P a g e 6 D u n c a n G o l f & T e n n i s C l u b Hard vs Fast (irons) T i p s F r o m t h e P r o s EVERYONE wants more distance and I see most players trying to hit the ball longer by swinging harder...and they are all scared of me when I tell them to swing FASTER. By my definition, harder means trying to create speed with the body and faster means creating speed with the club head. There are many factors that come into making the golf ball go longer and none are more important than BALL SPEED. Yes I said ball speed not centeredness of contact although they are highly intertwined. If you hit the ball more solid, it will come off the clubface faster but a mishit at 100 mph will go longer than a solid strike at 90 mph. 1 mph of ball speed can increase distance by 2 yards! How can you increase ball speed???? Depending on the players swing speed, lower loft means more distance. At some point in everyone's swing lower loft will not mean more distance. For the sake of this article, talking about irons, we are going to say lower loft means more distance. Most players return the club with the same amount of loft from set up to impact. Better players will decrease the loft and higher handicap players will actually add loft to the club at impact. For you to increase your ball speed, we need to have the shaft leaning forward delofting the club at impact. This lower loft presented to the ball will increase the ball speed resulting in more distance. A couple of things to watch for...as the shaft leans forward. As the shaft leans forward, the club has a tendency to open so you will need to feel like the club is a bit more closed than previously. If you divots become too deep, make sure your getting to a full finish and your body is rotating through the ball. If you need help with your game or have questions, feel free to call us or stop by the pro shop.
