The Terps, ranked 20th in both polls this week, come into the tournament on a roll, having won nine of their last 11. The Terrapins are a No.4 seed for the third time in their last four appearances, also drawing a 4 in 2004 and 2007. Maryland has its last nine fi rst-round matchups, with the last time the Terps lost their opening game in the tournament coming in 1997. Maryland, a No. 10 seed last year in Kansas City, beat 7th-seeded California, 71-60, in the fi rst round. Senior guard Greivis Vasquez was named ACC Player of the Year last week, the fi rst Terrapin to win the award since Juan Dixon captured the honor in 2002. Head coach Gary Williams was voted ACC Coach of the Year, his second such honor and the fi rst since 2002. Balloting was conducted by the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association. Vasquez has been named thus far to three All-America teams. FoxSports.com and Sporting News named him to their fi rst team, with Yahoo Sports giving him a second-team nod. TERPS... Fan Support Attendance Continues to Soar Attendance for Maryland basketball remains consistently strong on a national basis. For the past 10 seasons, the Terps have been ranked in the top 10 nationally in overall attendance, home and away. Over the last seven years, the Terps have ranked at least 8th nationally in home attendance, which has skyrocketed to 2,127,133 - an average of 17,294 each time the Terps play in the Comcast Center. In 2007-08, Maryland ranked 6th in the nation as 341,050 watched 19 Terrapin basketball games, as the Terps played to 100 percent capacity for the second time in six seasons. In 2003-04, the Maryland basketball team fi nished fi fth nationally in home attendance average for the second-straight season and records were once again shattered at the Terps state-of-the-art Comcast Center. The last game the Terps failed to make a 3-pointer was 1/7/1999 when Maryland went 0-for-7 from 3-point range in a 71-66 win at Virginia. He averaged 27 points and seven assists a game as a junior at Santa Rita High School and is a two-time player of the year in the Tucson area. Commitment To Education Under Gary Williams, the Maryland basketball program continues to place a high priority on education and the personal growth of its studentathletes. Maryland has graduated eight of its last 10 seniors and all four current seniors (Jerome Burney, Greivis Vasquez, Eric Hayes, Landon Milbourne) are on track to earn their degrees this season. Burney has been named the recipient of the LeFrak Scholarship Award. The scholarship represents an endowment established by the Samuel J. and Ethel LeFrak Foundation, and is awarded annually to three Maryland student-athletes who exhibit extraordinary athletic, leadership and scholarship abilities. Many former Terps continue to work toward their degrees while continuing to pursue professional basketball opportunities. Keith Booth, a four-year starter and 1997 All-American, graduated in 2003 after pursuing a professional basketball career that included winning an NBA Championship in 1998, and is now one of Gary Williams assistant coaches. Former Terps Calvin McCall, Laron Profi t and Terrell Stokes are among the recent men s basketball players to earn degrees from the University of Maryland. Maryland student-athletes all work toward completion of their college degree with the assistance of the Academic Support and Career Development Unit. Booth Named Terps ACC Legend for 2010 Maryland assistant coach Keith Booth was one of the players honored this March at the 2010 ACC Tournament Legends Brunch held in Greensboro, N.C. Booth, who played for the Terrapins from 1994-97, was a third-team All-America selection in 1997 by both the Associated Press and the NABC, helped lead the Terrapins to an 82-44 four-year record and four NCAA Tournament appearances. Booth is still ranked 9th on the Maryland career scoring list with 1,776 points, sixth in rebounds and sixth in steals. He earned fi rst-team All-ACC accolades in 1997 and third-team honors in 1995 and was a second-team All-ACC Tournament pick in 1997. A fi rst-round draft pick by the Chicago Bulls in the 1997 NBA Draft, he played for the Bulls in 1998 when they captured the NBA World Championship. He rejoined Maryland as an assistant for Head Coach Gary Williams for the 2004-05 season. Former Terps Coach Bud Millikan Dies Bud Millikan, who coached men s basketball at the University of Maryland from 1950 to 1967, died recently at the age of 89. Millikan coached for 17 seasons at Maryland and compiled a 243-182 (.572) record. The Terrapins reached the NCAA Elite Eight and won the Atlantic Coast Conference title in the 1957-58 season. That Terrapin team went 22-7 and fi nished sixth in the nation in the fi nal rankings. Current head coach Gary Williams played as a point guard for Millikan s Maryland varsity team from the 1964-65 season through 1966-67. Williams said Millikan s coaching style gave a number of his players the inspiration they needed to become successful coaches in their own right. He was my coach for all four years, said Williams, who noted that Millikan also played and learned under legendary Hall of Fame coach Dr. Henry Iba. I think his strength was he was a very strict fundamentals coach. That was an important part of a number of us becoming head coaches. Williams noted that players like Billy Jones (UMBC), Joe Harrington (Hofstra, George Mason, Long Beach State, Colorado), Terry Truax (Towson) and Billy Franklin (Bowie HS) were all head-coaching products of Millikan s program. To have that many coaches come off one team shows that if you