GWU's 34-20 home win over Liberty on Oct. 10, 2015 was its first home victory against the Flames since 2005, snapping Liberty's fourgame winning streak in Boiling Springs. Gardner-Webb is the second most common 2 opponent in Liberty football history, as Saturday will mark the teams' 24th gridiron meeting. (The Flames will face Charleston Southern for the 25th time next month). The first Liberty-GWU matchup came in 1976, the Flames' fourth football season. The two teams will be meeting for the 18th consecutive season on Saturday. Gardner-Webb has faced a challenging schedule, including three teams which appear in the 3 current FCS Top 25 (North Carolina A&T, Wofford and Western Carolina), FBS foe Wyoming and Big South-leading Kennesaw State. Liberty has held GWU without a touchdown in three of its last five visits to Boiling Springs (2007, 2011 & 2013). At 1-6, Gardner-Webb is assured of a fourth consecutive losing season for the first time 4 in program history. The Runnin' Bulldogs' last winning season was a 7-5 campaign in 2013. Liberty entered 2017 with 11 consecutive winning seasons. However, the Flames have to win three of their last four games to keep that streak alive. LAST MEETING WITH GARDNER-WEBB OCT. 29, 2016 LIBERTY 23, GARDNER-WEBB 20 (OT) LYNCHBURG, VA. (WILLIAMS STADIUM) Liberty LB Dexter Robbins blocked Paul Schumacher s 36- yard field goal try in overtime, securing the Flames 23-20 victory. Flames K Alex Probert missed a 39-yard field goal at the end of regulation, but hit a 34-yard attempt in OT which proved to be the game winner. Defense ruled the day, as the two teams combined for just 556 offensive yards, and Gardner-Webb returned an interception for a TD. Liberty QB Stephen Calvert was 14-of-23 passing for 182 yards and a TD, improving to 4-0 as a starting QB. A Liberty Win Would... Snap the Flames' four-game losing streak, enabling Liberty to avoid its first five-game losing skid since dropping five straight contests between 2011 and 2012, including the first four games of Turner Gill's tenure at Liberty. Halt the Flames' three-game Big South losing streak, enabling Liberty to avoid its first four-game Big South losing skid since six straight conference setbacks between 2005 and 2006. Avoid the Flames' second 0-3 Big South start in program history (also 2005). Boost the Flames' all-time record against Gardner-Webb to 14-9-1, including 6-5-1 in Boiling Springs, N.C. Mark the Flames' fifth win in their last six visits to GWU. Represent the first win by a road team in the Liberty-Gardner-Webb series since Oct. 26, 2013, when the Flames posted a 24-0 shutout win in Boiling Springs, N.C. 2017 UNIFORM TRACKER The Liberty football program is outfitted by Nike and has 27 different helmet/jersey/pants combinations to choose from during the 2017 season. MILESTONE WATCH 2: WR B.J. Farrow needs two TD receptions to become the fourth Flame and the first since Darrin Peterson in 2014 with 10+ TD catches in a season. Eight of Farrow's 25 receptions in 2017 have gone for TDs. 4: QB Stephen Calvert has thrown for 21 TD passes this season. He needs four more TDs to break the Liberty single-season record of 24, co-held by Phil Basso (1984) and Robby Justino (1990). Calvert has passed for 4+ TDs three times this season. today's game at a glance SERIES HISTORY Liberty is 13-9-1 all-time against Gardner-Webb in a series which began on Oct. 2, 1976, during the Flames' fourth football season. Gardner-Webb is the second most common opponent in Flames history, trailing only Charleston Southern (24 meetings). Liberty and GWU will be meeting for the 18th consecutive season on Saturday, as the Flames and Runnin' Bulldogs were both charter members of Big South Conference football in 2002. FINAL BIG SOUTH GO-AROUND Saturday's contest is part of Liberty's 16th and final go-around through Big South Conference play. The Flames were a charter member of Big South football in 2002 and have gone 53-22 all-time in conference play. Liberty has won eight Big South titles in the last 10 years, including 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016. However, the Flames are ineligible for the 2017 title due to their transition to FBS football. The following are Liberty's all-time records against Big South foes in conference matchups: LIBERTY FOOTBALL BY THE NUMBERS 5: Liberty has defeated five FBS opponents all-time, including Eastern Michigan (1989), Ball State (2010), Appalachian State (2014), Georgia State (2015) and Baylor (2017). 5: Five current Flames have graduated with bachelor s degrees and are currently enrolled in graduate programs, including Dia Vante Brown, Michael Henderman, Solomon McGinty, Trey Turner and Hunter Winstead. 