Prior to that, BSU had not won 20 games in consecutive seasons since the 1991-92 and 1992-93 campaigns. Ball State reached the semifinals of the MAC Tournament last year for the first time since 2011, falling 74-70 to MAC regular season champion Akron. The Cardinals lost two games last year to the league s top team by a combined six points, also falling by two on the road against the Zips. Now entering its fifth year under head coach James Whitford, Ball State returns 70 percent of its scoring from last season, led by All-MAC Second Team point guard Tayler Persons. Last season, Persons became the first Ball State player to record more than 500 points (526, 15.5 ppg) and 150 assists (167, 4.9 apg) in a season. He led the team in both categories. The Cardinals also return junior center Trey Moses, who was a MAC All-Defensive Team selection last year. Moses led the league in blocks during conference play with 1.4 per game. For the full season, he was the only player in the MAC to rank in the top five in the league in rebounding (8.3), blocks per game (1.1) and field goal percentage (.561). Ball State s biggest challenge likely will come in replacing power forward Franko House, an all-conference selection in each of the past two seasons. House played in more games than any player in BSU history. He ranks 11th on the Cardinals career scoring list (1,371) and seventh in rebounding (741). Redshirt sophomore Tahjai Teague likely will play the largest role in filling House s spot in the lineup. The versatile Teague averaged 7.3 points and 5.8 rebounds last year in his first season of competition while ranking second on the team in both blocks and steals. The Cardinals return two of the top five 3-point shooters in school history in terms of 3 s made. Senior guard Francis Kiapway ranks fourth in school history with 183 made 3-pointers, while classmate Sean Sellers is fifth on that list with 172. The Cardinals set a school record with 319 made 3-pointers last year, and the team has surpassed the 300 mark in each of the past two seasons. Persons and Jeremie Tyler also return as proven 3-point shooters, while the Cardinals welcome the addition of transfer Jontrell Walker and freshman Ishmael El-Amin to the back court. Walker led the nation in free throw shooting two years ago at Incarnate Word. El-Amin is the son of former Connecticut point guard Khalid El-Amin. Ball State s freshman class also includes wing Zach Gunn, while the Cardinals added a pair of SEC transfers who will be returning to their home state guard K.J. Walton from Missouri and forward Brachen Hazen from Arkansas. All three of those players were Indiana All-Stars as high school seniors, bringing the total of former Indiana All-Stars on the Ball State roster to eight. The Indiana All- Stars each season feature the top 13 high school players in the state. BSU s eight All-Stars matches is the most on any college s roster since Purdue had eight during the 1998-99 season. COACHING STAFF WHITFORD COACHING STAFF ATHLETICS STAFF

HEAD COACH JAMES WHITFORD CAREER COACHING HIGHLIGHTS Alma Mater: Wisconsin 94 James Whitford completed his fourth season as the Ball State men s basketball head coach in 2016-17, continuing to lead a resurgence in the Cardinals program. Whitford s teams have surpassed 20 wins and shared the Mid-American Conference West Division championship in each of the past two seasons. The program had not achieved the first of those feats in consecutive seasons since the early 1990s and had not accomplished the second in back-to-back years in the league s divisional history (since 1998). Ball State has also played in the postseason in each of the past two seasons with trips to the CIT, including a quarterfinal appearance at the end of the 2015-16 campaign Whitford s 2016-17 squad went 21-13 (11-7 MAC), tying for the seventh-most wins in program history for the second year in a row. BSU ranked among the top 15 percent of teams in the country in scoring offense at 78.7 points per game. It was the program s highest per-game scoring output in the past 40 years. The Cardinals reached the semifinals of the MAC Tournament for the first time since 2011 before falling to No. 1 seed Akron by just four points. 04 BALL STATE MBB MEDIA GUIDE 2016-17 05

