Game #1, Road Game #1 Thursday, April 6th Coolray Field 7:05 PM Durham Bulls (0-0) vs. Gwinnett Braves (0-0) RHP Jake Faria (0-0, 0.00) vs. RHP Aaron Blair (0-0, 0.00) Tonight s Game The Durham Bulls begin their 93rd season tonight on the road in Gwinnett, with the start of a 4-game series against the South Division rival Braves. The Bulls got a jump start on their season on Tuesday with a 2-1 win over the Duke Blue Devils in the first ever Battle in the Bull City at the DBAP. Rays Anniversary The 2017 season marks the 20th anniversary of the Bulls becoming the Triple-A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays. Since making the jump from the Carolina to the International League in 1998, the Bulls have enjoyed 12 South Division titles, four Governor s Cup Championships, and one Triple-A National Championship. 2016 Season The Bulls experienced a rare losing season in 2016, as the club finished 64-80. The under-.500 record kept Durham out of the playoffs for the second straight season, but for just the 6th time since the team joined the IL in 1998. The Bulls were in first place as late in the year as August 12, before falling as far back as 4th place and 4.5 games back on August 26. The club made a late run by winning seven of their last 10 games, but in the end they finished 1.5 games back in the South Division. Third Time s The Charm Manager Jared Sandberg returns to Durham for his third year at the helm of the Bulls in 2017. The 39-year-old former big leaguer has been unable to get the Bulls to the postseason in his first two years as manager, finishing with a 74-40 mark in 2016 before going 64-80 in 2017. The Bulls have never gone three straight years without making the playoffs since joining the International League in 1998. Record-Setting Strikeouts The Durham pitching staff put together a historic strikeout performance in 2016 as the Bulls set a new International League record with 1,287 punch outs, shattering the old league record of 1,246 Ks that coincidentally had also been set by the Bulls back in 2013. RHP Jaime Schultz led the league with 163 Ks on the year and returns to Durham in 2017, although he ll presumably have far fewer innings to fan batters while coming out of the bullpen. The Ks are Nothing New The Bulls have actually led the league in strikeouts in each of the past five seasons, including 1,125 in 2012, 1,246 in 2013, 1,220 in 2014, 1,117 in 2015, and the record-setting 1,287 Ks in 2016. Battle in the Bull City The Bulls defeated the Duke Blue Devils 2-1 in the first ever Battle in the Bull City exhibition game Tuesday night. LHP Ryan Yarbough had a solid night with one run allowed on four hits and six strikeouts over six innings pitched, while Jake Hager (2-3, RBI) led the Bulls bats. Top System Showcased in Gwinnett The Atlanta Braves No. 1 ranked minor league system in well represented with their Triple-A affiliate, as Gwinnett begins the season with five Top 30 prospects. SS Ozzie Albies (No. 1 Atlanta prospect / No. 9 overall) leads the way, along with LHP Sean Newcomb (#5 / #77), RHP Lucas Sims (#18), 3B Rio Ruiz (#22), and RHP Luke Jackson (#26). Top Prospects in Durham The Bulls Opening Day roster is loaded with top prospects in 2017, with nine of the Top 30 prospects for Tampa Bay on the squad including three players listed among the Top 100 prospects in all of Minor League Baseball. The top-flight talent includes Willy Adames (Rays No. 1, MiLB No. 21), Jake Bauers (#4/#76), Casey Gillaspie (#5/#100), Chih-Wei Hu (#8), Jake Faria (#9), Jaime Schultz (#15), Ryne Stanek (#16), Taylor Guerrieri (#18), and Ryan Yarbrough (#24). Back in the (Bull) Saddle 13 of the 25 players (52%) on the Bulls Opening Day roster spent at least part of 2016 in Durham. The list includes Curt Casali, Jake Faria, Johnny Field, Ryan Garton, Casey Gillaspie, Jake Hager, Adam Kolarek, Patrick Leonard, Justin Marks, Jaime Schultz, Ryne Stanek, Dayron Varona, and Neil Wagner. Opening Day = Win The Bulls have won 5 straight games on Opening Day dating back to a 4-3 victory vs. Gwinnett in 2012. In fact, 3 of the Bulls 5 wins in that span have come at the expense of the Braves. 40-Man Men 9 members of the Bulls 25-man roster are also on the Rays 40- man roster (36%), including Willy Adames, Curt Casali, Jake Faria, Ryan Garton, Taylor Guerrieri, Chih-Wei Hu, Jaime Schultz, Ryne Stanek, and Chase Whitley.