6: Turner Gill is in his sixth season as Liberty s head coach. 7: Seven Flames have been selected in the NFL Draft. Most recently, Walt Aikens was taken by the Miami Dolphins in the fourth round of the 2014 Draft. 8: Turner Gill is Liberty's eighth head coach in program history. 8: Liberty has won eight Big South Conference titles (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016). 9: Nine Flames have been named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans. 10: Liberty won a program-record 10 games in 2008, finishing at 10-2. 11: The Flames have recorded 11 consecutive winning seasons, entering 2017. 14: Liberty has played 14 overtime games, going 6-8 in extra time. 16: The Flames have won seven or more games 16 times in program history. 18: Liberty owns 18 wins over nationally ranked FCS teams, highlighted by a 15-14 victory over No. 1 Coastal Carolina on Nov. 22, 2014. 45: The 2017 campaign is Liberty s 45th football season. 76: Liberty has recorded 76 victories during the last 10 seasons (2007-16), which is tied for 18th most of any FCS program over that span. 20,000: The seating capacity of Williams Stadium was expanded to 20,000 for the 2017 season. The Flames have welcomed 20,000+ fans to Williams Stadium on five occasions, including a stadiumrecord 22,551 for a Sept. 19, 2015 victory over Montana. The Flames are 5-5-1 all-time in Boiling Springs. Liberty had won four consecutive games at Spangler Stadium before suffering a 34-20 defeat on Oct. 10, 2015. Liberty is 9-1 in its last 10 matchups with Gardner-Webb overall, dating back to a 31-0 road win on Nov. 17, 2007 which wrapped up the Flames' first-ever Big South football title. The two teams played their first overtime contest against one another last season at Williams Stadium (Oct. 29, 2016). Dexter Robbins' blocked field goal sealed the Flames' 23-20 overtime victory. LIBERTY IN THE TAR HEEL STATE Liberty is in the midst of its 45th season of football, and Saturday's game will mark the Flames' 45th contest in North Carolina. The Flames are 13-29-2 all-time when playing in the Tar Heel State, with their most recent victory coming in a 55-48 overtime contest at Appalachian State on Oct. 11, 2014. Liberty has faced 12 different opponents in North Carolina all-time. Liberty's roster also features four players from the greater Charlotte area: S Corbin Jackson (Charlotte) DL Seth Nerness (Huntersville) OL Nate Pena (Mooresville) QB Rudiger Yearick (Matthews) FAMILIAR FOES Turner Gill has faced Gardner-Webb six times as a head coach, including once at Buffalo (2009) and five times at Liberty (2012-16). Meanwhile, Gardner-Webb Head Coach Carroll Mc- Cray has squared off against Liberty six times, including twice as a GWU player (1980-81) and four times as head coach (2013-16). McCray's record against the Flames is 2-4, including 1-1 as a player and 1-3 on the sidelines. TWO OF THE BIG SOUTH'S BEST QBS Liberty sophomore QB Stephen Calvert leads the Big South in nearly every passing category this season, including completions, passing yards, touchdowns and passing efficiency. Calvert threw for 182 yards in his only previous start against Gardner-Webb, leading the Flames to a 23-20 OT victory in 2016. Gardner-Webb senior QB Tyrell Maxwell is the reigning Big South Offensive Player of the Year. His 612 rushing yards pace all Big South players in 2017. The 2017 season will also serve as Liberty s 16th and final season as a member of the Big South Conference. Liberty was one of four charter members in the Big South when the league started to sponsor football in 2002 (along with Charleston Southern, Elon and Gardner-Webb). During his previous five seasons at Liberty, Flames Head Coach Turner Gill has led the Flames to a Big South title four times (2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016) and its first-ever NCAA FCS Playoff appearance in 2014 (advancing to the second round). Liberty has lost four games in a row, tying the program s longest losing streak under head coach Turner Gill (Liberty dropped its first four games under Gill in 2012). Liberty enters the Gardner-Webb game looking to avoid its longest losing streak in the same season since losing the last 10 games of the 2005 season. Offense 5 In its three wins this season, Liberty amassed 500 or more total offensive yards and averaged 536.0 total offensive yards per game and 6.4 yards per offensive play (Baylor 585 yards; Morehead State 523 yards; Indiana State 500 yards). During its current four-game losing streak, Liberty has failed to amass 