Another calving season is upon us and prices remain steady as demand has kept pace with the increasing supply of red meat. As usual, there are uncertainties on the horizon. In addition to the old standards of weather and forage supply, the unknown effect of the current review of trade agreements and other policy matters will greatly effect demand, and therefore prices and profits, in the mid and long term. Because of the items out of our control it is as important as ever that we excel at those things we CAN control. One of these items is bull selection. In order to reduce uncertainties in that process it is imperative that we use the tools that are available to us. Do not disregard your visual analysis, especially as it relates to structural soundness. But add to those tools the comprehensive data that is available today in evaluating bulls. The Expected Progeny Differences () are proving to be an accurate and effective tool for trait selection, especially when combined with the actual measurements of the individual bulls. We see use of positively effecting our herd at both the individual and group level. As we write this we have calved over 40 first calf heifers and have touched three calves. The use of high calving ease EPD bulls is being reflected in the live herd. The bulls you will evaluate for this sale averaged 3.99 pounds per day of gain on a long 105 day test. The repeated use of high growth EPD bulls is being reflected in the live herd. We invite you to evaluate the phenotype, the individual performance records and the of the bulls offered in our sale. The predictability is bred in. The bulls have all received an extensive vaccination regimen, have tested negative for BVD and are semen tested.
