The Senior Bowl will be held on Saturday, January 29, 2019 in Mobile, Alabama. The OVC players on the preseason list were Jacksonville State offensive lineman B.J. Autry, Murray State quarterback Drew Anderson and JSU defensive lineman Denzil Ware. League Shifts From Offense to Defense: At the end of the season (2017), three OVC teams ranked in the top seven nationally in total defense: Jacksonville State (2nd), UT Martin (6th) and Tennessee State (7th). In the past fi ve years there have never been more than two OVC teams rank in the Top 25 in total defense at the end of the season. On the fl ip side, only one team (Austin Peay) fi nished in the Top 50 nationally in total offense (49th). Sgt. York Trophy Presented by Delta Dental of Tennessee Enters 12th Season: This year marks the 12th of the Sgt. York Trophy presented by Delta Dental of Tennessee. The trophy (founded in 2007 by the Nashville Sports Council and OVC) goes to the winner of the quadrangular season football series between the four OVC football-playing schools located in the state of Tennessee (Austin Peay, Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech and UT Martin). The award is only the second traveling trophy that involves more than two teams in college sports; the other is the Commander in Chief s Trophy which has been contested between Air Force, Army and Navy annually since 1972. The award is named in honor of Alvin C. York, the most noted Soldier of World War I. As a corporal in the 2nd battalion, 328th Infantry, in the Battle of the Meuse River- Argonne (Oct. 8, 1918), York and seven other soldiers captured 132 prisoners, was promoted to sergeant and received the Distinguished Service Cross, the French Croix de Guerre, the French Legion of Honor, the Croce di Guerra of Italy and the War Medal of Montenegro. Upon his return to the United States in 1919, he was bestowed the Congressional Medal of Honor. The trophy goes to the team with the best record against the other schools (in case of a tie there will be co-champions and the actual trophy will be retained by the defending champion if they are involved in the tie or if the defending champion is not involved in the tie it will go to the institution that has gone the most seasons without winning the trophy). NCAA Division I Playoff Information: This season marks the sixth of an expanded 24-team fi eld for the NCAA Division I Football Championship; in 2010 the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) playoff fi eld expanded to 20 teams, up from 16 previously, and in 2013 the fi eld increased to 24 for the fi rst time. The expansion in 2010 to 20 teams was the fi rst since the fi eld grew from 12 to 16 teams in 1997. The 24-team fi eld is comprised of 10 automatic bids and 14 at-large berths. There are eight fi rst round matchups (16 total teams), while eight (8) teams receive a bye into the second round. For the ninth time in 2018, the championship game will be played in Frisco, Texas at Toyota Stadium, a 20,500-seat multi-purpose stadium. The Southland Conference serves as the host of the championship, which will be held on Saturday, January 5. Academic Success: During the past academic year (2017-18) there were 103 OVC football student-athletes who were named to the Commissioner s Honor Roll for having a 3.25 grade point average or higher. In addition, 11 student-athletes were awarded the OVC Academic Medal of Honor for achieving perfect 4.0 GPAs. The OVC also awards a Team Academic Award for the football program with the highest percentage of players with a 3.25 grade point average or higher; that award went to Jacksonville State for 2017-18. A Look at the Coaches: There is only one new head coach in the OVC this season as Dewayne Alexander, taking over at his alma mater (Tennessee Tech), after having previously been an assistant coach. He is one of three OVC coaches, joining Jacksonville State s John Grass and Tennessee State s Rod Reed, who are currently coaching at their alma mater. The longest tenured coach in the league is UT Martin s Jason Simpson who enters his 13th season with the Skyhawks in 2018. Simpson has 78 overall victories in his career, seventh-most in OVC history. Week Zero Games: For the second-straight season, Jacksonville State competed in a Week Zero game when they opened the season against nationally-ranked North Carolina A&T on Aug. 25 in the Guardian Credit Union FCS Kickoff at the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery, Alabama. The FCS Kickoff began in 2014 and allows teams to play a game a week ahead of the start of the season if the game is broadcast on national television. Returning players who were fi rst-team All-OVC selections last year (seven in total) were automatic selections to the preseason team this year. The squad also included 16 players who were second-team picks in 2017. Of the 30 total selections, 18 were seniors, seven were juniors and five were sophomores. Instant Replay: For the second-straight year, the OVC will have instant replay for all nonconference and conference home football contests. The league has partnered with DVSport to implement replay which is defi