Used Equipment Blog Team registration Mammoth Middle School Equipment Swap Volume 1, Issue 1 MMSST's season begins; Hello Everyone, - well it is October and that means kids have settled into their school schedules. Soccer, football, volleyball, and cross country running are the focus of many but soon skiing / riding and all things related to winter snow sports will be up front and center. Here at the Mountain - there are signs of workers busy with the prep for the new ski season and the closing of our summer biking season; setting aside the climbing wall and bungy jump until next June. October for MMSST means; registration, staff rehiring and hiring, sorting calendars / planning, and equipment - just to mention a few. That brings us to the weekend of October 20 and 21st. Please read through this newsletter to see the participating shops and plans for the weekend. We are so fortunate to have the support of our local shops both now and throughout the season. Beyond the equipment, the weekend will involve a snow dance (come on Mother Nature), an evening movie in the Village, and a hosted breakfast at Snowcreek Athletic Club. Meeting some new members of our staff along with renewing acquaintances with returning staff. The opportunity to take a sneak peek at the new Team Headquarters. And learn more about the new Winter Tutorial program. October 2012 There will be physical testing occurring. This is compulsory for the older alpine athlete and they should be in contact directly with their lead coach to discuss scheduling of this. Check out some of the photos throughout this newsletter - summer fun stuff. Please send me your RSVPs for the weekend. Thank you, Pam. STAFF INTRODUCTION ASSISTANT DIRECTOR; CARL UNDERKOFFLER To: Athletes and Families: I am extremely honored to have been given the opportunity to a be part of the Ski Team. The stars have finally aligned and I have returned to main lodge, where my employment with Mammoth began as a ski instructor in 1983. My most recent position was with June Mountain where I held the position as the Director of the Ski and Snowboard School. I d like to thank all of you that have made my transition back to Mammoth a smooth one. From some of the parents that have called and those in the office, especially Pam Lonza, Mark Brownlie, Kevin Francis, Ben Wisner, Pete Korfiatis, John Armstrong, Kerry Brownlie, and Harry Blackburn who have given me the support and guidance for my transition. My background is teaching skiing and I am proud to say it is what I do for a living. Currently, the President of the Professional Ski Instructors of America and American Association of Snowboard Instructors Western Division, (PSIA-AASI-W) allows me to have my finger on the pulse of the industry. My involvement with this organization began at 16 years old. The life lessons and experiences this group has given me are priceless. The perspective I will bring to the team will be from two sides, as an educator with 35+ years in the business and as a parent. I am the father of Lucas and Cody. Husband to Emily that many of you know to be the energizer bunny that knows how to enjoy every opportunity she gets to be on the snow. My advice Stay out of her way on a powder day. One of my desires and initiatives is to help in the education of our staff and our parents. Using PSIA standards, guidelines, and methodologies will allow us to build a staff that is knowledgeable and creative. Giving our parents a better understanding of technique and tactics will help them understand why coaches do what they do. By bringing all of us together as athletes, parents, and coaches we will build a community that is supportive and positive. We are all in this together. We must let coaches coach, parents cheer, and athletes perform. This is not a new concept or idea but we now have a great staff in place to make things happen. We are one of the only resorts in the country that has the length of the season that can and will allow us to create champions. By providing programs that are both skill and performance based; we will place athletes into prestigious universities and appointments to national teams while building responsible people along the way. A strategic plan has been created to help all stakeholders understand where we are going. The plan includes communication mediums, educational development, programming, and infrastructure. At our parent meetings, we will share the plan and answer any questions you may have. I look forward to being a part of such a dedicated group of parents, athletes, and staff. Please do not hesitate to grab me for a chair ride and fill me in on your perspective. Sincerely, Carl Assistant Director, Mammoth Mountain Ski and Snowboard Team 760-934-0795; cell, 760-914-0428; email, cunderkoffler@mammoth-mtn.com
Page 3 Team Weekend Equipment Guidelines for the younger athlete: The key points that you will need to share with our Retailers and Reps are: Athlete s ability and intensity, Age, Weight, and Height (in centimeters to the top of head and to nose level). This will make it easier to recommend boots that will flex easily, as well as appropriate type of skis. A general rule of thumb is that J5 s and younger will need only one pair of skis, these should have a slalom type sidecut. J4 s and older (depending on commitment level) will generally look at event specific skis i.e. 1 pair for Slalom and 1 pair of Giant Slalom. Safety equipment is a key component for all. We recommend spine protectors for all Freeride and J3 and older athletes. Surefoot is proud to continue our outstanding relationship with the Mammoth Mountain Ski Team for the winter of 12/13. Surefoot will continue to offer our popular year round Growing Pains program, as well as any technical support needed throughout the season. Here s how the program works: If within two years of the date of purchase of a pair of ski boots, the buyer outgrows the boots (in size), they can return the boots for a 50% credit toward the purchase of the new pair of boots. In addition, any child still in their growing years can purchase a Surefoot orthotic along with ski boots and if they outgrow the Surefoot orthotic they can get a new one with the purchase of a ski boot at no charge. Mammoth Surefoot will be stocking Nordica, Lange, Salomon and Tecnica junior/adult race boots. We will also be carrying a selection of junior free ride boots. Once again, we will have a full selection of POC helmets, goggles and protective gear for racers and free riders. Look forward to seeing everyone soon. Thanks, Todd Koenig Manager Surefoot Mammoth 760-924-8333 mammoth@surefoot.com If an athlete has the talent and motivation to excel in their sport, National Team selection can be a reality.
