MEDIA GUIDE 2013 DUKE MEN S SOCCER JOHN KERR head Coach 6th Season Duke 87 Record at Duke: 53-37-11 Career Record: 134-96-24 John Kerr enters his sixth season as the head coach of the Duke men s soccer team. Kerr, inducted into the Duke Sports Hall of Fame in 2004, replaced longtime coach John Rennie, who spent 29 seasons at the helm of the Blue Devil program. Under the guidance of Kerr, the Blue Devils have advanced to four NCAA Tournaments and to the round of 16 in 2009, collected seven NSCAA All-America awards, and a Hermann Trophy winner. Duke faced its fair share of challenges in the 2012 campaign with the departure of the national player of the year and MLS No. 1 pick Andrew Wenger and top assist man Christopher Tweed-Kent along with a variety of injuries. The Blue Devils finished the year 8-8-2 overall, just missing a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2003. All eight of Duke s losses came by one goal as the Blue Devils sacrificed just 11 goals all season. Duke s 0.70 goals against average was the lowest since the 1987 season when the Blue Devils posted a 0.63 average. Senior goalkeeper James Belshaw highlighted the 2012 season earning NSCAA All-America third team honors, while center back Sebastien Ibeagha was selected as the ACC Defensive Player of the Year to mark the fifth straight season Duke has captured a major ACC award and the second time a Blue Devil under Kerr earned the defensive MVP honor. Both were All-ACC first team selections as well. The 2011 season featured numerous highlights. The Blue Devils finished the year 11-8-3 overall and 4-3-1 for third place in the ACC. Duke advanced to the ACC Tournament semifinal for the first time under Kerr and to the NCAA Tournament second round for the third consecutive season. Kerr s fourth season was highlighted by the individual accolades of Wenger. The Lititz, Pa., native made history when he was voted as the ACC Offensive Player of the Year after collecting the ACC Defensive and ACC Rookie of the Year awards in the previous two seasons. Under Kerr s tutelage, Wenger went on to win the MAC Hermann Award, Duke s first national player of the year honor since 2000 and the first under Kerr. With the award, Kerr became the first Hermann Award winner to go on to coach a Hermann Award recipient. Wenger capped off the year by being selected first in the Major League Soccer Super Draft, the first Blue Devil to be taken No. 1. While Wenger provided many offensive highlights, the play of Belshaw and Ibeagha also garnered notice. Belshaw picked up All-ACC first team accolades, while Ibeagha was voted to the second team. Nick Palodichuk also made waves his rookie season as the only freshman to earn All-ACC second team recognition. Awards rolled in for the Blue Devils off the field as well in 2011, as Duke landed three players Wenger, Christopher and Daniel Tweed-Kent on the The Kerr File Collegiate Coaching History Duke University Head Coach 2008-present Record at Duke 53-37-11 Harvard University Head Coach 1999-2007 Record at Harvard 81-59-13 Duke University Assistant Coach 1992 Collegiate Playing Career Duke University 1983-86 1983 NCAA Second Round 1985 NCAA First Round 1986 National Champions Individual Honors 1986 National Championship 1986 Hermann Trophy recipient 1986 NSCAA Player of the Year 1986 Soccer America Player of the Year 1986 Missouri Athletic Club Player of the Year 1986 ACC Player of the Year NSCAA First-Team All-American, 1985-86 NSCAA First-Team All-Region, 1985-86 First-team All-ACC, 1985-86 Coaching Honors NCAA berths 2001, 06, 07, 08, 09, 10, 11 15 first-team All-Ivy League 15 All-ACC Selections 6 - CoSIDA Academic All-Americans 7 - NSCAA All-Americans 3 ACC Offensive Player of the Year 3 Ivy League Rookie of the Year 3 - NSCAA Scholar All-Americans 2 ACC Defensive Player of the Year 2 Ivy League Player of the Year 1 - Hermann Award winner 1 ACC Freshman of the Year 1 Ivy League title (2006) - 5 -

