The Rams have competed in the premier Michigan Kick-Off tournament each season, and again, it will be one of the most challenging. CSU will face four teams in the two-day tourney, with all four ranked in the top 15 of this week s CWPA Varsity Top 20 poll. What s more, San Diego State, which is competing in the tournament but will not face CSU, is also ranked in the top 10. Year in and year out, this tournament is known nationwide as one of the premier tournaments in the country, associate head coach Mike Moody said. CSU has never shied away from top competition, and this is no different. Historically, the Rams have struggled against the elite competition, going just 2-26 in the tournament last winning in 2006. What makes it even more challenging is that CSU is 0-32 against its four opponents this weekend. We ve played this level of competition before, so we won t be surprised by it, Moody said. Our goal is to play our game. I expect us to play really, really tough team defense and an up-tempo transition game. I really feel like our offense is going to take care of itself. Our main focus will be to play really tough defense and to limit the teams opportunities to score quickly on us. Our speed and endurance is a strength of ours, so we need to use it. Despite struggling in the tournament, CSU has had several near-upsets over the years, including coming within one goal of beating No. 13 Indiana in 2011. Follow the action The Michigan Kick-Off Tournament Central page will have updated scores and stats at the conclusion of each game throughout the weekend. Stats can be accessed here: http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/w-wpolo/spec-rel/ wpw-kickoff-2013.html Why Michigan? So why schedule one of the toughest tournaments in the country to start the season? It s a premier tournament, but it s also become a recruiting tool, coach Mike Moody said. We ve had several girls come through our program from the Michigan-Ohio-Illinois area. Being out there consistently allows those good club programs in the area to see us, and we re getting good talent. Kelcy Barott is a prime example; Lauren Porteus and Orsi Nadasdy are, too.. That area is proving to produce some pretty good talent for us. Second, we re centrally located, and we feel like we need to go east of the Rocky Mountains to play, as well as west. We have that opportunity, and not a lot of schools do. Third, I d say it s become a tradition. Searching for a milestone win A victory against any of this weekend s four opponents would turn some heads. It would also be CSU s secondever win over a ranked foe. The Rams lone victory over a ranked team came on April 11, 2010, in a neutral pool against then-no. 17 UC San Diego. Fourth in the WWPA For the second consecutive season, CSU has been picked by the WWPA coaches to finish fourth in the league. It ties the highest-ever preseason seed. We went into the WWPA Championships last year seeded No. 8, so to have us at No. 4, I m a little bit surprised, associate head coach Mike Moody said. I know the talent that we have, and what we re capable of doing, but for others to see that as well, that feels good. Finishing ahead of CSU in the preseason poll is Loyola Marymount (49 points), UC San Diego (43) and Santa Clara (36). Loyola Marymount and UC San Diego are currently ranked. The bottom half of the poll includes Cal State East Bay (24), Sonoma State (20), Cal State Monterey Bay (15) and Cal State San Bernardino (7). 2012 WWPA FINAL REGULAR-SEASON STANDINGS Team W L Pct. vs. WWPA vs. T-20 Home Away Neutral LMU* 17 9 0.654 10-0 4-9 7-2 2-2 8-5 Cal State East Bay 17 11 0.607 10-6 1-5 7-0 5-3 5-8 UC San Diego 19 13 0.594 8-2 3-11 7-4 3-3 9-6 Cal State Bakersfield 22 16 0.579 11-4 2-12 7-5 5-3 10-8 Cal State Monterey Bay 17 13 0.567 6-7 0-6 8-3 2-4 7-6 Sonoma State 9 20 0.310 5-10 0-12 3-6 1-5 5-9 Santa Clara 9 25 0.265 7-8 0-15 4-7 1-5 4-14 Colorado State 6 20 0.231 3-9 0-13 0-3 0-9 6-8 Cal State San Bernardino 4 35 0.103 0-14 0-7 0-4 0-9 4-21 * Regular-season & tournament champion 2 2012 Colorado State Water Polo Year-By-Year Results Year Seed Record Finish 2005 12 2-1 9 2005 10 2-1 9 2007 9 2-2 7 2008 9 1-2 10 2009 6 2-2 6 2010 6 1-2 4 2011 4 2-1 5 2012 8 2-2 6 * 12 teams participated between 2005-08, 11 teams in 2009, 10 teams in 2010 and nine teams in 2011 and 2012.

