CASSIDY LICHTMAN FILE: Senior setter/hitter Cassidy Lichtman proved last season that she is truly a jack of all trades. She led the team with 22 double-doubles, including 10 triple doubles in 2009. This season, she has registered a double-double or better in four of the team s first five matches. She is fifth among active Pac-10 players in assists (1601), sixth in digs (800) and seventh in aces (55). Furthermore, she is the only returning 2009 AVCA First Team All-American in the conference. The senior class, along with redshirt junior Stephanie Browne, has amassed an 91-15 record through three seasons. The group has claimed three consecutive Pac-10 titles and twice played in the national championship match. FAB FRESHMEN: Stanford s five freshmen were tabbed the third-best recruiting class in the nation by PrepVolleyball.com. The group boasts two of the top-5 recruits in the country - No. 3 Rachel Williams and No. 4 Carly Wopat. Additionally, Sam Wopat comes in ranked No. 40 and Lydia Bai at No. 43. Rounding out the talented class is Mary Ellen Luck from Houston, Texas. NATIONAL POLL: Stanford moved up again this week in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll to No. 2 after going 2-0 at the Stanford Invitational. The Cardinal has started the season among the top five teams in the nation eight of the last nine years. Defending national champion Penn State remained in the top spot in the poll, while Illinois, Florida and Texas round out the top-5. Seven Pac-10 squads are ranked in the top-25, including four in the top-10. PICKED TO WIN: The Stanford women s volleyball team was chosen by the league s coaches to win the 2010 Pac-10 crown. Stanford totaled 77 points in the preseason poll and captured six first-place votes. Washington finished second with 72 points and two first-place votes, while USC was third with 70 points and the final two first-place votes. The Pac-10 sent a record-tying eight teams to the postseason in 2009. The conference has taken home five of the last nine NCAA titles. The coaches have correctly picked the Pac-10 champion in 13 of the previous 21 polls. 2009 IN REVIEW: In 2009, Stanford posted a 23-8 record and won an unprecedented 13th Pac-10 title. The team finished the year with a postseason run to its fourth straight NCAA Regional appearance. On the year, Stanford bested 10 ranked opponents and won 12 matches by 3-0 margins. Four players - Gabi Ailes, Alix Klineman, Cassidy Lichtman and Janet Okogbaa - were named All-Americans. TAKING ON THE BEST: Once again, Head Coach John Dunning has lined up one of the most challenging schedules in the nation for the Cardinal. Stanford is scheduled to play 15 regular-season matches against teams ranked in the preseason poll, and 19 against teams that made the 2009 NCAA Tournament. This weekend s matches will be the first against ranked opponents for Stanford this season. HEAD COACH JOHN DUNNING: Beginning his 10th season at the helm of the Cardinal program, head coach John Dunning is one of the most accomplished coaches in the collegiate volleyball world. Dunning has four national championships under his belt, has taken his teams to nine Final Fours and carried six of his nine teams at Stanford to the national championship match. MILESTONE FOR DUNNING: In the 2010 season opener against Tulane, head coach John Dunning picked up his 700th career win. In his 26th year as a head coach, Dunning is 704-147 (.827), giving him a winning percentage that ranks among the top five all-time for Division I coaches. Dunning is 267-45 at Stanford, leading all active coaches in the conference by winning percentage (.856). SCOUTING TEXAS: The Longhorns have opened the 2010 season with a 5-1 record for head coach Jerritt Elliott. Last week, Texas 3-2 win over No. 23 Long Beach State was the 1,000th victory in program history, while its 3-0 loss to then No. 5 Illinois snapped its 25-match home win streak. The Longhorns are led by two upperclassmen - senior Juliann Faucette and junior Rachael Adams - and rookie setter Hannah Allison. Faucette, an outside hitter, leads the team with 3.50 kills per set and 86.5 points. Adams is hitting.439 and averaging 1.00 blocks per set at middle blocker, while Allison is controlling the offense with 10.40 assists per set. THE SERIES WITH THE LONGHORNS: Stanford holds a 17-7 series advantage over Texas all-time. The last meeting between the two squads came in the 2008 Final Four and was an instant classic for the Cardinal. Down 0-2 to the Longhorns, Stanford used a five-set comeback win to propel itself to its third straight NCAA title match. In fact, Stanford is a perfect 5-0 against Texas under head coach John Dunning. The last Texas victory came on Sept. 3, 1999, a four-set win for the Longhorns in Austin, Texas. --2010 Stanford Volleyball--
