Since taking over a struggling program in 1984, Berenson has led Michigan back to the upper echelon of college hockey, directing the Wolverines to national championships in 1996 and 1998 - the eighth and ninth in school history. Under his direction, U-M has qualified for 22 consecutive NCAA tournaments - an NCAA record - and reached the Frozen Four on 11 occasions. Berenson has also established the Wolverines as a Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) powerhouse, leading the program to a first-or-second-place finish in 20-of-22 seasons from 1991-2012. During that span Michigan has captured 11 CCHA regular-season titles, along with nine CCHA tournament crowns. He became just the sixth coach in NCAA hockey history to win 700 games, reaching the milestone with a 4-1 win at Bowling Green on Oct. 8, 2010, and his 756 career victories place him fifth on the NCAA all-time wins list. Berenson coached his 1,000th game for the Wolverines on Feb. 22, 2008 at Michigan State. Berenson returned to his alma mater in 1984 after a successful 17-year National Hockey League playing career and a six-year NHL coaching stint. In 1981, Berenson guided the St. Louis Blues to a 45-18-17 record and earned NHL Coach of the Year honors. As a student-athlete at Michigan, Berenson earned All- America and Michigan Most Valuable Player honors as a junior and senior (1961 and 1962). He became the first collegiate hockey player to jump directly to the NHL, playing nine games with the Montreal Canadiens at the conclusion of his senior season at U-M. Berenson holds a bachelor s degree from the School of Business (1962) and a Master s of Business Administration (1966) from Michigan. Berenson is a member of the University of Michigan Hall of Honor, the Dekers Club Hall of Fame, the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame and the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame.