listened, you picked up a lot of good things, said Williams. He was a tough coach and if you wanted to play, you did things his way. He was a great person. Millikan, who also was the coach when Billy Jones became the fi rst African-American player to play basketball in the ACC, was inducted to the University of Maryland Athletics Hall of Fame in 1988. GaryWILLIAMS 648-365 (32nd Season) / 441-237 (21st Season) at Md Since returning to the College Park campus in 1989, Gary Williams (Maryland 68) has led his alma mater s basketball program from a period of troubled times to an era of national prominence. With 14 NCAA Tournament berths in the last 17 seasons, seven Sweet Sixteen appearances, a pair of consecutive Final Four showings, and the 2002 National Championship - the fi rst of its kind in Maryland basketball history - Williams and his staff have literally forged what is now more than a decade of dominance in college basketball s most storied and competitive conference. AFTER LEADING THE TERRAPINS TO THE ATLANTIC COAST CONFERENCE REGULAR- SEASON TITLE IN 2010, WILLIAMS WAS VOTED THE LEAGUE S COACH OF THE YEAR BY THE ATLANTIC COAST SPORTS MEDIA ASSOCIATION. IT WAS HIS SECOND SUCH AWARD, AS HE WAS ALSO HONORED IN 2002. Now, with 441 victories as Maryland s head coach, Williams stands as the Terrapins all-time winningest head basketball coach. He passed Charles Lefty Driesell, who amassed 348 victories in 18 seasons from 1969 to 1986. The Terrapins have averaged 22.6 wins per year since the 1994-95 season. With 648 career victories in 32 seasons overall, Williams is the 5th-winningest active head coach in NCAA Division I men s basketball. The rise of the Maryland program has run parallel with Williams ascent among the most notable in the collegiate coaching fraternity. Williams was one of only fi ve coaches to boast a string of 11 consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament from 1994-2004. He has produced at least 20 wins in 12 of his last 15 seasons, and in a school-record eight straight from 1996-97 to 2003-04. With 18 career 20-win seasons, Williams is 7th among active coaches. In June of 2005, Williams received the University of Maryland s highest alumni honor as he, Connie Chung, Renaldo Nehemiah and others were inducted into the University of Maryland s Alumni Hall of Fame. Williams was inducted into the University of Maryland s Sports Hall of Fame in 1999. In January of 2005, Williams was named one of Washingtonian Magazine s Washingtonians of the Year. He joined others such as Washington D.C. mayor Anthony Williams and Tim Russert of NBC s Meet The Press on the prestigious list. In September of 2004, Williams joined Washington Redskins great Darrell Green and Washington Sports and Entertainment Chairman and CEO Abe Pollin as the inaugural inductees into the new Greater Washington Sports Hall of Champions. Williams was one of only fi ve coaches in NCAA Division I to have led his team to 11 consecutive NCAA Tournaments, from 1994-2004. The Terrapins 2010 appearance in the NCAA Tournament marks the 17th consecutive postseason berth for Williams teams. In guiding his 2004 Terrapins to the ACC Tournament title, Williams became the third coach in league history to lead his team to victory over the top three seeds: No. 3 Wake Forest, No. 2 NC State and No. 1 Duke. By overcoming a 21-point first half deficit against the Wolfpack, Williams engineered the greatest comeback in the 52-year history of the ACC Tournament. He is one of seven college basketball coaches since 1980 to guide his alma mater to the Final Four and was the fi rst since 1974 to lead his alma mater to a national title. A winner of nearly 70 percent of his NCAA Tournament games while at Maryland, he ranks ninth among active coaches in NCAA Tournament winning percentage overall (28-15,.651), and eighth in wins (28). With his 500th win at NC State on March 2, 2003, the 1968 Maryland grad became the sixth ACC alumnus in conference history to amass as many as 500 coaching victories. With a victory over No. 1 North Carolina in Chapel Hill on Jan. 19, 2008, he is the winningest coach in the nation against top-ranked opponents (7). With 441 wins as Maryland s head coach, Williams is only the sixth mentor in Atlantic Coast Conference history to pass the 300-victory milestone. With 185 career regular-season ACC victories as Maryland s coach, Williams ranks as the thirdwinningest ACC coach in terms of conference victories. Only Dean Smith (364, North Carolina) and Mike Krzyzewski (274, Duke) have more ACC wins. Williams coached the 1,000th game of his 32- year career on 1/23/2010 at home against NC State. Williams was heralded as the national and Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year during the Terps 2002 championship run. He is one of just 11 active coaches in America to boast a national title and one of only three in the conference. He has become the third-winningest coach in ACC history after transforming the Maryland program into one of the nation s most formidable, and building a Baltimore-D.C. area following that has consistently resulted in packed arenas. After demolishing attendance records with sellout crowds during the fi nal years of Maryland basketball at Cole Field House, Williams Terps have fi nished in the top 10 nationally in each of the last nine seasons. The Terrapins played before 341,050 fans in 2007-08, averaging 100 percent of capacity for the second time in Comcast Center history. Williams is one of just two 600-win coaches who now engineer the programs at their respective alma maters, joining Jim Boeheim at Syracuse.