400 yards of total offense in three out of four games, averaging 380.0 total offensive yards per game (Jacksonville State 316 yards; St. Francis (Pa.) 338 yards; Kennesaw State 337 yards; Monmouth 529 yards). The Flames offense followed a similar pattern in its first two Big South games of the year, scoring on the game s opening drive in both games and used a scoring burst late in the game to attempt a rally. The Flames showcased their quick strike offense during the second half of the game against Kennesaw State, scoring three touchdowns in a six-minute span against the Owls to narrow a 28-point deficit to one score midway through the fourth quarter. Liberty scored 20 unanswered points during the last 5:59 of the third quarter, with all three scores coming on Stephen Calvert TD passes, narrowing its deficit to the Hawks to 10 points before entering the fourth quarter. During its first two Big South games of the year, Liberty rushed for 56 yards on the game s opening drive against Kennesaw State and 61 yards against Monmouth. The Flames finished the Kennesaw State game with 103 total rushing yards and the Monmouth contest with 121 total rushing yards. Following the Monmouth game, Liberty ranks last in the Big South in rushing offense (118.4 yards per game) Liberty s offense continues to be powered by its passing games as the Flames 328.4 passing yards per game accounts for 73.5 percent of the team s total offense this season (Liberty would rank No. 9 in the country in passing offense, if the Flames were eligible for the NCAA FCS national rankings) Liberty continues to remain highly efficient in the red zone this season and would rank No. 12 in the country if it was eligible for the NCAA FCS national rankings (91.3 percent/21-of-23; 13 TDs [7 rushing; 6 passing]/8 FGs). Monmouth won the time of possession battle against Liberty (33:28 to 26:32), marking the fifth time in seven games Liberty has been edged in time of possession. The Flames currently rank last in the Big South in average time of possession per game (27:59). Defense Following its best defensive performance of the season against St. Francis (Pa.) [275 yards and 13 points], Liberty surrendered 42 points and 507 total offensive yards to Kennesaw St. and 56 points and 608 total offensive yards to Monmouth. Monmouth was the fourth team this year to finish with 500 or more total offensive yards against the Flames (Baylor 532; Indiana State 543; Kennesaw State 507; Monmouth 608). During the Flames first five seasons under head coach Turner Gill, Liberty allowed six opponents to finish with 500 or more total offensive yards (48 games over five seasons). Following the 56-39 loss to Monmouth, Liberty ranks last in the Big South in scoring defense (35.0 points allowed per game) and total defense (450.0 yards allowed per game). During its first two Big South games, Liberty has allowed 862 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns, with opponents averaging 7.2 yards per carry (Kennesaw St. 498 yards, 77 carries, 5 TDs; Monmouth 364 yards, 43 carries, 5 TDs). Liberty has ranked in the Top 40 in the country in rushing defense three out of five seasons under Flames Head Coach Turner Gill (national ranking/average yards allowed): 2012 (No. 24/126.1), 2013 (No. 31/135.3), 2014 (No. 78/183.7), 2015 (No. 38/146.7) and 2016 (No. 106/219.5). Liberty s defense continues to have success on third-down plays this year, ranking second in the Big South in third-down conversion defense (32.3; 32-of-99). Liberty was able to limit Monmouth to converting on only 2-of-10 third-down plays (Liberty would rank No. 25 in the country in third-down conversion defense if the Flames were eligible for the NCAA FCS national rankings). Special Teams Liberty s entire special teams units received postseason honors and all four return to their positions heading into the 2017 season: K Alex Probert (All-Big South first team/hero Sports Freshman All-America HM), P Trey Turner (All-Big South first), LS Hunter Winstead (All-Big South first team/ STATS FCS All-America third team), KR Frankie Hickson (All- Big South second team). Liberty has blocked a potential game-winning or tying field goal on the game s final play in three of the last four seasons (2014 vs. No. 1 Coastal Carolina; 2016 vs. Gardner-Webb in overtime; 2017 vs. Indiana State). Monmouth s Pete Guerriero opened the game with a 95- yard kickoff return for a touchdown, marking the first time the Flames have allowed a kickoff return for a touchdown since the Charleston Southern s Gerald Stevenson returned a kickoff 100 yards for a score against Liberty on Oct. 9, 2010.

