32 ND NUSS GOLF ANNUAL CHARITY (JULY) Article by Chang Shern Hin Friday 13 th July 2018 was the date many NUSS golf section members had been waiting for with some nervous anxiety. Given the ominous date and the frequency of inclement weather lately many must have kept their fingers crossed that the 32nd Golf Annual Charity Tournament would proceed without a hitch. This was in part due to the addition of the element of the charitable cause towards the endowed student support fund, in honour of Professor Tan Chorh Chuan, raising funds for financially challenged NUS students. The competitors were met with glorious sunny weather, we suspect, due to the presence of the Chili Bawang to ward off inclement weather. Kudos to the organising committee for having the foresight to stave off bad weather! The course was in perfect condition giving the opportunity for many of the golfers to enjoy playing for their first time on a challenging and scenically beautiful course converted out of recognition from the previous layout. It was truly playing on a new course given Singapore s increasing scarcity of golf courses. Contributing to the merriment and relaxed atmosphere on the course was the copious amounts of beer served at the cross-over. Simply ideal for quenching thirst and giving a player a relaxed confidence to take on the course. Not that it necessarily improved the score, mind you, but we played the game in cheerful camaraderie. With the packet of beer in one hand and an Old Chang Kee curry puff in the other it was a highly satisfying outing for our golfers! Page 3 of 6
32 ND NUSS GOLF ANNUAL CHARITY (CONT D) The apres golf dinner was held at the Della & Seng Gee Hall, NUSS Kent Ridge Guild House where the happy golfers were plied with excellent food and more alcohol. The band, Rebana was in attendance and everybody went home with a memento of the wonderful day and of the worthy cause for which the event was organised. To the credit of all who participated in this event, a sum of $513,500 was raised towards the Needy Students Fund of the NUSS. Truly commendable! All in all a day of great memories and camaraderie for all, including this hacker! NATIONAL DAY GOLF TOURNAMENT (AUGUST) Article by Chong Kim Seng 62 golfers, decked out in red & white national colours, gathered for the Annual National Day Golf outing on Friday 17 August 2018 held at the SICC Bukit Course. ESM Goh Chok Tong was the Guest-of-Honour. The outing started with a delicious lunch. All had a great time catching up with friends & associates and getting into the right frame of mind for the follow on competitive yet friendly golf challenge. The challenge began with flights after flights teeing off in regulation from the 1st Tee and 10th Tee. The sky was cloudy with a slight breeze. A wonderfully shady day ahead was expected. Unfortunately half way through the game, the siren sounded for closure of the course and play was suspended due to lightning warning. All were so glad that the course was able to reopen an hour later for resumption of play. Dinner commenced with the singing of the National Anthem. Sumptuous buffet dinner followed with free flows of beer & wine. Evergreen music provided by the Silverstones Band delighted all. The sing-alongs of Count On Me Singapore, Stand Up for Singapore & Home were electrifying as it reverberated through the entire hall. It was marvellously meaningful to commemorate & celebrate Singapore s National Day with the golfing day out and the sing-alongs. We must do it again every national day and let me suggest an add-on toast to the Republic of Singapore after the singing of the National Anthem to enhance the gravitas to the special occasion of celebrating Singapore s National Day.