HEAD COACH The 2015-16 team went 21-14 (10-8 MAC) on the strength of the league s No. 1 scoring defense (66.8). The Cardinals shared the MAC West title after being picked last in the preseason poll. Coming on the heels of a seven-win campaign in 2014-15, Ball State s turnaround ranked as the fourth-largest of any team in the nation. The CIT berth marked the program s first postseason appearance in 14 years. Whitford came incredibly close to winning MAC Coach of the Year honors for the 2014-15 season, finishing second to Akron s Keith Dambrot. He tied Dambrot with 14 first-place votes but ended up one point behind the Akron coach in total points (111-110). Whitford has ushered in an era of 3-point shooting in Muncie. Three of the top four outputs in from beyond the arc in program history have come during his tenure: 234 in 2014-15, 305 in 2015-16, and a school-record 319 in 2016-17. The Cardinals have also been one of the MAC s most unselfish teams under his guidance, leading the league in assists during conference play in 2015-16 (14.7) and ranking second in that category in 2016-17 (15.1). Whitford laid the foundation for the future at Ball State during his first two years, installing his system and ramping up the Cardinals recruiting efforts. His first two Ball State teams were heavy on youth, with the 2014-15 squad ranking among the 25 youngest in the country. Both teams featured the Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year, including Sean Sellers in 2014-15. Whitford signed a 2014 freshman class that included three state champions, a prep school national runner up and, for the first time at Ball State since 1996, two Indiana All-Stars. Scout. com recruiting analyst Brian Snow said of the group, Ball State s 2014 recruiting class is one of the best mid-major recruiting classes in the country. The future is bright in Muncie. Whitford has now recruited eight former Indiana All-Stars to Ball State -- Sellers, Jeremie Tyler, Tahjai Teague, Tayler Persons, Kyle Mallers, Zach Gunn, K.J. Walton and Brachen Hazen. All eight will be on the roster in 2017-18. Prior to Whitford s tenure, Ball State had never had more than four Indiana All-Stars on a single roster. In the decade prior to his arrival in Muncie, the Cardinals signed a total of three. Whitford was introduced as the 19th men s basketball coach in Ball State history on April 10, 2013. In his career as an assistant coach at Arizona, Xavier and Miami University, his teams posted an overall record of 400-208, reached the NCAA tournament nine times and played in the postseason 12 times. We are thrilled to add James Whitford to the Ball State family as our new men s basketball head coach, former Ball State director of intercollegiate athletics Bill Scholl said upon Whitford s hiring. In a very talented pool of candidates, James separated himself from the pack based on the success he has experienced at multiple institutions and the vision he has for Ball State basketball. Whitford served four years on the staff at Arizona, including his final two as the associate head coach. He was with Arizona head coach Sean Miller for eight seasons, dating back to Miller s days guiding the Xavier program. Whitford also brought more than a decade of experience with the MAC, having served on the staff at Miami University under Herb Sendek and Charlie Coles for 11 seasons before joining Miller at Xavier. In my mind, Ball State offers the best combination of academic excellence, basketball tradition, outstanding arena and fan support of any school in the Mid-American Conference, Whitford said at his introductory press conference. When you add the unparalleled recruiting base in the state of Indiana and the great teaching those high school players receive from their various coaches, this job became one I targeted. Whitford helped Arizona to an average of 27 wins per season over his final three years in Tucson, including a 30-win campaign in 2010-11 that featured a Pac- 10 Conference championship and an appearance in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats concluded the 2012-13 season with a mark of 27-8 (12-6 Pac-12) and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16. Whitford served as recruiting coordinator at Arizona and helped the program consistently land nationally ranked signing classes. The Wildcats 2012 class was rated as high as third in the country. Whitford was in charge of developing Arizona s post players, one of whom, Derrick Williams, became the No. 2 overall selection in the 2011 NBA Draft. He also led the defensive coordination for a Wildcats team that allowed fewer than 64 points per game in each of his final two seasons. The 2012-13 Arizona team outscored its opponents by nearly 10 points per game. James is a tireless worker and a relentless recruiter who has helped Miami, Xavier and Arizona all experience tremendous success within their respective conferences and the NCAA Tournament, Scholl said. He prides himself in developing young men on and off the basketball court and has an infectious positive energy that will be great for our program. Before heading West, Whitford helped the Xavier program to an impressive run during his four years in Cincinnati. The Musketeers posted an overall record of 103-35, won three Atlantic 10 Conference championships and played in the NCAA Tournament all four years. The 2007-08 Xavier team reached the Elite Eight. Since opening its doors in 1992, John E. Worthen Arena has proven to be one of the premier athletic venues in the Mid- American Conference. The arena seats 11,500 fans and was built at a cost of $29.4 million. Worthen Arena made its official debut Jan. 15, 1992 when the Ball State men s and women s basketball teams hosted Miami University in a doubleheader. The men s game drew a sellout crowd of 11,500 fans that went home happy after seeing the Cardinals post a 70-64 victory. The opening game was the first of two sellouts in 1992 and the first of eight to date in the arena s history. Since moving into the arena, the Cardinals have had 25 games with more than 8,000 fans. Ball State owns an all-time record of 248-113 (.687) in 24 seasons inside the facility. The arena underwent a series of upgrades in the summer of 2015, highlighted by a center-hung Daktronics video board. The custom-designed LED board features six panels, one on each of the four sides and two angled at the bottom for those sitting in the lower sections. The summer renovations also included new corner scoreboards with individual player stat panels and an entirely new floor. 18 BALL STATE MBB MEDIA GUIDE 2016-17 19

The Cardinals fell to eventual national champion UNLV (69-67) at the West Regional semifinals in Oakland, Calif. Ball State was ranked 22nd in the final 1990 USA Today/CNN Poll, which is the Cardinals highest ranking to end a season in school history. GREAT MOMENTS Morry Mannies retired as Ball State s play-by-play announcer in 2012 after 56 years calling games for the Cardinals. A banner for Mannies with the number 56 now hangs in the Worthen Arena rafters. 2001 MAUI INVITATIONAL Ball State experienced a great 48 hours of college basketball in November of 2001 when, on back-to-back days, the Cardinals defeated No. 3 Kansas (93-91) and No. 4 UCLA (91-73). Those wins marked the highest ranked teams a Ball State team has ever defeated and vaulted the Cardinals into the title game against No. 1 Duke. The Blue Devils posted an 83-71 win. Ball State was ranked for four straight weeks in the top-25 of the AP and ESPN/ USA Today Poll. The Cardinals were ranked 15th in the Dec. 3 AP Poll, marking the highest ranking in school history. 24 BALL STATE MBB MEDIA GUIDE 2016-17 2002 POSTSEASON NIT Ball State reached the Final Eight of the 2002 National Invitation Tournament. Ball State then rolled to a 76-54 road win over St. Joseph s in the second round behind a 28-point performance from Patrick Jackson. Four days later, Williams scored 25 to lead the Cardinals to a 76-65 win at LSU. Ball State s run eventually ended with a loss at South Carolina as the Cardinals came up one game short of the NIT semifinals and a trip to Madison Square Garden. 25
