April 2017 CKJS Match Reports Another exciting read of match reports and competitions in which the children have been involved over the past few months. Please keep the vouchers coming in we already have more than 7000 which is enough to buy a pair of rugby posts or a set of kit! Rugby 1 On Wednesday 22 nd March, CKJS took 3 teams to participate in the annual SSN (School Sports Network) tag rugby tournament. Due to the RFU changing the format of competitions at primary level, the tournament became a festival with no winners. The day did not quite go as initially planned due to the weather! By mid-morning, the rain had set in and the players were becoming increasingly wet and cold. This meant the afternoon was cut short but not before some great rugby was observed. Weaving runs, dummies, faints, side-steps, diving tags, numerous tries and countless passes were all observed among our three teams. I would like to thank numerous people for all of their support and assistance. Without parents arranging lifts, bringing shelters (!) or supporting our teams in appalling conditions, we could not have had 3 teams representing the school. In addition, I cannot thank Mr Connor (Fiona s husband) and Mr Buxton (Oli s dad) enough, as they each coached a squad in the pouring rain. Without their help, the day would not have been possible. Rugby 2 On Friday 31 st March, CKJS took 3 teams to Cheltenham North for the re-arranged tournament from earlier in the month. The A team started off their group with a match against our C team. The A team showed no mercy over their friends winning the match 6-2 with tries from Barny (2), Luke, Alex (2) and Ollie. The following game was a hard match against Bishops Cleeve A. Some great tags and wonderful passing meant we won the match 6-5 with Max, Ollie, Alex and Anna amongst the try scorers. The final group game was against Grangefield B, knowing a win would mean they top the group and get the, supposedly, easier semi-final draw. The As made hard work of the match before their quality shone through, winning 7-3 with Ollie, Luke, Barny and Ben getting involved with the tries. The B team started their group well by beating Grangefield A 8-6; Daniel scoring twice, Joseph went two better and scored four tries and Ben and Tom added to our score. Their second game was against St James and a good performance lead to a 7-5 win. Joseph scored another hat-trick and Daniel, Tom, Ed and Ben each grabbed one. This meant the final game was a winner takes all match against Bishops Cleeve 'B', who had also got 2 wins out of 2. The game was end to end and the whole team showed crisp passing, weaving runs and a fantastic team spirit. The final score was 5-5 with Joseph (2), Ed, Tom and Zach scoring our points. Bishops Cleeve topped the group by scoring more tries in their previous matches. The C team had the hardest draw with matches against our A team, Bishops Cleeve A and Grangefield B. They lost 6-2 to our A team with Tom and Lucas collecting our points. A hard fought matched followed against Grangefield B where we ran out eventual winners, 5-3 with Isaac collecting a hat-trick and Oli and Tom each scoring one. Our final game was against Bishops Cleeve A and at one stage we were doing extremely well, holding them to a 1-1 draw; Isaac again scoring the try. However, the opposition were stronger and finished the match 7-2 winners with Tom picking up our consolation. This meant we finished 3 rd and went into The Plate section of the tournament. In the semi-finals of The Cup, the B team played first against Bishops Cleeve A. The team did extremely well with Oli and Tom both suffering injuries but wanted to soldier on. Bishops Cleeve went ahead early on but our B team showed immense character and never gave up. They refused to be beaten and with a slightly longer period of play they could have easily scored the extra try they required and, arguably, deserved. The final result was 9-8 to Bishops Cleeve, who may have felt fortunate to book their place in the final. Joseph (3), Daniel (2), Ed and Sam scored the tries. (There was confusion as to who else scored!) We would like to thank Mrs Asquith for coaching the team, we really appreciate you giving up your time. The A team did manage to book their place in the final by beating Bishops Cleeve B 7-5 and setting up a re-match of the group stage game against Bishops Cleeve A. The C team also managed to secure a place in The Plate final by beating Grangefield A 6-4 with Isaac scoring 3, Tom scoring 2 and Noah scoring 1. The C team then went on to win The Plate by beating St James 7-5 in a nail biting encounter. It was end to end and a case of, Who would make a mistake first? We manged to push St James into touch and force a turnover from which we scored and got our noses in front. Isaac, again, scored 3, using his pace to good effect and George and Lucas each scored 2. Whilst Damon did not score in the tournament, his organisation and positional play allowed others the freedom and was a major part of the squad's success. Very well done to the C team. It was not such a pleasing final for the A team as Bishops Cleeve A won the final 8-5, gaining revenge for the defeat earlier in the tournament. However, the squad should leave with their heads held high and feeling proud of what they achieved. Again, a big thank you to Mr Buxton for his help and expertise in coaching the A squad. We really appreciate you giving up your time.
