Southview Scene C O U N T R Y C L U B From the Director of Golf by Phil Anderson The month of May provided us with some great days of golf and a great Memorial day weekend! We now look forward to a great summer of golf! Burgers, Blue Jeans and Brews Our event, Burgers, Blue Jeans and Brews was a great success. Members were able to come join us Saturday, May 17th for a night of food and solid entertainment. Who knew how talented our membership is at karaoke! We experienced a wide variety of performances with music from across the decades and even saw some of our management team show off their musical abilities. Thanks for all who came out and participated! Memorial Day Weekend The weather could not have been any better for Memorial Day weekend. While the forecast predicted possible showers we managed to stay dry and enjoy some great rounds of golf here at Southview. I hope you all were able to spend time out doors and enjoyed a relaxing weekend! Hole in One Policy Here at Southview we hope to always support success out on the golf course! We are therefore updating the hole in one policy. All adult golf members are now automatically insured for a hole in one. When a hole in one is made all members will be billed $4. If a member is to make a hole in one at Southview with a witness, a bar tab will be opened for the remainder of the day and all golf members at the club will be invited to enjoy a complimentary drink of their choice. The member who made the hole in one will receive a plaque commemorating the special shot. The balance between the billing and the bar tab will be donated to the golf course beautification fund. If you would like to opt out of the billing for this change, please e-mail the golf shop. Best of luck and I look forward to seeing who gets the first ace! Welcome New Golf Members! Brooks & Natalie Bollinger Eagan, MN David & Joan Heying Apple Valley, MN Ron and Shona Hagen Eric Sander Paul Archambeau Darcy Pemble & Dallas Apfelbacher Mendota Heights, MN Bill & Jennifer Alexander Travis Nolt Minneapolis, MN Cody Nolt Minneapolis, MN VOL. 26, No. 3, June 2014 Food & Beverage By Kaitlin Delaney & Julie L to R - Kaitlin Delaney & Julie Reick With the nice weather FINALLY here, we are in full swing in both the restaurants and on the deck. And with the warm weather, we have had lots of golfers in the Wedgewood and great turnouts for Happy Hour on Friday. We are also looking forward to Saturday nights for! The kickoff will begin Saturday, June 21st. Do you have an anniversary, birthday or a special client you would like to entertain? Please remember to take advantage of the Main Bar for your fine dining needs. And with the warm, sunny days and pleasant evenings, make sure to utilize the deck and its glorious view of the course. We have lots of weddings and special events upcoming in our banquet department. If you have a wedding, shower, reunion, or meeting, please contact De Anna in Catering so we can make your special event "extra special" by holding it at Southview.

From the Catering Office by De Anna Paulette Burgers, Blue Jeans and Brews Night 2 Food & Fun Summer Events Thank you to everyone who came out and participated in our 1st ever Burgers, Blue Jeans and Brews event! We were thrilled to have over 100 members and guests come for the cookout, and also dazzle us with their vocal renditions of both old school classics and modern songs! It was a fun night, and definitely one which we will repeat in the future. The Food & Fun Committee met last week on May 27th, and talked through ideas for our next event which will be held before the summer season comes to a close. We encourage all members and guests to come out and support these family-friendly themed events aimed at creating memorable experiences outside of everyday dining and golf activities. I hope you all are having a wonderful start to Summer!

