BOSTON RED SOX (56-71) vs. LOS ANGELES ANGELS OF ANAHEIM (76-50) Friday, August 22, 2014 7:10 p.m. ET Fenway Park, Boston, MA RHP Joe Kelly (0-1, 5.29) vs. RHP Felix Hernandez (13-4, 1.99) Game #128 Home Game #67 TV: NESN Radio: WEEI 93.7 FM, WCEC 1490 AM (Spanish) YESTERDAY S NEWS: The Red Sox fell 2-0 last night as the Angels completed a 4-game sweep at Fenway Park... Boston had not been swept in a 4+ game series since 4/16-19/10 vs. TB (0-4), and had been swept by the Halos in a series longer than 3 games just once before, from 5/18-20/62, also at Fenway Park (0-4). Boston was held to 1 hit in the game, a double by Will Middlebrooks in the 7th inning...this was the 5th time this year the Sox have been held hitless through 6 innings...boston has still not been no-hit since 1993 and was last no-hit at Fenway Park in 1958. Last night s 1-hitter marked the club s fewest hits in a 9-inning home game since tonight s opposing starter, Felix Hernandez, threw a 1-hit shutout in his Fenway Park debut on 4/11/07. SOX STATUS: The Red Sox have lost 5 straight games for the 1st time since a 5-game slide from 7/22-26...The club s only longer drought this year was a season-long 10-game slide from 5/15-25...The Sox have dropped 5 of their last 7 games and are 5-6 in their last 11. Each of Boston s last 4 wins have been comebacks, beginning on 8/12 in Cincinnati. The club is a season-high 15 games under.500... They are also a season-high 18.0 games back in the division, and are 6.0 games out of 4th. HOME FOR A SPELL: Tonight Boston continues a seasonlong 11-day, 11-game homestand...the stretch began with a 4-game sets against the Astros (2-2) and Angels (0-4), and concludes with these 3 games against the Mariners. This is Boston s longest homestand in over 3 years since an 11-gamer, 4/29-5/9/11...The Sox went 6-5 in that stretch vs. SEA (1-2), LAA (2-2), and MIN (3-1). RISING NUMBERS: In his last 3 games, David Ortiz has gone 8-for-10 (.800), 2B, 2 HR, 2 RBI, 4 BB, raising his season AVG from.250 to.263 and his OBP from.341 to.355. This is the 1st time in his career he has reached base safely at least 4 times in 3 straight games, the 1st Red Sox to do it since Johnny Damon from 6/3-5/02...No Red Sox has done this in 4 consecutive contests since Mike Andrews over 44 years ago (5/30-6/4/70). HE HAS 30 HR...: David Ortiz hit his 30th home run of the season Wednesday night, his 2nd in as many games and 4th in his last 5 contests...his 30 homers rank T-3rd in the AL and are 3 shy of MLB lead (Nelson Cruz, 33)...It is also the most HR among major league left-handed hitters. This is Ortiz s 8th career 30-homer campaign, all since joining the Red Sox in 2003...That ties Ted Williams for the most 30-homer seasons in franchise history. RBI MAN: David Ortiz leads MLB with 93 RBI this season, which accounts for 19% of Boston s 483 runs in 2014. Ortiz could become the 2nd major leaguer to lead his league in RBI for a team that finished last in that league in runs scored...only Wally Berger has done that, with an NL-high 130 RBI in 1935 for a Boston Braves team that finished last in the NL (and MLB) with 575 runs scored (Source: Elias). Ortiz is 7 RBI shy of his 8th career 30-HR, 100-RBI season...that would pass Ted Williams (7) for the most in franchise history. MOST 30-HR/100-RBI SEASONS IN RED SOX HISTORY PLAYER (R/L) SEASONS YEARS David Ortiz (L) 7 2003-07, 10, 13 Ted Williams (L) 7 1939, 41-42, 46-47, 49, 51 Manny Ramirez (R) 6 2001-06 Jimmie Foxx (R) 5 1936-40 Jim Rice (R) 4 1977-79, 83 RISP STALL: Boston is 2-for-42 with RISP over the current 5-game slide...they have left 44 on base in that time, with at least 1 runner stranded in 31 of the 45 innings (69%). SOX AND M S: Tonight the Sox open a 3-game set with the Mariners at Fenway Park, concluding their 6-game season set...the Sox dropped 2 of 3 at Safeco Field, 6/23-25. Boston needs to sweep the series to take claim the season set against Seattle for a 5th straight year and the 6th time in the last 7 seasons beginning in 2008. The Red Sox are 227-165 (.579) all-time against the Mariners, the top win pct. for any AL club against Seattle since the Mariners 1st season in 1977. AT HOME WITH SEATTLE: Boston has won its last 9 home games against the Mariners dating back to 5/1/11, the club s longest ever home win streak against the M s... The Sox had won 7 straight vs. Seattle at Fenway Park 4 times previously, last from 5/18/02-5/28/04. In those 9 games, the Red Sox are batting.313 and have outscored the Mariners 57-29. LAST OF THE WEST: The current series ends the Red Sox 2014 slate against the AL West...After this set, 25 of Boston s remaining 32 contests will be against division rivals... The club s only non-division foes will be KC (4 G) and PIT (3 G) to begin the final road trip of the season. ON THE OFFENSE: The Red Sox, who have scored 9 runs over their last 5 games, rank last in the AL overall with both 483 runs scored and 3.80 runs per game. Boston is 27-16 (.628) when tallying at least 10 hits, and 49-32 (.605) record when scoring at least 3 runs. KEEPING THE LEAD: The Red Sox are 44-0 this season when leading after 8 innings...boston is the only major league team that has not lost when ahead entering the 9th, and has been since the Padres lost on 7/5. Of Boston s 56 wins, 12 have come in games the club was not leading to begin the 9th inning (21%). CATCHING ON: With Boston this year, Christian Vazquez has thrown out 7 of 16 attempted base stealers (44%), the 2nd-best rate among major leaguers with 20+ games at catcher (STL s Yadier Molina, 47%)...He has also picked off 2 base runners, 4th most in the AL...Sox pitchers have allowed more than 4 runs in just 2 of his 25 starts this season. CLOSE CALLS: Boston has played 48 one-run games this year (24-24), most in the AL and 3rd most in the majors behind Miami s 51 and Cincinnati s 49...The Sox have already played 6 more 1-run games than in all of 2013 (42, 21-21). The Sox 24 one-run wins are 2nd in the AL to BAL s 25...Boston s 24 one-run losses are the most in the AL and 3rd in MLB behind CIN (31) and NYM (25). The Sox are on a pace to play 61, 1-run games this year, which would break the club record of 59 set in 1961 (32-27)...It would be the most 1-run decisions for an AL team since the 1993 Royals played 70. YAZ TURNS 75: Carl Yastrzemski turns 75 birthday today... He played his entire 23-year career with the Red Sox from 1961-83 and is the club leader with 3,308 games played. When Yaz was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1989, he became the 1st Little League alumnus to be enshrined. KEEP CLINCHING: Two minor league Red Sox affiliates -- the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs and Rookie-level Dominican Summer League Red Sox -- have clinched the playoffs. Among Boston s other affiliates, the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League Red Sox are leading their division, while Triple-A Pawtucket and High-A Salem both hold the lead in their respective Wild Card races...short-a Lowell is only 3.5 games out of its Wild Card. OWENS AN ALL-STAR: Today Henry Owens was named to the Double-A Eastern League s Year-End All-Star Team as its LHP...In 20 starts with the Sea Dogs this season, he went 14-4 with a 2.60 ERA and 126 strikeouts in 121.0 IP.