2013 DUKE MEN S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE Capital One Academic All-America squad, the first time in program history. Wenger also was selected as the ACC Men s Soccer Scholar Athlete of the Year to lead Duke s ACC-best six All-ACC Academic Team selections. Belshaw joined Wenger on the NSCAA Scholar All-America teams. In 2010, Kerr guided Duke to the NCAA Tournament for the 24th time and for the sixth straight season. The Blue Devils compiled a 10-6-4 overall record and finished fourth in the ACC. He mentored the ACC Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year in Ryan Finley and Wenger, respectively. In addition to the All-ACC first team selections of Finley and Wenger, senior Cole Grossman garnered All-ACC first team recognition and Belshaw picked up second team honors. The three selections on the first team were the most for Duke since 1999. Wenger headlined the national awards for the Blue Devils in 2010, earning NSCAA All-America first team honors. Finley was voted to the All-America third team and Duke had five NSCAA All-South Region choices. Academically, Duke was equally as successful with a league-best eight players being named to the All-ACC Academic Team. Christopher Tweed-Kent also earned a spot on the ESPN Academic All-America squad, the third such time a player under Kerr has done so. Kerr s second season with the Blue Devils was a successful one as Duke advanced to the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament, the farthest it had reached since doing so in 2005. Finishing with a 14-7-0 overall record, Duke garnered four more wins and scored 10 more goals than the previous season. Under the watchful eye of Kerr, Wenger excelled in his freshman season as he was voted the ACC Rookie of the Year and to the All-ACC first team. Junior midfielder Grossman earned All-ACC second team recognition, while Finley garnered a spot on the All-ACC Freshman squad. Five players were selected to the NSCAA All-South Region team, including Wenger capturing a first team nod. Off the field, the Blue Devils were outstanding in the classroom as 20 members of the squad posted at least a 3.0 grade point average to earn ACC Honor Roll recognition. Duke placed a league-high eight players on the All-ACC Academic team, while senior Josh Bienenfeld was voted to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America first team. In his first season as head coach, Kerr posted a 10-8-2 record in leading the Blue Devils to their 22nd NCAA Tournament appearance. He helped mentor first team All-America selection Mike Grella and NSCAA All-Region choice Darrius Barnes. Both went on to successful first seasons in the professional ranks. Kerr, a 1987 graduate of Duke who captained the Blue Devils to the 1986 national championship, returned to his alma mater following nine seasons as the head coach at Harvard University. While with the Crimson, Kerr compiled a ledger of 81-57-13 and earned trips to the NCAA Tournament in his last two campaigns. During his tenure at Harvard, Kerr produced 15 first team All-Ivy League selections, three Ivy League Rookie of the Year choices and two Ivy League Player of the Year picks. In addition, the Crimson led the nation in scoring in 2006 en route to the Ivy League championship. In addition, Kerr served as the coaching director of the F.C. An outstanding tactician, he has helped Kerr mentor numerous All-ACC and ACC Players of the Year over the previous three seasons, including the 2011 M.A.C Hermann Trophy winner Andrew Wenger. Having an influence in all areas of the field, Brady helped the Blue Devils' defense excel in 2012. Duke posted nine shutouts, while allowing just 0.70 goals per game. The 0.70 goals against average was the lowest for a Duke squad since 1987. With Wenger leading the way and under Brady's watch in 2011, the Blue Devils offense flourished scoring the most goals since Duke had 50 in 2006. Duke was shut out just three times and had three-plus goals in six contests in 2011. Brady came to Duke after serving as the women s soccer head coach at American University for eight seasons and assists Kerr in all aspects of the program. MEDIA GUIDE 2013 DUKE MEN S SOCCER CHRISTOPHER TWEED-KENT Volunteer assistant Coach 1st Season Duke '12 Christopher Tweed-Kent joined the Duke coaching staff as a Volunteer Assistant Coach in August 2013. A 2012 graduate of Duke with a degree in mechanical engineering, Tweed-Kent will help the coaching staff with all aspects of the program. Tweed-Kent joined the Duke men s soccer squad as a sophomore as a walk-on in 2009 and made an immediate impact. A native of Pittsfield, Mass., he started 19 of the Blue Devils 21 matches as they advanced to the NCAA Tournament third round. Tweed-Kent tallied a goal and four assists, including the game-winning assist against No. 2 Maryland, in his inaugural campaign. Playing primarily in the left midfield, Tweed-Kent started all but one game over the course of the 2010 and 2011 seasons. He registered a pair of goals and a team-best 11 assists in 2010. 