Liberty 48, Baylor 45 (sept. 2, 2017) WHAT HAPPENED The beginning of Liberty's two-year FBS transition process started off with an offensive shootout. At the end it was the Flames standing as the victor, 48-45, over Baylor, Sept. 2, at McLane Stadium. On Feb. 16, the NCAA approved Liberty's waiver request to begin the twoyear FBS reclassification process. The Baylor game marked Liberty's final matchup against an FBS team as a FCS program. The Flames recorded their fifth win over an FBS program in school history with their victory. Three of the Flames' five wins over FBS programs have come under the leadership of sixth-year head coach Turner Gill. The Flames also defeated Appalachian State in 2014 and Georgia State in 2015. Liberty's first win over a FBS program came against Eastern Michigan in 1989, followed by a win over Ball State in 2010. With the win, the Flames move their record to 1-0 on the season, while Baylor opens the season at 0-1 under first-year head coach Matt Rhule. The game saw the two teams combined for 1,117 total offensive yards (Liberty 585; Baylor 532), with 725 of those yards coming through the air. HOW IT HAPPENED Liberty's offense controlled the game, as the Flames ran 103 plays for 585 total yards. The Flames went 15-of-24 on third down, giving Liberty more than 16 minutes of advantage in time of possession (38:16-21:44). Liberty committed zero turnovers, while coming up with two big interceptions. Chris Turner returned a pick 32 yards for a third-quarter TD, and Brandon Tillmon collected his first career INT on the game's final play. The Flames' defense also held Baylor to 41 yards and zero points during the first quarter, helping post Liberty to an early lead. In a game which featured three ties and four lead changes, Liberty took the lead for good at 34-31 on a 13-yard pass from Stephen Calvert to Antonio Gandy-Golden with 24 seconds remaining in the third quarter. HISTORY MAKERS The win marked the first-ever victory over a Power Five opponent in Liberty and Big South Conference football history. Liberty entered the game as a 34-point underdog and with only a 2.2 percent chance to win according to ESPN's Football Power Index (FPI). The game was ranked the 7th-biggest upset in college football over the last 25 years, in a Sept. 6 article on ESPN.com. The Flames joined Lamar (1981) as the only FCS teams ever to defeat Baylor. In their final season as FCS members, the Flames recorded their first season-opening victory away from Lynchburg since 1988, their inaugural season as an FCS (then 1-AA) program. WHAT THEY SAID Liberty Head Coach Turner Gill "I think Liberty's brand name just went out pretty strong across the country. Again, not just for football, but really for the whole school.... Now people are going to know about Liberty University." Baylor Head Coach Matt Rhule "Just an unbelievable offensive performance and Gandy-Golden, 13 catches for 192 yards, pretty much all of them with someone draped on him. I thought he took over the game and Mosley, the tailback, with 122 yards really when it mattered. And Stephen Calvert, he did a tremendous job at the quarterback position for them." 6 BUCKSHOT'S BIG NIGHT Making just his eighth career start, sophomore QB Stephen "Buckshot" Calvert rewrote the record books in Waco. Calvert's 447 passing yards broke the program record of 441, set in 1984 by Phil Basso against Carson-Newman. Calvert also set program records for attempts (60) and completions (44), while throwing three TD passes and zero interceptions and recording his first career rushing TD. NOTEWORTHY Alex Probert tied a Liberty single-game record with four field goals, equaling the mark most recently set by Matt Bevins on Nov. 20, 2010. He