among all visiting teams with at least 13 games played at this ballpark...the Sox have won 6 of their last 8 games here and are 9-3 in Atlanta since 2006. NATIONAL AFFAIRS: The Sox are 5-4 against NL opponents this season, averaging 5.7 runs scored per game in those 8 contests, compared to 3.6 R/G in their 58 other contests this season...20% of Boston s runs this season (51 of 260 runs) have come in their 9 games against the NL. Boston owns MLB s best Interleague record since 2003 at 144-85 (.629)...The Sox have at least a.500 record against NL teams in 11 of the past 12 years with the only exception coming last season (9-11). INTERLEAGUE INTRIGUE: Dustin Pedroia is 11-for-31 (.355) against NL opponents this season and has a.336 career Interleague AVG (196-for-584), just shy of ATL s Nick Markakis (.337, 214-for-635) for the top Interleague AVG among active players (min. 300 PA). ON THE ROAD: The Red Sox have dropped their last 7 road games, scoring just 16 runs in those games...it marks the Sox longest road losing streak since they fell in their last 8 road games of 2012. Boston has 1 win in its last 12 road games dating back to 5/17...The sole win in that time came on 5/28 in TEX...Prior to this stretch, the Sox had taken 5 of 7 road games from 5/10-16. Overall this season, the Sox have averaged an AL-low 3.3 runs scored per game on the road (110 R/33 G) compared to 4.4 R/G at home (150 R/34 G).