2013 DUKE MEN S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE Kevin M. White VICE PRESIDENT & DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS ADJUNCT PROFESSOR OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION ST. JOSEPH S COLLEGE 72 Kevin M. White was named Duke University s vice president and director of athletics on May 31, 2008. He also serves as an adjunct professor of business administration at the university. White, 61, joined the Duke family after leading Notre Dame s athletics program to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom from 2000-08. He also has held a number of prominent national leadership roles within intercollegiate athletics, including his service in 2006-07 as president of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and in 2005-06 as president of the Division I-A Athletic Directors Association. Guided by the Strategic Plan that was approved by Duke s Board of Trustees in April of 2008, White made an immediate impact on Duke Athletics. In addition to leading the department to unprecedented success in competition, he reshaped the organization into a more efficient and modern department; strengthened ties to both campus and community constituents though consistent outreach efforts; successfully oversaw Duke s fundraising efforts during an economic downturn; completed partnerships with major corporate entities to enhance revenue streams; commissioned a master facilities plan to position Duke well into the 21st Century; and emphasized a stronger commitment to the university s intramural, club and recreational sports programs. Since White s arrival, Duke has captured three NCAA Championships women s tennis in 2009, men s basketball in 2010 and men s lacrosse in 2010 and 12 ACC titles (three in 2012). On the strength of 14 teams participating in NCAA Championship competition and robust finishes in several sports, Duke ranked 16th in the 2012 Learfield Sports Directors Cup standings, which determine an institution s all-around strength in intercollegiate athletics. The 16th-place showing marked the ninth consecutive year that Duke has ended among the nation s top 20 programs. In 2011, Duke placed fifth, matching the school s best finish in the rankings and its 1171.50 points earned were the most in program history. In White s four years at Duke, the Blue Devils placed 17th (2009), 10th (2010), fifth (2011) and 16th (2012) in the Directors Cup standings. Thirty-five Blue Devil teams ranked among the nation s top 10 teams during the past four seasons with six men s basketball (2009, 2010, 2011), men s lacrosse (2010) and women s tennis (2009, 2010) reaching No. 1. In all, 56 Duke teams advanced to NCAA postseason competition the last four seasons. Individually, 126 student-athletes earned All-America, 218 All-ACC and 136 All-Region or District honors the past four years. During White s tenure, Duke boasts nine NCAA individual champions in Curtis Beach (indoor track and field heptathlon in 2012), Juliet Bottorff (outdoor track and field 10k in 2011), Mallory Cecil (women s tennis in 2009), Abby Johnston (three-meter diving in 2011), Nick McCrory (platform diving in 2010 and 2011), and Becca Ward (women s fencing, saber in 2009, 2011 and 2012). In 2012, Duke celebrated two individual NCAA and 10 individual ACC titles. Academically, Duke teams continued strong performances under White. In the 2012 spring semester, 25 of 26 Blue Devil varsity teams earned grade point averages of 3.0 or better the exact amount that achieved the same during the fall of 2011. In two key elements in tracking a department s academic success, Duke ranked among the nation s best again. Duke posted a 97% Graduation Success Rate (GSR) and 14 teams achieved a 100% GSR. Thirteen Blue Devil teams were ranked in the top 10% of their respective sports in the most recent Academic Performance Rate (APR) Report, including the men s basketball and football teams. In the 2012 report, Duke (989) ranked second among all FBS schools, behind only Northwestern (995), and seventh among all Division I FBS and FCS programs. Individually in 2012, seniors Sophia Dunworth (women s volleyball) and Becca Ward (women s fencing) received prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships. Eight Duke student-athletes were selected CoSIDA Academic All-America, while 26 others received National Scholar-Athlete or Scholar All-America accolades. In White s four-year tenure, former women s tennis player Parker Goyer won a Rhodes Scholarship (2009), while track athlete Sally Liu (2009) and Allie Speidel (2011) earned Marshall Scholarships. Under White, Duke has continued its focus on outreach to the local community. Modeling the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills program s commitment to service, learning projects and outreach, approximately 500 Duke student-athletes across all sports participated in a combined effort of more than 2,000 community service hours. White s commitment to the overall mission of the university remains clear. In May 2011, Duke Athletics announced that a portion of ticket sales from Blue Devil regular season home sporting events will be directed to the Duke University Libraries. Per White s vision, the Duke Athletics Library Fund will generate significant unrestricted revenue for the Duke University Libraries to support teaching and research across the institution. In 2011-12, several facility projects were completed, impacting many of Duke s 26 varsity sports. The Pascal Fieldhouse, an 80,000 square-foot multipurpose facility that houses a 120-yard playing surface for the football program and other on-campus recreational activities, was completed and dedicated. The reconstruction of Williams Field, home to the Duke field hockey team, was also completed, as were minor renovations to the golf course. Major upgrades of soccer practice fields also began in 2012. White, who holds a Ph.D. in education, has taught graduate-level classes since 1982 and currently teaches a sports business course in Duke s Fuqua School of Business as part of Duke s MBA program. In August 2003, SI.com (the Sports Illustrated web site) listed White, then at Notre Dame, third in its rankings of the most powerful people in college football. In January 2004, The Sporting News listed him in its Power 100 as third among five names in the front office category (and the lone college athletics director among the 100). White previously served on numerous NCAA committees, including being an ex-officio member of the NCAA Committee on Academic Performance and a member of its Penalty and Rewards subcommittee. For several years, he was a representative with the football Bowl Championship Series. Additionally, White was part of the NCAA Coalition on Intercollegiate Athletics (COIA) that dealt with academics, fiscal reform and student-athlete well-being. Currently, he is the secretary of NCAA Football, a non-profit corporation that acts as the collective voice to promote college football, and serves on the Black Coaches and Administrators Board of Directors. Given his background and success, it is not surprising that 21 current or former directors of athletics were mentored by White. That impressive list includes Jim Sterk of Washington State and San Diego State, Tom Boeh of Ohio University and Fresno State, Ian McCaw of Northeastern, Massachusetts and Baylor, Bruce Van De Velde of Utah State, Iowa State and Louisiana Tech, Herman Frazier previously of Alabama-Birmingham and Hawaii, Rudy Keeling formerly of Emerson and now commissioner of the Eastern College Athletic (ECAC), Scott Devine of St. Mary s College (Md.), Tom Collins formerly of Ball State, Tim Van Alstine of Western Illinois, Mark Wilson of Tennessee Tech, Bubba Cunningham of Ball State, Tulsa and North Carolina, Sandy Barbour (who followed him at Tulane) of California-Berkeley, Jim Phillips of Northern Illinois and Northwestern, Bernard Muir of Georgetown, Delaware and Stanford, Sandy Hatfield Clubb of Drake, Vic Cegles of Long Beach State, Norwood Teague of Virginia Commonwealth and Minnesota, Bob Bierie previously of Loras College, Greg Capell previously of Loras College, Boo Corrigan of Army, and Bill Scholl of Ball State. Prior to joining Notre Dame in 2000, White served as athletic director at Arizona State University, Tulane University, the University of Maine and Loras College in Iowa, where he originated the National Catholic Basketball Tournament. Before becoming an administrator, White served as head track and field coach at Southeast Missouri State (1981-82) and assistant cross country and track and field