PBA Piranhas Newsletter December 2013 Presidents Report We have received our first delivery of training equipment acquired with our Department of Recreation and Sport Grant. We now own 4 bungee straps, and the rest of the equipment should be received shortly along with the new training singlets. Thank you to Lili for organising those.the request has been made to Department of Recreation for an extension of time to 31st May 2014 for the coach training and development portion of our grant of $1000. I am hoping for a favourable response which would enable these funds to assist meet the cost of Tristen completing his Bronze coaching level and gym instructors course in the new year. The club brochure has been updated with new committee members and has been printed using some of the club promotion grant monies. These brochures will be available from the Swim School desk. Karen and I attended the AGM of the West Beach & Districts Community Bank recently, where we were presented with a framed certificate as part of the Community Sponsorship Program. We have received a further $1000 which takes our total sponsorship from the Community Bank to $2490. This further $1000 will be used towards the 2nd Bendigo Bank stroke clinic.the first clinic was held in Oct school holidays 2012. The Community Bank gives back to those that support it. The club currently operates all 3 bank accounts with the Bank. If any members are in a position where they are looking for alternative banking arrangements please consider the West Beach & Districts Community Bank and let them know you are a member of PBA Piranhas. Congratulations to all the swimmers that represented PBA at the recent Marion Swimming Carnival. I did however have trouble picking some of our swimmers in the water as they were not wearing club caps. I refer everyone to the Uniform Policy, which will need to be updated to include the new polo shirts and then distributed to all members, that quotes PBA has a team uniform and swimmers are expected to wear the appropriate uniform which includes navy PBA swimming cap (named and unnamed) at all times when representing the club. Let s be proud to be part of PBA and make us easy to recognise on pool deck by wearing the club cap. I have discussed with Lili and she will take a small supply of caps, which will be available for purchase, to all swim meets she attends. Thank you to Tiffany Milsom for offering to take over the newsletter. This is an important role as it provides us with an easy way to get updated information out to all our members without generating multiple emails. The new squad structure has commenced. The majority of booking sheets were returned as required which made booking lane hire easy. A number of members have used the email as requested to update the coaches as to swimmers absences and this appears to be working well. We have also cancelled our lane hire arrangement at SAALC. When Thurs am training recommences, expected mid Jan 2104 training will return to Immanuel. We welcome to our coaching staff Kieran and Levi Proude who will cover coaching duties for December whilst Tristan is on leave. Kieran is currently employed by the swim school and is a bronze level coach. Levi has just finished year 12 at Immanuel College and passed his bronze level theory in Oct, he now requires his coaching hours to get his bronze level coaching certificate. The club is actively seeking to increase club membership and we have recently had a number of requests from surf club swimmers re training with our squads. Most of these swimmers do not wish to compete in the pool so are put off by the requirement to join the club/swim SA and swim Australia and the yearly membership fee currently $190.50. We are unable to get around this as a swimmer needs to be registered with Swim SA to ensure they have insurance cover otherwise the club is liable if anything happens when they are involved in club activities. We are however able to offer up to 4 weeks trial for potential members before these fees need to be paid. We have currently offered this to two swimmers who started training with the squad last week. By offering the trial it gives the swimmers a chance to ensure they are happy with what we can offer and ensure they are committed enough to continue. Hopefully, it will help make the decision to join the club easier. Julie Goldner Nominations - All closing times are 9.00am on the nominated day Please note that with the upgrade of the system method of entry, dates may change. I love seeing family in North Carolina (where I was born) but I also like going to other really cool states in America because it s so different there. The highlight though, would have to be going to a swim camp, where I get to focus on my stroke technique and meet other swimmers from the other side of the globe.