From the Grounds by Jeramie Gossman It is nice to see that spring is finally here to stay after a late and cool start to the season. This nicer weather has allowed for some excellent golf days. The golf course has been very busy, the trees are leafing out and turf is filling in quickly. We would like to update you on the status of the projects that were mentioned in May s SCC scene. We have now opened the forward tee on hole #1 for play. The boards on the bunker edges have been removed and these sod areas have been marked with green and white stakes to help keep equipment off of them. Our new and repaired cart paths have had the edges prepped with soil and have recently been sodded. The stump holes and the large area behind #2 green have been sodded. Many thin turf areas have been hydro-seeded. To help enable us to grow these repaired areas into healthy turf, please refrain from entering any area on foot or on cart that have been marked with any rope, sign or stake. In the past, the visibility of the portable restroom area between holes 14 and 18 has been a common topic. We recently planted twenty trees in this area to help improve the view from all holes and neighboring properties, and to provide some privacy. Once these trees begin to mature we will not be able to see the portable restrooms from many areas. Before After There have been many questions pertaining to the seed/sand bottles that are located on the golf carts. The mix provided is meant to be used on our fairways only. Due to the expense of the dyed- green sand, we ask that you leave the filling of divots on the tees to our grounds crew. Also, under no circumstance is this seed mix to be used in the rough. These bottles contain a different type of turf seed that is not to be grown in rough areas. The proper way to repair a divot is to first replace the divot whenever possible to create the best playable lie. Continued on Page 5 3 Any replaced divot, and even a dead divot, will always provide a better hitting surface than a divot opening that has been filled with sand or one that has been left unattended. This holds true with any divot whether hit from the tee, fairway or rough. Golf etiquette states that divots must be tended to. The sand bottles we provide are only meant to be used if the divot is unable to be replaced. Below is a picture of a divot that should be replaced. Here is a second picture of a divot that should be filled with sand. Any divot that is being replaced should be placed firmly into the opening that it came from. After placing the divot in the hole, stomp on the divot to flatten it out and to compact the soil to make solid turf contact.

4 From the President by Will Steinke With the golf season finally underway I would ask for your cooperation on doing everything possible to protect and maintain the most important asset we have: the golf course. I have noticed some troubling things in the times I have been out on the course this year. Here is a partial list: Unrepaired ball marks on the greens: Please fix your ball marks! I estimate I fix 4 ball marks every time I have been on a green this year. Sand traps: Please be courteous toward your fellow members and rake the sand trap after you hit your shot Cart Traffic: Please obey the area either marked for carts to avoid or areas obviously not for cart traffic. These areas are marked for a reason, to protect the golf course. Divots: Please replace your divots on the tee, fairway or in the rough. In the fairway, if the divot cannot be replaced, use the bottle on the golf cart to fill the divot. **These bottles can only be used on fairway divots We have worked hard to improve the financial condition of our club, lets all chip in to care for our golf course by doing the small things necessary to protect this asset. YTD Financial Results thru April of 2014: For the month of April, our budget is a net profit of $115,000 with our actual results a net profit of $112,000. Although we always strive to exceed our budget, this shortfall of $3,000 was relatively minor and we will be able overcome it. When comparing our April net profit of $112,000 to April of 2013 s net profit of $85,000, there is an improvement of $27,000 which is something we are proud of. It should be noted in April of 2012 we had a net loss of ($93,000) so the last two years have seen dramatic improvements to our financials. Based on the results so far in 2014, we are in a strong position to improve on our financial success in 2013 as 2014 looks to be an even better year. I do promise we will continue to operate with fiscal discipline to protect the asset we all enjoy together. Southview is continuing on a path to success and is going to thrive and prosper, thanks for being a part of it. I am confident you will continue to enjoy it! Do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, comments or concerns. Will on the Deck! Saturday Nights Begins June 21st! Please Call for Reservations! Family Day Golf! Call the Office for Reservations Continued from Pg. 3 This process will give the roots of the turf a chance to re-root into the soil and grow again, thus providing a much quicker recovery time than re-growing turf from seed. Seed mix placed into small divot openings will fill-in from newly germinated seeds and from the surrounding turf in a timely manner. The sand in this mix helps to keep a ball from settling low, providing an unfavorable lie. The problem with relying on sand/seed mixture to recuperate a divot opening is that heavy rain will wash the mix out of the openings. Also, when we blow clippings off of our fairways after mowing the sand and seed also blows off. Family Day is Sunday, June 15 th with an 8AM shotgun. Please join us on Father s Day for a fun morning of golf with a barbeque buffet to follow. The cost is $35 Thank you for you cooperation in per player and is limited to the first 120 Men's Spring Stag Event players!