coach at Central Michigan (1976-80). He began his coaching career at Gulf High School in New Port Richey, Fla., coaching cross country and track and assisting in football and wrestling. White earned his Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University in 1983 with an emphasis on higher education administration. In 1985, he completed postdoctoral work at Harvard University s Institute for Educational Management. He earned his master s degree in athletics administration from Central Michigan University in 1976 and his bachelor s degree in business administration in 1972 from St. Joseph s College in Rensselaer, Ind., where he also competed as a sprinter. White and his wife, Jane, a former college track and field coach, have five children and nine grandchildren. - 10 -

2013 DUKE MEN S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE 1986 National Champions The locals call Tacoma the "City of Destiny." They received no argument from the Duke soccer team in 1986. The Blue Devils brought home the school's first NCAA team championship, clinching the soccer title with a 1-0 victory over Akron on Dec. 13. On four previous occasions, athletic teams at Duke had played for national championships and lost, including one in soccer four years prior. The 1986 triumph erased some of the sting from Duke's 2-1, eight-overtime defeat by Indiana in the 1982 title match and fulfilled a four-year dream of that year's class of 11 seniors to return to the championship game and bring the trophy home. "Unfinished business" was the way coach John Rennie referred to Duke's title match. "This feels just unbelievable," he added. Blue Devils Tom Stone and Kelly Weadock claimed the offensive and defensive most valuable player awards in the game. Stone, a junior forward, scored the lone goal at 46:38, and senior sweeper Weadock, starting all 87 games in his Duke career, anchored the Blue Devils' defense to its 12th shutout of the season. Rennie found it hard to single out players for commendation, however. "If Duke University were to give a degree to this team, then it would be for chemistry," he said. "Our guys had their own magic formula for the last six weeks. Chemistry is what all great teams have." Although the game was played on the artificial indoor surface of the Tacoma Dome, Duke, 18-5-1, stuck with virtually the same game plan that had carried them to the championship game: attack early and get the ball out of their end quickly. The quick-striking Blue Devils took only 1:38 of the second half to put the game's only goal on the scoreboard. Robert Probst was fouled near midfield by Akron forward Roderick Scott. Freshman midfielder Joe Valenti took the long free kick for Duke. He crossed the ball over the head of Akron sweeper Matt Smith to the far post for Carl Williamson, who knocked it back to the near post for Stone. "It came right to my left leg and I swung away," said Stone, who drilled it high into the open net from seven yards out for his 16th goal of the year, just one off the school record. Half of those goals were game-winners, and Stone credited Rennie for making him a more effective offensive player that year. "All Coach Rennie has said," 'Get up in the box, your chances will come, I promise,'" Stone said. Four of his goals came in the NCAA playoffs, more than any other Blue Devil. Both teams concentrated their defenses to stop the opposition's top scorer. Duke used Probst, a freshman stopper, to mark Scott, a sophomore forward who was also a member of the Canadian National Team. Akron fullback Shaun Docking was assigned to Duke's John Kerr, who, following the championship, was named the recipient of the 1986 Hermann Trophy, given to the nation's top player, and the National Player of the Year Award of the Missouri Athletic Club. The Zips' Scott was held to two harmless first half shots by Probst, who earned Rennie's praise. "He's done that all year," the coach said. "He was able to shut down Scott for almost a full game. We always assign him to the opposition's most important player. Most of the damage Scott did was out away from the goal. We forced him to lay the ball out to other players, while he couldn't perform his magic." Added Rennie, "You win with defense. It's like that in any sport." Call it destiny if you like. The Duke soccer team could then wave their extended index fingers and chant, "We're number one," and know it was true.