was 4-of-4 on the night and scored a total of 16 points. Antonio Gandy-Golden set career highs for receptions (13), receiving yards (192) and touchdowns (2). His 192 receiving yards rank No. 5 in program history and were the most by a Flame since Chris Summers' program-record 240 yards against Stony Brook on Nov. 19, 2011. Gandy-Golden and Damian King (10 receptions) are the first Liberty duo to record 10+ catches in a single game since Josh Stofle and Daniel Jackson at South Florida on Oct. 27, 2001. Carrington Mosley carried the ball a career-high 28 times for 122 yards. Liberty had a 300-yard passer (Calvert), a 100-yard rusher (Mosley) and a 100-yard receiver (Gandy-Golden) in the same game for the first time since Oct. 11, 2014 at Appalachian State, when Josh Woodrum (passing), D.J. Abnar (rushing) and Dante' Shells (receiving) achieved the feat. Liberty's 103 offensive plays were the most the Flames have run in a single game since totaling 104 plays at South Florida on Oct. 27, 2001. Jeremy Peters paced the defensive effort with a career-high seven tackles and two pass breakups. Chris Turner's eighth career interception was the first one he has returned for a touchdown.

It is just one off of the school single-game record and the most by a Flame since Biff Parson's five TD passes against Wingate in 2000. 44 Completions Calvert completed a Liberty and Big South-record 44 passes during a season-opening victory at Baylor on Sept. 2. He shattered the previous Liberty mark of 34 completions, set twice by Josh Woodrum (2012 and 2015). 60 Attempts Calvert's career-high 60 pass attempts at Baylor on Sept. 2 were another school record, eclipsing the previous standard of 57. Phil Basso was the most recent Flame to throw 57 passes, doing so against Central State in 1983. 447 Passing Yards Calvert's third program record at Baylor on Sept. 2 came courtesy of his 447 passing yards. Liberty is the only NCAA Division I school (FCS or FBS) to sweep a conference's preseason special teams honors this season. Winstead (second team) and Probert (third team) were also named to the STATS FCS Preseason All-America Team. HUMAN HIGHLIGHT REEL Chris Turner Trey Turner Flames redshirt junior cornerback Chris Turner posted the No. 2 play on SportsCenter's Top 10 Plays on Aug. 12, thanks to a one-handed interception during a scrimmage. The play marked Turner's second career Top 10 appearance. He also made the cut on Nov. 19, 2015, following an acrobatic interception which helped seal a 24-21 win over No. 4/4 Coastal Carolina. Turner is the Flames' active leader with eight career interceptions, including a pick-six at Baylor. The Florida native's 46 receptions in 2017 are nearly double his total from his first two seasons (24). Gandy-Golden racked up 192 receiving yards at Baylor, ranking No. 5 for a single game in program history. He then backed up that performance with a 171-yard outburst two weeks later against Indiana State. Eight of Farrow's 25 receptions this season have gone for touchdowns, including a program record-tying three scores against Morehead State. QUARTERBACKS, BEWARE! A charter member of the Big South Conference for football in 2002, Liberty has gone 53-22 (.707) all-time in Big South games. The Flames lead all conference teams with eight Big South Conference titles (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016). Todd Macon Frankie Hickson Carrington Mosley The Flames return three running backs who combined for 1,733 rushing yards, 16 rushing TDs and five 100-yard games in 2016. Carrington Mosley rushed for a team-high 663 yards last season, Todd Macon paced the team with seven rushing touchdowns and Frankie Hickson owned the top yards per carry average at 4.8.
