Black Hawk Lodge HAWK TALES Mississippi Valley Council Issue 1 Nov 2017 A Message from Our Chief Brothers, I would like to start off by saying that I am absolutely honored, humbled, and excited for the chance to serve you this year. I won t let you down! The new lodge year is off to a fast start! In the past two months, new officers were elected, committee chairmen were chosen, and the LEC was trained. Since Fall Reunion, Black Hawk Lodge has already begun to put things in motion for an amazing 2017-2018. We attended the annual Section C-3B Section Conclave and I am proud to say that our very own Jack Gunsten was elected as the new Section Chief! Fall Reunion was a complete success thanks to the hard work by the past LEC! Specifically, I would like to thank our Past Chief Jack Gunsten for setting the lodge up to succeed for many years to come! I want to say thank you to our amazing cooks, ceremonies team, and inductions team for a job well done as always! We couldn t do it without them! I want to congratulate those who sealed their membership in our Order by completing their brotherhood. I also would like to congratulate our newly made brothers who completed their Ordeal and I want to welcome all of you into the Brotherhood of Cheerful Service! Winter Banquet is coming up on December 9 th at Madison Park Church in Quincy, Illinois. We are going to make our banquet more fun for everyone this year and the LEC is confident that we will do just that! This event wraps up one year and gets us ready for the next! Be sure that you all make it to Winter Banquet! Check out the article later in the newsletter for more information! 2018 is the 15 th anniversary of Black Hawk Lodge! To celebrate this occasion the LEC has decided to have a special 15 th Anniversary Fellowship Event which will feature many exciting activities and give attendees a chance to have an absolute blast with their fellow arrowmen! The LEC is excited to put on this event for you to enjoy! Mark your calendars for June 16 th, 2018. That is the Saturday between the 1 st and 2 nd weeks of summer camp at SSR. Be looking for more information to come! Don t miss out on this rare opportunity! As I said in my speech at Fall Reunion, My goal for this year is to make Black Hawk Lodge, Order of the Arrow, the most influential program that this council offers its Scouts in the coming year. I truly believe that we are building something special here and I hope that you all take the opportunities that our Order provides you and run with them! Lodge Adviser Minute Hello Fellow Arrowmen; It is hard to believe that an entire year has passed since I first became the OA Adviser. Some fun things have been happening. I am particularly proud of our new program, Order of the Arrow Service Corp. This year 6 arrowmen used their 2 nd week of Summer Camp to come to Saukenauk Scout Reservation and provided service to camp and enjoyed the ties of brotherhood. We are hoping to have 2 weeks of OASC this year; week 2 of Saukenauk and week 2 of Camp Eastman. Be looking for the applications on the Black Hawk Web page and the council web site. We also launched a new service program. Service Lodge Flaps will be awarded at the Winter Banquet to those that have earned them. Black Hawk Lodge has provided over 7000 hours of service so far this year. If you are wondering there is still time to earn a flap. So much happened this year it is hard to believe that next year has even more in store. 2018 is Black Hawk Lodges 15 th anniversary and new lodge Chief, Isaiah Aden, has some great things planned for us. I would like to thank Jack Gunsten for his 2 years as lodge Chief and all that he has done for us as a lodge. He has helped move our Lodge forward and upward. Personally, I would like to thank him for making my first year on the job fulfilling and enjoyable. He has put me on the right path. I would like to congratulate him on being elected our Section Chief for 2018. I know he will do Mississippi Valley Council and Black Hawk Lodge proud. Most of all I am looking forward to working with the new LEC and Chief Isaiah Aden. We have already gotten off to a great start. Isaiah has some wonderful ideas and is already moving forward. Make sure to attend the Winter Banquet to get your service flap and see what Chief Isaiah and the LEC have in store for us. Garrett Lanning River Valley Chapter Chief Evan Youngquist Shoquoquon Hi, my name is Evan Youngquist and I am a life scout from troop 40 in Burlington, Iowa. I am glad to be the Shoquoquon Chapter Chief for the 2017-2018 year because I have the opportunity to serve Black Hawk Lodge. My goals are to get all elections done before summer camp, perform crossovers, and get younger arrowmen involved. I think if youth get involved and see what it takes to be on one of the committee's then they will be more likely to run for a position. Finally, If you are in the Shoquoquon area and want to help with either elections or crossover send me an email at youngquiste52@gmail.com or text me at 319-759-6971 Evan Youngquist Shoquoquon Chapter Chief Fall Reunion Recap At the 2017 Fall Reunion, Saukenauk was the place to be! From multiple service projects that gave our camp a face lift, to playing quittage in the water barrel area, we mixed our work and play in a positive way. All that attended can agree that it was a warm weekend to say the least, but we continued on with cheerful service to the camp and our lodge. Ceremonies were outstanding, and continue to improve with each outing. It is safe to say that the meals were amazing as well! Thank you to everyone that helped put on this event. It doesn t matter if you were on the ceremonies or inductions teams, or if you volunteered your time in the kitchen. We have given scouts an experience that is truly unique and will stick with all candidates throughout their scouting career. If you are interested in helping with our Fall Reunion, Spring Conclave, and other events, please do not hesitate to contact us at blackhawklodge@gmail.com
