CLAY COUNTY, SD 4-H GUIDELINES JUNE 2018 A NOTE FROM LAUREN I hope you all are ready for a fun summer of 4-H activities! Please read your fair supplement and newsletters carefully so you don t miss anything! This year we are having only one CDM and Horticulture Judging event. It will be July 11 from 4:00-6:00 pm. Fashion Revue will be July 17. There are several categories within Fashion Revue that has options for everyone, whether you like to sew your own clothes or buy an outfit. If you d like to learn more about Fashion Revue and buying an outfit in a fun setting, register for the $20 Fashion Challenge Workshop on June 26. There are also several opportunities in surrounding counties to participate in Special Foods or judging events. Remember that we will be doing County Fair registrations on Fair Entry again and the program will open July 1 and close July 21. Everyone will register projects themselves online. This is different from the 4-H Online process we just did for livestock. Now you will choose those projects that will be exhibited at the fair. If you need help with the Fair Entry process, please don t hesitate to ask. YQCA TRAINING FOR YOUTH SWINE EXHIBITORS The training session for Clay County members will be Wednesday, June 13, 6 pm at the 4-H Center. This year all members attending MUST pre-register online - there is a flyer included with this newsletter explaining this procedure. New this year is a $3.00 fee per youth but at the April 4-H Leaders meeting it was approved to order and pay for vouchers to cover the fee. So, before you register online, you need to call or email the office to get a voucher number and enter this number instead of your credit card number in the payment section. You can find step by step instructions on our website. Look for YQCA Instructor Led Certification. In 2019, ALL youth livestock exhibitors will be required to attend trainings. CONGRATULATIONS EMILY ROLFES! Emily Rolfes entered the 4-H Tech Changemaker Contest early this spring and just received word that she is one of the Top Ten finalists!! Let s all help Emily by voting for her at https://4-h.org/get-involved/supporters/ microsoft-tech-changemakers/. You can vote once a day through June 4. Teens across the country are combining their skills with the power of technology to bring people together, solve problems, and create economic opportunity in their communities. We call these tech-savvy and communityoriented young people Tech Changemakers. The 4 H Tech Changemaker Contest is sponsored by Microsoft as part of National 4 H Council and Microsoft s combined efforts to equip young people with the digital skills and resources they need to make a positive impact in their communities. 4 H CAMP POINSETT We have two girls and six boys registered for Camp Poinsett June 4-6 in Arlington, SD. THANK YOU to Jon Danielson for stepping up as the male chaperone. Our boys will now be able to attend camp. Lauren sent each family an email on May 29 with important camp information so be sure to read the email. PREPARING & EXHIBITING VEGETABLES Just a reminder that the guide was updated last year and is on our website. If you would like it emailed to you, contact Colleen at the office. You will need the variety name of your plant on the entry form so keep the seed packet or make a note of it.

2018 COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT Just a reminder - if you make fleece-tied blankets for the state-wide community service project, please let the office know the organization and the number of blankets donated. We need to submit a county report in September to the State Office. Wal-Mart is reducing their fleece to $2.50 to $4.00/yard. If you haven t made blankets yet or want to make more, stop out and get the fabric at reduced prices before it s all gone! CLAY COUNTY PRINCESS CONTEST It s time to enter the Clay County Princess and Junior Princess Pageant. Princess (11-13 yrs) and Junior Princess (7-10 yrs) are limited to 15 contestants together. The $20 entry fee includes opening number t-shirt, gift bag and participation trophy. The 2018 Princess and Junior Princess will receive a tiara, sash, flowers and trophy. Runner-ups receive trophies. Participants must be a Clay County 4-H member or Clay County resident and be able to attend fair all 3 days. The entry packet is on our website, can be emailed to you or you can find it on our bulletin board in the office entry. The 2018 State Fair 4-H Division Book can be found on our website or it can be emailed to you. We will not be making copies to save on paper and ink costs. Be sure to read the page included with this newsletter on 2018 changes. FAIRGROUND FLOWER POTS If any club would like to provide and plant flowers in the large fairground flower pots, please stop by and get the key to the east barn and choose the pots you want. Sorry, office staff will not be pulling them out for you. PHOTOGRAPHY BOARD We have the photography foam board in the office for all your photography exhibits. Cost is $1.00/board. Please bring a check payable to Clay County 4-H Leaders Assoc. or cash in the correct amount. In an effort to highlight the AMAZING work our youth are doing across the state, each month there will be a member feature on igrow - similar to the 4-H Youth Program Advisor and Youth Council features (essentially a Q&A). In order to truly be highlighting youth from across the state, counties should nominate 4-H members that go above and beyond in their project areas. Think of the kids who have taken a project area far beyond what you could have imagined. This member should be more about the quality of their project(s), not the quantity. If there is more than one youth that fits the bill, we can submit multiple forms, but there will only be one feature per month. Use the Member Feature Form included with this newsletter and return to the office; we will submit it to the state. Save the form so you can submit monthly, if you wish. As always, let us know if you have any questions!
