STRATHCONA COUNTY PICKLEBALL ASSOCIATION NEWS SCPA Newsletter July 2017 President s Message, from the desk of Doug Flowers Well, July has been a really busy month with the opening of the Sherwood Heights new 8 pickleball court facility by Strathcona County. We have moved our whole program over to the new courts. They sure look good and only had minor fix-ups. We kicked off the new courts with the Canada Day Mixer and Pot Luck at Al and Bev Lang s. Dave Speer and his coordinators have kicked off the wildly popular round robins which have been full to overflowing. We had great weather for the Court Grand Opening on July 26 that was well attended. So it was a great day. The Ice Cream sales were sure a hit. We had eight 4.5 and 5.0 players from Cold Lake, Cochrane, Camrose and Spruce Grove playing a round robin with Dennis for the demo games. The Mayor and MLA gave speeches as well as Mike Cooper from Pickleball Alberta. The day finished with a mixer but some of us were just baked by the end of the day. Next to look forward to is our In-House tournament August 26/27. Remember to keep it Fun, Fair and Friendly. July 26 Sherwood Heights Courts Grand Opening It was a warm and sunny day. July 26 began with players from different parts of Alberta; from as far away as Cold Lake, Cochrane and Camrose, as well as Spruce Grove and Edmonton. They were level 4.5 and 5.0 that Dennis Tomkinson organized for the demonstration games. All the players seemed to really enjoy the new courts. It was most surely entertaining to watch them play. Some of them stayed and played in the mixer later on. Simultaneously, Wayne Larson, lead instructor and his team coached new people on how to play the sport. Doug Flowers acted as the Emcee and made the opening remarks. In attendance were: M.L.A. s Annie McKitrick (club member), Estefania Cortes-Vargas, Mayor Roxanne Carr, Counsellors Vic Bidzinski and Linton Delainey, as well as Russ Pawlyk, Director Recreation, Parks and Culture and the Community Partnership Team. Mayor Carr and Annie McKitrick made speeches. Dennis Tomkinson introduced the eight high level players, including Mike Cooper who represented Pickleball Alberta and who also made a speech. After the formalities, all present were directed to the ice cream sundae station where Bev Lang and her team were selling this treat with many donated toppings, enjoyed by many, including family members and grandchildren. The day finished off nicely with a mixer of all available players until the heat of the day got to them. All told about 150 people were in attendance. The event included our first sponsor, Christenson Development who provided an info tent and gave away bottled water.
