Taunton School Boys' Outdoor and Indoor Hockey Records (with Girls' Hockey Top Ten Performances) Mr J P Evans started hockey at Taunton School in the Spring Term of 1937. The weather was poor that term and the only match was against a Masters XI at the end of term (the result of which is unknown). The first recorded School hockey match was at home against King's College, Taunton in the Spring Term of 1938. Taunton School won the game 2-1. Since then hockey has grown in to a major sport in the School for both boys and girls. There have been unbeaten seasons and county, regional and national cup successes in both outdoor and indoor hockey. Taunton School students and Old Tauntonians have played at International level for England, Scotland and Wales. This is a record of some of the outstanding achievements within Taunton School Boys' Hockey. There will be some gaps and errors, so if anyone knows a verifiable fact that is missing or needs correction, please e-mail Clive Large (clive.large@tauntonschool.co.uk). The records for teams are given for league matches against other school 1st XIs or A teams (i.e. full matches during the normal season} and not tournament, cup games or touring sides from overseas, as these matches are often shorter and are often not against full strength opposition. Pre-season matches have also been omitted, as both sides often use the games to give different players a trial in the 1st XI and matches are often shortened. Friendly games against Men's sides are also not included. Tournaments, which the School have won, and cup successes in being Somerset champions, which involves beating Millfield, who are the top sports school in the country, reaching the West regional final or nationals both outdoors and indoors are recorded separately, as are other notable results and achievements. The records for the best seasons below are for seasons in which a minimum number of 9 matches were played in a normal season. Taunton School 1st XI Top Ten Best Seasons - sides with similar records have then been ranked on the percentage of wins in a season (then goal difference): 1. 2012 Played 12 Won 12 Drawn 0 Lost 0 GF 74 GA 13 (Capt: Thomas Abell, Coaches: David H Tarr and Greg T Durston) 2. 2011 P 10 W 9 D 1 L 0 GF 59 GA 15 (Capt: Guy Skinner, Coaches: DHT and Declan C Rogers) 3. 1981 P 12 W 10 D 2 L 0 GF 34 GA 4 (Capt: James Horne, Coach: Richard B Jowett) 4. 1974 P 11 W 9 D 2 L 0 GF 34 GA 11 (Capt: Neil Longstreet, Coach: RBJ) 5. 1977 P 11 W 9 D 2 L 0 GF 29 GA 9 (Capt: Philip MacLeod, Coach: RBJ) 6. 1982 P 12 W 9 D 3 L 0 GF 36 GA 11 (Capt: Julian Blake, Coach: RBJ) 7. 1978 P 9 W 6 D 3 L 0 GF 21 GA 7 (Capt: Alastair Tulloch, Coach: RBJ) 8. 2006 P 10 W 9 D 0 L 1 GF 33 GA 5 (Capt: Oliver Deasy, Coaches: Clive D Large and DHT) 9. 1972 P 9 W 7 D 1 L 1 GF 24 GA 3 (Capt: Nicholas Cox, Coach RBJ) 10. 2005 P 9 W 7 D 1 L 1 GF 26 GA 10 ( Capt: Oliver Deasy, Coach: CDL)

The 2012 season was the 75 th anniversary of hockey at Taunton School and was the most successful 1st XI season ever. The results were as follows: v Bristol Grammar (H) W 6-1 v King s, Bruton (A) W 6-1 v Exeter (A) W 7-2 v Queen s College (H) W 11-0 v Bryanston (A) W 4-1 v Sherborne (A) W 4-0 v Millfield (H) W 7-1 v Blundell s (A) W 6-1 v King s College (A) W 2-1 v Canford (H) W 4-3 v Wellington(A) W 10-0 v West Buckland (A) W 7-2 Bath Festival v Windsor W 3-1 v King's, Macclesfield W 5-0 v King's College, Wimbledon W 6-2 The following indoor and outdoor records for 1st VI and 1st XI sides were set in the 2011/12 season: Indoor Hockey - The first team to have won the Somerset and West U18 (Capt: Oliver Large) Cups in the same season The first team to reach a national U18 Cup semi-final Outdoor Hockey - The first perfect season P 12 W 12 D 0 L 0 GF 74 GA 13 (Capt: Thomas Abell) The highest average number of goals per game in a season 6.17 goals per game The highest total number of goals scored 74 The largest average winning margin per game 5.08 goals The first season with two wins scoring 10 goals or more The first winners of the Wessex Cup The biggest ever win over Millfield 7-1 Thomas Abell was the top goal scorer with 20 league goals Other facts - It was the second back-to-back unbeaten season ( the others were in the 1981 and 1982 seasons) The team also had the eleventh best defensive record up to 2012, only conceding and average of 1.08 goals per game The first school match in 1938 was a home game against King s College, which Taunton won 2-1. This was the same result (although it was an away game) as this year s match 74 years later (i.e. the 75th season of school matches at Taunton School) Eight of the twelve matches were played away from home

