Willoughby Swimming Club INFORMATION BOOKLET 2014 / 2015 Season

Welcome to Willoughby Swimming Club Inc. We have prepared this summary to assist with your assimilation into our Club. More detailed information can be found on our Club information page on the Willoughby Swim Club website at http:///index.php/willoughby- club- information/. Willoughby Swim Club (WSC) was formed in 1990 in order to enable competitive swimmers within our local community the opportunity to join and compete for a swim club. Swimmers are coached by Brewer Swimming and coaching fees are paid directly to Brewer Swimming. WSC is a separate organisation and charge an annual membership fee which includes registration with Swimming NSW Ltd. WSC offers its members a real sense of belonging to a professional club, backed by excellent coaches, well grounded swimmers and supportive parents. Our focus is on competitive development by providing top level coaching and training programs, participation in club and external competitions, subsidised tours and social activities. We are proud to have Paul Hardman as our Head Coach. Paul possesses an abundance of knowledge and experience, holding a Platinum Licence in Swimming Coaching - the highest level attainable - and being one of the very few coaches in NSW to have achieved this qualification. Paul has won several accolades for his achievements to date, including 1991 Australian Age Group Coach of the Year, has twice been announced as NSW Coach of the Year and is listed on the ASCTA Honour Roll for FINA World Champion Coaches. For more information on Paul please refer to the Coaches page on our website. The club is non- discriminatory and welcomes members regardless of age, gender, race or disability. Member welfare documents are available on the club s web site / Willoughby Swimming Club 2014/2015 Season Competitive Swimming all you need to know! Competitions are divided into a Long Course Season (50m pool) which run annually from September to April and a Short Course Season (25m pool) from May to August. WSC is a member club of Swimming NSW and our Regional Swimming Association - Sydney Metro North East (SMNE).

Racing at Competition level means your times become official and are recorded on the Swimming NSW Website; http://www.nsw.swimming.org.au/ Click on the Results tab on right hand side of page and use your surname to commence searching for your times. It is a good idea to keep a hard copy of your Personal Best times (PB s) for easy access as these are times you use to enter races. We participate in external competitions under SMNE, Swimming NSW and Swimming Australia. All swimmers are encouraged to participate in theses competitions and should consult with coaches to determine their specific events. Aside from club events, most competitions do require a qualifying time. These can be found on the meet program. Competition Friday night club races Club hosted meets e.g. Club Championships Club subsidised tour meet, Canberra mid- 2014 SMNE Championships NSW Metropolitan Championships NSW State Age & Open Championships Australian Age & Open Championships Eligibility All club members All club members Club members achieving specified times Club members achieving SMNE specified times Qualifying times set by Swimming NSW Qualifying times set by Swimming NSW Qualifying times set by Swimming Australia The club also enters relay teams in a variety of carnivals. Our swimmers thrive on the camaraderie and excitement they derive from a relay swim. Relay teams are selected by the Club Coach, and are based not only on best times achieved but on recent performances, and we trust his decisions will be respected. In recent years, the Club has achieved high levels of success in individual and relay events from Area right up to National competition levels. Carnival Entries: Our targeted meets are publicised to members via Jodie Spano, our Race Secretary. For Club run and SMNE meets the Race Secretary will process all entries, once notified of an impending meet, please email Jodie your race choices, including the event no, age group and entry time. Payment will then be required to be paid via EFT, Cheque or Cash via our box at Willoughby Leisure Centre. Preferred payment is EFT: Willoughby Swimming Club

BSB: 112-879 Account: 098535969 Please include Surname and Meet name as your reference. For entry to Championships held by Swimming NSW and Swimming Australia, the individual is responsible to enter via the respective website. Please ensure you submit by the due date as there are no leniencies. This procedure is straightforward and details are available on both websites. Payment is made by credit card online. Please ensure you have record of your membership number and password as they are requested at commencement of entry procedure. Throughout the year the Race Secretary may notify Swimmers of other carnivals identified on the Swimming NSW website that are not targeted and will not be attended by club coaches, if you would like to attend the Race Secretary will coordinate your entries. Club Race Nights: Club race nights are the perfect introduction to competitive racing. The club holds races on five Friday evenings throughout each school term. Entry is simple, just be present and ready to race at 6:30pm. Results and progressive point score are published on our website. http:///index.php/club- nights- program/. Timelines: With the exception of Club race nights, timelines are available for all meets we attend. Please refer to either the SMNE or Swimming NSW website to print out your timeline. This will provide you with a relatively accurate guide of your race times. Please aim to have your Swimmer at the Pool at least 1.5hrs prior to their race time in order that they have sufficient time to warm up and get into their suits. Race Day at SOPAC Please refer to the meet program or timeline for warm up times. An official warm up commences 1hr prior to the commencement of the first race of the day. If you are swimming within the first 2-3 hrs of this time it is suggested you join our coaches for the warm up session. Swimmers can enter the pool on the eastern side and they will see the Willoughby Coaches and Team members close to lane 0. WSC Parents also sit on the eastern side; enter via door 104. Club Uniform:

Swimmers are required to wear the Willoughby swim cap for all external competitions. Purchase of at least one logo shirt is encouraged and this is essential for medal presentations. Further information is contained on our website http://www.willswim.orgs.au/index.php/willoughby- swim- club- new- member- registration/ Social Activities: Club Involvement Being a member of WSC is not just about competition, we pride ourselves on being a friendly and social club. Our swimmers spend a lot of time training together and in the process, strong friendship bonds are formed which often carry on beyond their swimming years. Aside from our club races and BBQ, our activities include the following: Ø Annual presentation day held in September each year which announces Club Champions and Club Point Score Winners and JX and YPS awards. Social activities are organised and an inspirational guest speaker will attend.

Ø In April we hold a gathering to acknowledge our National Age and new State level competitors, held at Willoughby Pool in conjunction with fun relays and BBQ. Ø Our Annual Christmas Party occurs on a Friday night in December and is held at Queenscliff Surf Club after a beach swim and activities, members of all ages enjoy this event. Ø Each New Years Eve we hold a swim at Clovelly Beach followed by breakfast BBQ. Ø The chilly winter trip to a Canberra meet is enjoyed by many swimmers each year; this includes a night in Canberra with a group dinner for swimmers and parents. Parental Support: It is crucial to the smooth running of our club that our parents are prepared to be involved with club activities. A number of parents have committee roles and many are accredited in various duties required for meet hosting and running of SMNE and other official carnivals. We appreciate any parents that can help in any way, time- keeping for example, is an easy and simple task and gets you close to the action so please bear this in mind when we call for assistance.
