VARSITY GIRLS VOLLEYBALL 1. GENERAL LEAGUE POLICIES 1.1 Eligibility a) To be eligible to participate in CSAA Volleyball a student must be enrolled in and attend in school. b) A student establishes initial eligibility upon the first day of attendance at any school or by trying out for and being selected for membership on a school team. c) A player must play in at least Four (4) regular season games in order to be eligible for post season. d) For participation in Varsity Volleyball competition, a student shall only be eligible while enrolled in grades 9-12 up until their 20 th birthday. e) Any student who will reach the age 20 before or during the season (before June 1 st of the current school year), cannot participate. f) Students in grade 8 th may participate in varsity competition if their school does not participate in junior high school competition. g) If a student in grade 8 th participates in varsity competition for a school that participates in junior high school competition, that student is ineligible to participate in junior high school completion. 1.2 Uniforms a) All participating schools are expected to be in full uniforms by their second game. b) Teams must be in matching uniforms shirts with unique numbers for each player. c) A team does not have matching uniforms before their first regular season game MUST inform the league beforehand. 1.3 Jewelry Rule a) All earrings, facial piercings, body piercings, and bands must be removed before start of game. 1.4 Rosters a) Each participating school MUST submit a team roster to the league office BEFORE the first regular season game. This will be STRICTLY ENFORCED. Any team not providing a team roster before the 1st game (without a written exemption from the Director of Athletics) will forfeit their games until the roster is submitted. b) All team rosters will consist of a maximum of 20 players and MUST contain the following Information: Name of school Names and telephone numbers of head coach and assistant coaches Legal first and last name of each player Grade, age, and month and year of birth of each player (day is not needed) Uniform number of each player. c) It is the responsibility of each member school to ensure the accuracy of the information provided on the league roster. The information provided on the submitted roster is considered official and will be the evidential basis of any eligibility challenges. d) Changes to the roster cannot be made after it is submitted to the league office without the written consent of the Director of Athletics. e) Roster changes will be approved/ denied at the sole discretion of the Director of Athletics in accordance with the hardship provision. 1.4 Schedule a) All participating schools MUST be willing to play on Saturday s and be prepared to play double headers as well. b) Each participating schools MUST submit a team Roster to the league office before the first regular season game. This will be STRICTLY ENFORCED c) Schools will be given ten (10) Blackout dates for the season, that do not include the following Holidays Columbus Day Yom Kippur Election Day Veterans Day Thanksgiving Halloween i. There will be 3 drafts to the schedule ii. Once the Final schedule is emailed, no changes will be made; unless there was a mistake on CSAA behalf. 1.5 Playoff Tournament and Tie breakers a) Playoffs teams will be ranked in the standings by its overall division record. b) Head to head record results between teams will be used as the first tiebreaker. c) Finally if the two teams did not play head to heads, points given up during the regular season will be the final criteria. 2. GAME DAY POLICIES 2.1 Game Duration a) A minimum of 6 players must be prepared to play by game time. b) Late players cannot participate once the set has begun. c) Both team lineups are due at the end of the warm-up period on the court d) Each team must supply it own back line judge. e) Players may not change numbers at anytime during a match, once the line- up for the first set has been submitted. f) All teams have two (2) 30 second timeout per set. 2.2 Forfeits a) A fifteen (15) minute forfeit time is allowed for all games. This will be STRICTLY ENFORCED by the umpires unless extra time is authorized by Director of Athletics. 2.3 Protest a) Protests to an Official judgment call WILL NOT BE ALLOWED. Judgment calls include (but are not limited to) Ball in Ball out Ball touch the net b) Protest can be made only on rules violation. c) Protest must be notified to head game Official or game supervisors d) Protest has to be emailed to league before 24 hours 2.4 Sportsmanship a) All teams are expected to show sportsmanship before and after each game. Coaches and players MUST lineup and shake hands before and after each game. Exceptions to this rule are made for injured players AFTER the coach informs the umpire of the injury. b) Only coaches, players, and managers are allowed in the dugout during the game. a. Coaches and managers must be in team apparel/colors and players must be in uniform. 3. GAME PLAY RULES 3.1 Dimensions a) The height of the net measured from the center of the court is 7 feet, 41 /8 inches. The two ends of the net must be at the same height. 3.2 The serve a) Server must serve from behind the restraining line (end line) until after contact. b) Ball can be served from hand or released out of hand c) If served out of hand, can be served over hand or under hand d) Ball must be clearly visible to opponents before serve. e) Served ball may graze the net and drop to the other side for point. f) First game serve is determined by coin toss, each subsequent game shall be served by the previous game loser. g) Serve must be returned by a bump or set. Attacking the serve is NOT allowed. h) The servicer must make contact within 8 seconds. 3.3 Scoring a) Rally scoring will be used. b) There will be a point scored on every score of the ball. c) Offense will score on a defense miss or out of bounds hit. d) Defense will score on an offensive miss, out of bounds hit, or serve into the net. e) First 2 set will be played to 25 points f) 3 rd sets will be played to 15 points; teams must switch sides at 8 points P a g e 4
g) Must win by 2 points. h) The best 2 out 3 games. 3.4 Rotation a) Teams will rotate each time they win the serve. b) Players shall rotate in a clockwise manner. c) There shall be 6 players on each side. 3.5 Libreo a) The Libreo can replace any back- row player on her team, without prior notice to the officials. b) The Libreo must wear a contrasting jersey for her team, to identify herself. 3.6 Playing the game (VOLLEY) a) Maximum of three hits per side. b) Player may not hit the ball twice in succession (A block or body hit is considered a hit) c) Ball may be played off the net during a volley and on serve. d) A ball touching a boundary line is good. e) A legal hit is contact with the ball by a player body above and including the waist which does not allow the ball to visibly come to a rest. f) If two or more players contact the ball simultaneously, it is concerned one play and the players involved may not participate in the next play. g) A player must not block a serve. h) Switching positions will be allowed only between front line players (only after the serve). 3.7 Substitution a) A player can be substituted at anytime, however once the whistle is blown; the substation must stop. b) Each team is allowed to make 18 substitutions per set (18 is the maximum). Substitutions may be called only in between points or at the beginning of a set and may not be called during a point. c) Player having been substituted for may only go back on the court for the player whom substituted them. These counts as 2 substitutions of the 18 allowed per team in a set. d) (Ex- player 1 is in the game. Player 2 goes in for player 1. Player 3 can go in for player 2. Throughout the set player 2 can only go in for player 1). e) If a player gets injured or become ill during a set, they will have to be replaced by a legal substitute. This will not count as a team substitution. 3.8 Basic Violations a) Stepping on or over the line on a serve. b) Failure to serve the ball over the net successfully. c) Hitting the ball illegally (Carrying, Palming, Throwing, etc.) P a g e 5
d) Touches of the net with any part of the body while the ball is in play. -If the ball is driven into the net with such force that it causes the net to contact an opposing player, no foul will be called; and the ball shall continue to be in play. P a g e 6