FEET FIRST DANCE FESTIVAL Our Street Dance Club recently competed in the Feet First Dance Festival held at Cheltenham Town Hall. On Wednesday 8th of March, 25 of our Year 5 pupils took part in the exciting event - Feet First Dance Fest. This dance festival was a celebration of different dance styles and featured performances from local primary and secondary schools. The Year 5s performed a routine to the song 'Rockabye' which featured lots of moves choreographed by the children, including breakdance. The children really put their all into the performance and rose to the exhilarating atmosphere created by the coloured spotlights and large audience. They also did the school proud with their behaviour, showing fantastic support for the other schools when they were watching performances. There is a video on the school website under 3
Football 1 On Tuesday 28 th February, the A and B teams welcomed teams from St Marks to CKJS for fixtures. The A team knew they needed to start straight from the off and they came out of the blocks like a flash of lightening! Fergus poked home the first goal after their keeper failed to gather a cross; a great start! St Marks came back strong and were soon level thanks to an outstanding strike which gave Thomas, in goal, no chance. The pressure piled on our defence but we absorbed it and looked dangerous on the counter attack. It was on the counter when Fergus put pressure on their defence, capitalised on their error before neatly slotting the ball home to make it 2-1. It was 3-1 just before the break when Isaac s darting, mazing run led to him setting up Una to neatly finish and put us firmly in the driving seat. George hammered in a fourth shortly after half-time, before going on to grab a brace. Una matched him by bagging a second before Fergus went one better and completed his hattrick. Isaac went on another solo effort to make it 8; a goal he firmly deserved. St Marks pulled another one back making the final score 8-2 and setting up a mouth-watering trip to Lakeside in the final group stage game of The Plate. The B team also managed a well-earned victory by beating St Marks B Team 2-0 with goals from Isaac and Ethan. Rory played a vital part in both goals and Saad should be pleased with his clean sheet. Rosa worked hard and showed some lovely touches in addition to Molly s intelligent running off the ball. A great result for our B team! On Friday 10th March, 10 girls from Y5 and Y6 participated in a girls football tournament with many other schools from around Cheltenham. We started well by beating Glenfall 3-2, with a hat-trick from Una. This was followed by a convincing 4-2 win against St James with Una, again, grabbing all 4 strikes. This meant we won our group and progressed to the next stage of the tournament. Because we had time on our side, we played 2 friendlies against Glenfall and St James. We experimented with the side and this allowed the girls more freedom to play in their chosen positions. We lost to Glenfall but beat St James 2-0 with Jennifer striking twice. This allowed us to progress to Prestbury for the final group stage where we faced a strong Bishops Cleeve team who managed to get the better of us and won our group. However, we beat Warden Hill 3-1 with Una, Rosa and Hannah all finding the net. Molly, Isla, Phoebe, Lani, Lucie and Alice all had a fantastic afternoon and showed some wonderful skills whilst doing CKJS proud. Very well done, girls! On Monday 13 th March, Charlton Kings Junior School took an A and a B team to Lakeside for a crucial match in our season. The A team needed at least a draw to make it through to The Plate final against St Edward s. We started slowly with a pitch that clearly favoured the home team. Thomas made a couple of final saves to keep us in the game and go in at half-time 0-0. We were much better in the second half with Una linking up with Fergus and the defence of George and Jo (and in the first half, Joseph) looking solid. Whilst both teams went close, neither could find a way to break the deadlock and the match finished 0-0. This sets up a mouth-watering tie against St Edward s where the winner takes all The B team did exceptionally well by winning 9-0! Sam hit a hat-trick, Rory went one better by grabbing 4 and Ethan and Rosa both found their way on to the score sheet. This was a very impressive win under the stand in coach of Mr Mercurio! CKJS would like to thank him for guiding the team to a fantastic win.
Football 2 On Friday 24 th Festival. March, we took a football B team to Leckhampton for the annual B Team Our first match was against Leckhampton which we won 3-1; a massive improvement from the results earlier in the season. Sam got the first, Ethan slotted the second before Alex made it three. The hosts did pull one back but we started the festival with a solid win. Our second match was against Naunton Park and the team, boosted with the win from their first game, played well and battled hard. It was 0-0 at half-time before Saad (our goalie) managed to assist Ethan who finished with an audacious lob! A 1-0 win and 100% winning start. Rory looked good in the heart of our midfield, Conor and Isaac kept it tight at the back with some fantastic tackles and Rosa looked dangerous out wide, causing problems for the opposition. For our final game, Jacob played in the middle and linked the defence and attack well. However, complacency was beginning to creep in and Glenfall hammered home a thunderous free kick right at the death. The team didn t even have time to restart when the referee brought the match to a conclusion. With no results recorded, there were no winners. However, with 2 wins and 1 loss, the squad should feel pleased as the curtain came down on their season. In sport the difference between success and failure can be as small as a fraction of a second, the width of a line or the reach of a finger and the A team didn t have that bit of lady luck they deserved. In their final match of the season, on Tuesday 21st March, they were taking on St Edward s in the final of the Plate Tournament. Having played them three times already (drawing twice and losing once) they knew it was going to be tough. Every single member of the squad throughout the season had played their part to reach this stage. As the game started, we were going uphill and looked dangerous on the counter. Thomas made a fine save, George s positioning was fantastic to clear up at the back and Fergus worked his socks off pressurising their back-line. Una showed some lovely touches in the opposition s half and at the break it was 0-0 and all to play for. Luke and Joseph came on at half-time and contributed in attack and defence as we knew the first goal would be decisive. Ben and Jo linked up well and Ben battled on in the heart of our midfield. Isaac produced some memorable dribbles but it was St Edward s who got the first goal with a neat finish. We piled on the pressure and thought we equalised but their keeper made two fantastic saves, keeping the score at 1-0. The last five minutes of the match were played in and around their penalty area but we could not find the crucial strike to take it to extra-time. A superb performance and one the squad should be proud of. We also took an additional B team to St Edward s who played well and deserved more than the score line shows. At half-time they were 4-0 down but came back to draw the second half 2-2; the final score being 6-2. George set up one strike with Jack and Alex getting on the score sheet. A hard fought game and a second half to be proud of!