Other notes: The 2011 side, captained by Guy Skinner and coached by Dave Tarr and Declan Rogers and captained by Guy Skinner and the 1977 side captained by Philip Macleod and coached by Richard Jowett are the only two sides in the history of the School not to lose a single full game (i.e. not including shorter cup games), including pre-season matches. In 2011 the team comfortably won their two other pre-season games against St. George's College, Weybridge, 5-1 and Reed's School, Cobham 7-2. Their overall record was P 12 W 11 D 1 L 0 GF 71 GA 18. In 1977, in their six other matches the team drew against the Old Tauntonians 1-1 and beat 5 other Men's sides including the Oxford University Occasionals (2nd XI) side 3-2. Their overall record was P 17 W 14 D 3 L 0 GF 48 GA 21. The 2011/12 indoor team, captained by Oliver Large and coached by Dave Tarr and Greg Durston is the most successful 1st team cup side ever. They are the only 1st team to be both Somerset (beating King's College 1-0 in the final) and West champions (beating Dean Close 4-3 in the final) in the same season. They went to the indoor U18 nationals and reached the semi-finals, losing 0-1 to Cranleigh, thereby finishing in the top four schools in the country. Other Unbeaten Season: 1966 P 7 W 5 D 2 L 0 GF 22 GA 5 (Capt: Thomas Jameson, Coach: RBJ) Taunton School Regional and National Hockey Records (for both Boys' and Girls' Hockey) Below are the schools achievements reaching the top ten in the country in the national year group cups. Regional performances are given where a school side has either won the West Tournament or has finished second, together with the side's performance in the Nationals. In the 1970s and 1980s there were many unbeaten U14A, U15A and SCA sides, but there were often less than 9 games played (see note for exception for 2008 U14A side) and records are not readily available. However the performance of the 1981 U14A side was exceptional. Not only were they unbeaten, but they were also Somerset, West and National champions, wining the inaugural U14 national schools cup. The 1982 side then repeated their cup successes in winning the Somerset, West and National U14 cups. Note: As some schools do not run an U16A team, the U16A team often play other schools' 2nd or 3rd XIs, so no U16A unbeaten seasons are given; also sometimes strong U16A players will play up in the 1st XI. However the 2010 U16A (Capt: Thomas Abell Coaches: Thomas E Grant and DHT) side's performance was exceptional and is worth recording. Despite losing four players to the 1st XI, the side was unbeaten winning all 6 matches (one game was cancelled due to snow and two other games were cancelled due to national and regional tournaments) in the regular season. The league record was P 6 W 6 D 0 L 0 GF 28 GA 5. With the return of the four 1st XI players, Thomas Abell, George Cook, Oliver Large and Harry Speedy, the side were both Somerset and West U16 Champions, winning 9 and drawing 1 of their cup games. Their County and Regional cup record was P 10 W 9 D 1 L 0 GF 44 GA 5. In the nationals they won 3 and lost one game in their pool and drew 2-2 against Kingston Grammar School in the 3rd/4th place play-off and then won the penalty flick competition 4-2. The side were 3rd in the country with their only loss in the whole season being 1-3 against the national champions Cranleigh at the national finals. Their record at the national finals was P 5 W 3 D 1 L 1 GF 12 GA 7. Their overall record was P 21 W 18 D 2 L 1 GF 84 GA 17. In indoor hockey, in the same season, the same side were West champions and reached the semi-final of the national indoor finals, finishing in the top four hockey schools in the country. Taunton School were the only school in the country to finish in the top four schools in the country at both outdoor and indoor hockey at U16 level in 2010 and the side are the best performing U16A team at both indoor and outdoor

hockey combined in the same season in the history of the school (although the 1986/87 U16 side were Somerset, West and National indoor champions).