ned by Rule 12 of the NCAA Football Rule Book. I-AA No More: Although some people may still refer to it as I-AA football, the term that represents the level of Division I football in which the Ohio Valley Conference competes has been long retired. Beginning with the 2006 National Championship game, the term Football Championship Subdivision (or FCS) is to be used. Teams who play at the FCS level can offer a maximum of 63 scholarships (Football Bowl Subdivision teams can offer 85) and compete in a 24-team playoff at the end of the season to determine the national champion. YORK TROPHY The 2018 season marks the 12th of competition for the Sergeant York Trophy, an award created by the Nashville Sports Council and the Ohio Valley Conference. The trophy is contested between the four OVC football-playing schools in the state of Tennessee - Austin Peay, Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech and UT Martin - and goes to the team with the best combined record versus those schools in a given year. The 2018 season is the fi fth that the award has been presented by Delta Dental of Tennessee. In the event of a tie, the award will be shared; however, the previous winner will retain the trophy if they are part of the tie. If the tie is between two other institutions, the trophy will go to the institution that has gone the most seasons without winning the trophy. The award is only the second traveling trophy that involves more than two teams in college sports; the other is the Commander in Chief s Trophy which has been contested between Air Force, Army and Navy annually since 1972. The award is named in honor of Alvin C. York, the most noted Soldier of World War I. Upon his return to the United States in 1919, he was bestowed the Congressional Medal of Honor. Following the war York returned his home in Pall Mall, Tenn. where he dedicated his life to improving education and facilitating educational opportunities for children in the state of Tennessee. Austin Peay completed a perfect 3-0 record in 2017 to win its fi rst Sgt. York Trophy. All-Time Sgt. That meeting two years ago was the fi rst between the schools, separated by just two hours, since the 2003 season. SIU has won two in a row in the series, although MSU won the three games before that (with the last win coming in Murray in 2002). In the 2016 matchup, the Salukis rolled up 558 yards of total offense on its way to a 50-17 victory. Daquan Isom had a game-high 104 rushing yards for Southern Illinois while quarterback Josh Straughan passed for 289 yards and four touchdowns. The Racers were led by Mareio McGraw who had 78 rushing yards while Cameron Birse passed for 210 yards and a touchdown. SCOUTING SOUTHERN ILLINOIS: Southern Illinois will play the fi rst of two OVC opponents this season by opening the year with Murray State. The Salukis will host Southeast Missouri in week three. Third-year head coach Nick Hill, who played quarterback for SIU, will look to an experienced quarterback to run the team's spread offense. Fifth-year senior quarterback Sam Straub is on the CFPA FCS Performer of the Year Watch List to begin this season. A year ago he passed for 1,886 yards and 20 touchdowns in eight games before suffering a season-ending injury. Also back is junior running back D.J. Davis who was a HERO Sports Sophomore All-American after accounting for 124.8 all-purpose yards/game, including catching 35 passes out of the backfield. SIU should be strong on the defensive line, which includes Anthony Knighton (39 tackles, 11.0 TFL, 6.5 sacks) and Malik Haynes (22 tackles, 5.5 TFL, 1 sack) and added Michigan State transfer Kyonta Stallworth. SCOUTING MURRAY STATE: A season ago Murray State ranked eighth nationally in turnovers gained (28) and 16th in turnover margin (+0.82/game). That defense had 17 total interceptions, including three by returner Marquez Sanford. Sanford is one of fi ve defensive starters returning this season. The Racers defensive line includes senior Kenny Wooten, a Preseason All-OVC selection, who had 10 sacks and forced two fumbles a year ago. The MSU linebacker group includes Quincy Williams who tallied 57 tackles in 2017. On the fl ip side of the ball, Murray State threw only seven interceptions in 422 passing attempts a year ago. Senior Shuler Bentley (brother of South Carolina quarterback Jake Shuler) played in nine games last year, passing for 1,789 yards and 13 touchdowns. Bentley and the Racers offense was 22-for-24 (91.7%) in the red zone a year ago, a mark that ranked third in the FCS. That offense also returns running back D.J. Penick who had a team-high 431 rushing yards in 2017. Also back is kicker Gabriel Vicente, a Preseason All-OVC selection, who was 14-of-18 on fi eld goal attempts in his fi rst season of football at any level. The longtime rivals have not played since 2014, a run of three-straight years of meetings between the teams. Morehead State, who plays in the OVC in all other sports, is a member of the Pioneer League for football. The two teams played annually until 1995 (the last season for the Eagles playing OVC football) but did not play again until 2008. Overall EKU has