F E B R U A R Y 2 0 1 8 T H E P R E S E R V E PA G E 5 GOLF ACADEMY NEWS with Moose Brian Moose DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTION MENTAL SCORECARD Now is the perfect time to start thinking about how you are going to improve your game in 2018. Whether you are working on swing changes, fitness, new equipment, or better practice habits. One thing remains a constant for all of us and that is the 6 inches between the ears. That's right-your brain! We can work on the mental side of the game all year long and here is a mental approach that you can start to put into play now. We only have a few rounds left and scores don't matter, except maybe your mental score. The Mental Scorecard is a scorecard designed to get you thinking about your process before the shot and to review your round afterwards. Below is an explanation of how to use the Mental Scorecard for your next round (scorecard on next page). Your goal for any round of golf should NEVER be a good score. Yes, I d like you to believe you can go out there and play well. But the more we focus on the result, the more you focus on something that s uncertain. And when you focus on uncertainty, your brain prepares for potential threats by triggering the stress response. You ll know this as nerves, tension, confusion and bad golf. And when you re focused on a (future) outcome you re no longer present which is where you need to be to play your best. To access your best skills, especially under pressure, we have to set goals which are completely within our control i.e. there s complete certainty about whether we can achieve them. In the mental game scorecard, you ll see that I d like you to establish your process goals for each round. What are process goals? These are things that you can do in your shot routines, which will maximize your chances of success and they have nothing to do with the actual outcome of the shot. If you can execute your process goals, it was a successful shot (it s as simple as that). Some examples of process goals are: Visualizing the shot Physical rehearsal of the shot Having a clear target Getting aligned correctly Having a "tempo" swing thought Focusing on breathing as you walk into the ball Positive affirmation before starting your back-swing Choosing a positive response to bad shots And there are many more possibilities. The key is to find out what works for YOU. You need to find your recipe for success. I recommend you pick 4 of the most important things and set those as process goals. To summarize, the goal of the mental game scorecard is: Ensure you do the things before, during, and after a shot to maximize success Hold you accountable Keep you more present At the bottom of the scorecard, I d also like to bring your attention to other things that can influence your performance, with a simple Post Round Review. If you have any questions regarding the Mental Game Scorecard let me know. Remember the Mental Game Scorecard is to get you thinking about your process before the shot and to maximize your results.