Football 3 A Team B Team
Football 4 The curtain call for the 2016-2017 football season was also the start of preparation for the 2017-2018 season. We took two U9 teams to St Edward s; an A and a B team. The A team started brightly, troubling the St Edward s defence early on before Sam finished smartly to put us 1-0 up. Soon after, St Edward s had a free kick in a dangerous position which looked destined for the top corner until Yannick pulled off one of the saves of the season! It is just a shame the cameras weren t there to replay it. We went into halftime 3-0 up thanks to dangerous corners from Finlay, one of which went straight in, and a second from Sam. A brilliant halftime score and one the lads deserved. After the break, St Edward s piled on the pressure to try to force a way back into the match. Edwyn and James looked solid in defence and contributed to a miserable afternoon for the hosts. Alfie had volunteered to go in goal, following a superb first half on the wing. However, he could do nothing about the strike which pulled a goal back for the home side. Daniel looked sharp up front before James finished powerfully to make the score 4-1. St Edward s did manage to sneak another before the final whistle meaning we won the match 4-2. The B team did incredibly well, winning the game 9-2! A great result, especially as they showed character to come back from 1-0 down. William scored two, Etienne went one better and notched a hat-trick, Sam and Jed each grabbed one and Finn hit a brace. Even though Brody, Ben and James did not get on the score sheet, they each contributed to the game in their own way and all of the players should be proud of their performance. Cross Country 2 The interschool s cross country competition concluded on Thursday, 9 th March with the final race at St Edward s school. Race 3: Cheltenham College, Thursday 2 nd March 2017 Again, 12 girls and 12 boys from years 4, 5 & 6 ran at Cheltenham College. The course was flat and fast, and each race had around 180 children running. The girls race was first and all of our girls finished the race in the top half, showing the class of our runners. Molly, Hetty and Ella all gained top 10 places, putting our girls team into the lead overall at this point. The boys race started a little congested again, and several of our boys had to recover from a precarious start but did so graciously, all catching up to achieve great positions. Isaac achieved his first win of the series in this closely run race between some extremely speedy boys! William was close by Isaac throughout, gaining a fantastic third! As with the girls, all of our boys finished strongly, in the top half of the field of runners. In addition to this, the reserves stepped up to compete with just one day s notice and really did us proud. Well done everyone; resilience was shown by all, especially those who had a shaky start! Race 4: St Edward s, Thursday 9 th March 2017 This was our final visit to St Edward s school this season. 24 athletes, from years 4, 5 and 6 ran, this time taking on The Hill. Both the girls and boys races were, again, incredibly fast and competitive. It would be fascinating to know at what speed the first 50m of these races are run at!! Our runners exceeded our expectations this time, all managing to transfer their nerves into determination in their performances. We, once again, achieved three top 10 places in the girls race and three top 11 in the boys race. All 24 runners played a crucial part in the overall result, and their enthusiasm was apparent throughout the race. The result could not have been better: an overall win for the girls, boys and combined! Three impressive trophies for our cabinet! Everybody was extremely proud and celebrated fittingly. Many children received well deserved individual awards, which, in turn, led to them being invited to represent Cheltenham in the District Schools Competition.
Cross Country 3 Newent District Schools Having achieved top ten places in the district schools league, Hetty, Ella, Molly, Evie, William and Isaac represented Cheltenham Schools in Newent, securing wins for Cheltenham in the both the boys and girls competitions. All of them performed incredibly. Molly, Hetty, Isaac and William went on to compete in the National Primary Schools Cross Country Final in Loughborough. Congratulations to them and to everyone who ran so well in Newent. We are very proud of you. National Schools Cross Country, Loughborough All four of our amazing runners ran superbly in this race and all gained top 20 places! With over 200 runners, this is a major achievement for them - congratulations again! Gloucestershire girls won the national competition overall and the boys came third. The cross country season is now over and it has been amazing. All of our runners, who attend the club, have shown enthusiasm to improve and as a result of this, each and every person has! Time-trial times have been going down each week. Every runner inspires and supports each other to improve and this motivation encourages each and every individual. Well done to all those children that have attended the club. Now we can t wait to see what the next season has in store! Netball On Tuesday, 17th January, CKJS Year 5 and 6 played a netball match against St Johns School. It was a home match for CKJS and Miss Tibbles was the referee. This was our second game of the season and we were trying to maintain our winning record. The game didn t start well though as St John s scored straight away. However, CKJS then played some very good netball and won the match 11-1. After the match we all shook hands, said congratulations and then had a drink and a biscuit together!