Scheduling tough opponents Coach Mike Moody is known to piece together tough schedules, noting that more than half of his team s opponents over the past two seasons have been against teams ranked at some point in the Women s Varsity Top 20 poll. This season is no different, as 11 of CSU s 24 schedule games are against teams currently ranked. CSU s tournament at Santa Clara (April 6-7) has not announced the field yet. Double trouble Going into camp a year ago, coach Mike Moody knew he had two viable options for goalie. Now, more than a year later, it remains the same, as Moody expects both Melissa Fisher, a senior, and Michelle Slagle, a junior, to split time in net. Fisher holds three of CSU s top seven single-season saves totals, while Slagle, who transferred to CSU from Loyola Marymount, tied a single-game saves record with 16 stops at Michigan (Jan. 21, 2012). Her 124 saves last season ranks eighth in CSU single-season history. 500 Senior goalie Melissa Fisher became the second Ram to record 500 career saves, doing so against Brown on Feb. 11 of last year. In her three seasons, she has amassed 612 career stops, and trails only Krystyna McCright for CSU s all-time saves record. She should reach that midway through this season, needing 49 more saves. 2012 highlights The program received its first-ever national ranking, earning the No. 20 spot in the Women s Varsity Top 20 poll on Jan. 25. CSU earned three All-WWPA honors, including Kallie Berry (third team), Caroline Young (honorable mention) and Kelcy Barott (freshman). Four players earned Academic recognition from the WWPA and ACWPC: Kallier Berry, Michelle Smith, Stephanie Weed and Caroline Young. As a team, CSU was one of 13 schools to have a cumulative grade-point average above 3.0. It marked the first season played in the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center, CSU s new home facility and state-of-the-art pool in Thornton, Colo. The Rams recorded two victories in the WWPA Championships, securing the No. 6 spot after entering seeded eighth. Consecutive s with a Goal Laurien White...14 Shelby Schaefer...13 Kallie Berry...13 Caroline Young...12 Annie Quinn...12 On a roll Shelby Schaefer scored in 13 straight games from March 10 through the first game of April 15 last year, tying Kallie Berry s 2011 mark for second all-time and just one away from the program record. Entering the 2012 season, she s scored in nine consecutive contests, and could match her personal best with goals in each of the team s four games this weekend. Best in the nation Several individual Rams ranked among the top players in the nation in multiple statistical categories in 2012, including Caroline Young, who ranked third in the nation in assists per game. Helping hand Caroline Young, Shelby Schaefer and Kallie Berry all broke CSU s single-season assists record in 2012, and as a result, the Rams set a new single-season program record with 183 assists, 16 more than the previous mark, set in 2006. Young is now the all-time leader for assists in a season, with 45, followed by Schaefer (38) and Berry (36). The previous mark was 31, held by Ali Pavlik (2009) and Natalie Berge (2011). Against Cal State-San Bernardino (April 27), Young recorded six helpers, tying a program record. Also on the year, Young, Schaefer and Berry (twice) recorded four assists in a game, which is tied for sixth all-time. Block party With four field blocks to close the regular season, the Rams established a new program record, surpassing their 2010 mark of 61 swats, the first year water polo recorded field blocks as a stat. CSU finished 2012 with 72 stuffs, led by Caroline Young s 23, a new single-season best. New aquatic center For seven years, EPIC had been home to the Colorado State water polo team. But beginning in 2012, the Rams relocated to the VMAC, a new facility located in Thornton, Colo. I think it s a great opportunity for the state of Colorado, coach Mike Moody said. We re more centrally located there. I hope to bring a good fan base from the Denver and Boulder areas. It also allows the Rams to play their home games in a regulation water polo pool 25 meters in length by 20 meters in width, and at least seven meters deep for the first time. The VMAC is a $19.5-million facility that features a 765,000-gallon, 50-meter Olympic-size pool. The facility opened two years ago, and will be the site of the 2014 WWPA Championships.