won nine in a row and 27 of the last 28 in the series; the lone victory for MSU in that stretch was a 27-17 win in the 1990 season. EKU holds a 28-9-1 advantage in games played in Richmond. In the last meeting, EKU had over 500 yards of total offense and led 46-0 at halftime on its way to a 55-13 victory. In that game Bennie Coney tossed a pair of touchdowns while Dy'Shawn Mobley rushed for 123 yards and a touchdown for the Colonels. Austin Gahafer had 272 rushing yards and one passing and one rushing touchdown for the Eagles. SCOUTING MOREHEAD STATE: Morehead State is coming off back-to-back 4-7 season after fi nishing the 2015 campaign with a 7-4 mark. The Eagles were predicted to fi nish eighth in the Pioneer Football League this season in a vote of league head coaches. Senior wide receiver Jarin Higginbotham was named to the Preseason All-Pioneer League Team after hauling in 48 catches for 974 yards and 10 touchdowns a season ago. The 974 yards were the third-most in MSU single-season history, while his 1,440 career yards is eighth-most in school history entering the year. He will catch passes from senior Lawson Page, who passed for more than 2,500 yards and 20 scores a year ago. SCOUTING EASTERN KENTUCKY: A year ago Eastern Kentucky won three of its fi nal fi ve games and the two games the team lost came by a combined 10 points (including an overtime contest). Third-year head coach Mark Elder hopes to carry that momentum into this season with 14 returning starters coming back for his program. A year ago the Colonel defense registered 26 sacks and returns Preseason All-OVC selection Aaron Patrick, who had 10.0 tackles-for-loss and seven sacks in 2016 before missing most of last season with an injury. A year ago the Eastern Kentucky offensive line allowed just eight sacks in 11 games, a mark that was fi rst in the OVC and fi fth nationally. Four of those starters return this season and will look to block for senior running back LJ Scott who rushed for 294 yards and six touchdowns a year ago. Scott was also one of the top return specialists in the country in 2017, averaging 30.0 yards on 21 total returns, which earned him Preseason All-American honors this season. Who will start under center is still to-be-determined for EKU as fi ve players are competing for the job; one of those players is sophomore Austin Scott who played at least one series in every Colonel game a year ago. 2018 OVC Football Weekly Release - August 27 17

In that game UTC won 38-17 to extend its advantage in the all-time series to 29-10. Overall UTC has won the last three meetings in the series; prior to that Tennessee Tech won three-straight in the series (2002-04). Ladarius Vanlier led Tennessee Tech with 81 rushing yards and a touchdown. SCOUTING TENNESSEE TECH: Tennessee Tech is under the direction of new head coach Dewayne Alexander, who is no stranger to the program. Alexander, who spent seven years as head coach at Cumberland University (2006-12), played at Tennessee Tech, was a graduate assistant (1997-98) for the program, served two stints as an assistant coach (2002 and 2013-15) with the Golden Eagles and was acting head coach from December 2015 through January 2016. The defense includes senior defensive end Tim Collins, a Preseason All-OVC selection who tallied 51 tackles, 5.0 tackles-for-loss and six quarterback hurries in 2017. That defense also welcomes back junior linebacker Josh Poplar who missed all of last season with a medical issue; a now healthy Poplar will look to amass similar stats to 2016 when he had a team-best 105 tackles while also recovering three fumbles. Senior kicker/punter Nick Madonia returns after making 9-of-14 field goals (including a long of 51 yards) while also averaging 40.1 yards/punt. True freshman Bailey Fisher currently holds the top spot in the Tech offensive depth chart; he enrolled at TTU in January after passing for 3,341 yards and 43 touchdowns and rushing for 1,283 yards his senior season of high school. SCOUTING CHATTANOOGA: Chattanooga plays the fi rst of two OVC opponents this season; the Mocs will take on UT Martin in week three. The Mocs begin year number two under head coach Tom Arth, who was the D3 National Coach of the Year in 2016 at John Carroll University. A year ago, Arth led the team to wins in two of the fi nal three games of the season. The team led the SoCon and ranked 25th nationally in total defense (326.4 yards/ game allowed) and were 12th nationally in passing defense (163.2 yards/ game allowed). This year the team has 16 starters back and were picked to finish fifth in the Southern Conference in the coaches poll. Among the team's returning players is senior Isaiah Mack who had 54 tackles, 7.0 tackles-forloss and 1.5 sacks a season ago; he was selected to the Preseason All-SoCon Team this season. Junior Nick Tiano is back at quarterback after missing the fi nal six games of last season due to injury. In the fi ve games he did play, he amassed 873 passing yards and six touchdowns. #22 Austin Peay Governors (0-0, 0-0 OVC) at #3 Georgia Bulldogs (0-0, 0-0 OVC) Saturday, September 1 2:30 p.m. CT Sanford Stadium (92,746) Athens, Ga.
