I'm JULIE WEST And I'm HANNAH MACKENZIE Today is August 28th... And UNLEASHED begins... NOW. [A4 - INTRO_NEWS_WHITNEY GEAR] Good morning Wildcats. The fall sports season is now in full swing. Make sure to head down to the student store to pick up your maroon gear. There is plenty of new spirit wear to purchase, including t-shirts, sweatshirts, and a baseball tee. If you have an ASB card, all clothing items are discounted. [A5 - NEWS_PORTRAITS] Seniors, it is time to get your portraits taken for the yearbook. If you have not had your picture taken, you need to be photographed, by Prestige, before September 16th. If you have an appointment scheduled, do not cancel it. They will not be able to get you a new one before the deadline. [A6 - NEWS_YEARBOOK] And... it's also time to purchase your senior tribute for the yearbook. This is a special section for seniors, and the space fills up quickly. Prices increase each month this semester, so now is the best time to order your senior tribute. Forms are available on the WHS homepage and in Room C-2. Your parents can communicate with Whitney High Student Media through email to keep it a surprise, or you can drop the materials off to Mrs. Nichols in room C-2. [A7 - NEWS_NIGHT SCHOOL] Night School registration forms are now available in the counseling office. The deadline to turn in your registration form is September 7th, by 3:00pm. Please see the counseling department if you have
any questions. [A8 - NEWS_PARKING] And... this is a reminder that you must have a permit to park in any lot on campus. If you do not have a permit displayed, you will be cited by the Rocklin Police department. This is your only warning about parking. Remember, if you have a permit to park in the back lot, you must be parked past the rolling gates. [A9 - NEWS_CLUB SIGN UP] If you are planning to start a club, applications are available tomorrow, in the student store. Come to any window before school, during break, at lunch, or after school to pick one up. Applications are due by September 13th to the student store, by the end of the day. [A10 - NEWS_ADD DROP AP] And... the deadline to add or drop most classes has passed. But, there are still a few days left to add or drop an AP or honors course. The deadline to change out of an advanced level course is September 5th. Add Drop forms are in the counselor's' office. If you have any questions you can make an appointment with your counselor. [A11 - NEWS_FBLA] The Whitney High School FBLA Chapter is having their first meeting on Wednesday, September 5th, at the start of lunch, in room J-6. At the meeting, you will learn about what the Future Business Leaders of America organization has to offer, and sign up for leadership conferences and competitions. If you have any questions see Mrs. Gonzalez in room J-6. Again, the FBLA meeting is September 5th, at lunch. [A12 - NEWS_LIBRARY] And... the library staff would like to remind you that they are open from 7:15 am to 3:30pm. The library is a quiet place for reading, studying, or collaborating with other students. Chromebooks can be checked out for library use only, with a school ID. You can also use the printers. Also with your student ID, you can check out up to two library books at a time, for three weeks. Renew online to avoid fines. Textbook check outs are for the year and must be returned before last day of school. [A13 - XFACTOR_X-FACTOR APP] In X-Factor news, all students are invited to come out to the first home football game on Friday. This is an X-Factor event so points are doubled for checking in on the X-Factor app. Make sure to check in at the back gate of the stadium, after 6:30 pm. Remember, the games are free with an ASB card. [A14 - XFACTOR_MARCHING BAND] And... The Marching Band is practicing for Friday's X-Factor game. When you check in on the app for Friday's game, you can enjoy live music performed by the Marching Band. This year's show is called "ABOVE THE STARS," and features songs from Star Trek and
Apollo 13. Remember, kick-off for the X-Factor game is at 7:00 and the band performs at halftime. [A15 - INTRO TO THE WORD] Now... many of the groups worked together over summer. The football team conditioned in the heat and so did the cross country teams.... Here's EMILY GASTON with more in your... "Word around Campus." In this photo, Katelynne is with senior Mikayla Barkve after their 10 mile run for cross country practice. The team practiced since July and this was their longest run so far. Come out and support the Cross country teams as they are hosting their own meet on Saturday, at Sierra College. AND THIS WEEK WE ASKED YOU to tell us your favorite memory from the summer USING THE HASHTAG WHSUNLEASHED. Junior Eve Zguleva said her most memorable moment of summer was going to Bolivia, South America. She helped with community outreach, build schools, and she played with local children. In this picture, Eve is with Yandy, a little girl who attends one of the schools. When leaving, Yandy said that Eve was her best friend and will always remember her even though she is in a different country. NOW, we went on twitter to find out WHAT'S TRENDING... and this home run is something one 10 year old boy will never forget. Anthony Slocumb has a rare form of cancer that affects his immune system. He recently traveled with the make-a-wish Foundation to visit the Oakland A's and outfielder Khris Davis. Instead of Davis giving Anthony an autograph, he asked Anthony if he would sign his jersey. Then, during the game, Davis hit his 37th home run of the season. [A17 - OUT WORD_BE RIGHT BACK]...Davis wore the signed jersey because he wanted Anthony to know he was thinking about him. Now, here are some volunteer opportunities you can find in the College and Career Center... The City of Rocklin is hosting it's 8th annual Patriot Day event on September 9th. City organizers need several volunteers to help with set up and clean up. [B2 - CAREER_ROCKLIN LIBRARY]
The Rocklin Public Library is looking to start a teen advisory group and they need your help. You need to be between the ages of 14 through 17 and willing to commit to at least six months of volunteering. [B3 - CAREER_SIERRA ELEMENTARY] And... there is an opportunity to earn community service hours and help elementary school students. If you like hiking and camping, and you like working with young students, sign up to help. Sierra Elementary is looking for camp chaperones to go to Walker Creek Ranch from October 1 through 5th. You need to be a current junior or senior and at least 16 years old. [B4 - CAREER_TRACK] Rocklin Test Prep is offering SAT/ACT Workshops starting on September 10th. Spots fill up quickly. Flyers are available in the career center if you are interested in registering. [B5 - CAREER_FINANCIAL AID NIGHT] And... With college application season coming up, the Interact Club is hosting a financial aid night to give you some tips on how to apply for scholarship money. This is a free workshop for sophomores, juniors, and seniors that provides helpful tips and teach you how to fill out a FAFSA form. The event is on Thursday, from 7 to 8:15 pm in the theater.
