Secretary s Notes October 7th meeting called to order at 7:20PM. There were 25 members present. Old business: Cathy still has FMDAC cards. If you have not received yours see Cathy. It was also made known that all club members who pay their dues by the November meeting will be entered in a drawing for a silver round. The club bought a new laser printer. It is a cannon brand and was bought at Sam's. The printer, paper and warranty cost $199.09. Members were also reminded of the upcoming diamond hunt in Arkansas. Gilbert introduced a visitor tonight. His name is TJ Vaunn. New member applications were passed out. We also had some newsletters for those that wanted them...the FMDAC news letter and the Arkoma Coin & Relic Club of Siloam Springs. The Next Old Agency Cemetery Cleanup and Outing will be on the 5th and 6th of November. On November 5th we will continue with our cleanup project at the Old Agency Cemetery north of Muskogee. We had two cleanup days last Spring and we cleared the brush out of two thirds of the east half of the cemetery. This is an ongoing project and we plan to work on it the first Saturday of each month during the Fall, Winter, and Spring working seasons until we have it finished. On the 5th we will have to do some maintenance on the weeds in the part that we have already cleared and we will also continue removing the brush working our way west. We need some chainsaws, weed eaters (with metal blades if you have them), loppers, and wheel barrels. Most of us will just have to drag and pile the brush outside of the cemetery. You will probably want to bring some work gloves, a long sleeve shirt (just in case of poison Ivy), and a sack lunch. Dress in layers because all of you know about Oklahoma weather. On November 6th we will be hunting the pasture east of the cemetery. We need all club members to come out and support this worthwhile project. You have to come out Saturday to be able to hunt on Sunday. If you are unable to do much physical work just come out on Saturday to show your support then you can still hunt. Due to the high cost of gas you will have the option of camping on the property. We will meet both days at 9:00 November 5th and 6th at the Barking Frog Citgo Convenience Store. It is located on the East side of US 69 north of Muskogee and south of the Arkansas River. Coming from the north (Tulsa) on US 69 toward Muskogee, just after you cross the Arkansas River the store will be on your left (east). It is just south of Wheelers Metals and across 69 from the Sand Plant. The Harnage Cemetery Cleanup and Outing will be on November 19th and 20th. On November 19th we will start on the Harnage Cemetery located in the Gooseneck Bend area of Muskogee it is EOCPO Club Member Don Harnage s family cemetery going back to the Cherokee Nation days. This cemetery unlike Agency will probably be a one day project depending on how much help we have. It will involve some brush clearing. We will need to bring the same stuff as the Agency cleanup. On November 20th we will be hunting on various properties in the Gooseneck Bend area. We will meet both days at 9:00 November 19th and 20th at the convenience store at Chandler and SH 165 (Muskogee Turnpike) on the East side of Muskogee at 9:00. Take the Chandler exit off of the Muskogee Turnpike or US 165 and the store is located on the east side of the Turnpike along the service road. You will need to bring the same things as the Agency Cleanup. The Mystery Token Has Been Found Hi! It s me, the shiny round disk named Fisher. I am also called the Mystery Token. I have been buried in the ground for several months and was becoming rather paranoid because of all of the other metallic junk underground with me. I felt like they were closing in on me and then all that tall Johnson grass began to smother me. But, thank God, Gene came along and rescued me by cutting an area of the grass down with hand operated grass shears. Then he set his detector s discrimination way up and the signal strength 1 so that he could find me in all the trash. In three minutes I was out of the ground and breathing freely. Thanks, Gene, you will be rewarded with a Gold Coin. I know you told me you were going to enter me in the find of the month, but I think you are blowing smoke there. I owe you one--so go for it. Cleaning Coins and Relics With Hydrogen Peroxide There are a lot of people that will swear that this works good. I have never tried it. If you do let me know how it works. Directions for the Cleaning of Artifacts/Coins using Hydrogen Peroxide Required items: before 1 - Disposable plastic bowl I use an empty margarine container 1 - Bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide which is 3% H2O2 1 - Heat Source I have a gooseneck lamp with a halogen bulb in it. 1 - Box of Cotton Swabs Q Tips are the best others fall apart too easily after Make sure the artifact/coin is free of any oil coating like olive oil if you previous had soaked this object. The oil coating prevents the Hydrogen Peroxide from working on the dirt. Put object to be cleaned in disposable plastic bowl and then pour Hydrogen Peroxide on top until it is at least a half an inch above the object to be cleaned. Using the lamp as a heater, I position the lamp to within 2-4 inches of the bowl. This heats up the solution. Be careful not to cause anything to melt from too much heat, use common sense for this part. A Heat Source is NOT necessary, but it does speed up the cleaning significantly... ADDED: YOU CAN USE A MICROWAVE TO HEAT THE PEROXIDE UP FIRST, BUT BE CAREFULL AND PLEASE USE A SAFE CONTAINER WITH NO METAL IN IT, PUT THE RELIC/COIN IN AFTER THE HEAT UP IN THE MI- CROWAVE!!!!! If the solution is hot enough the boiling of the Peroxide should be very evident to you and should remind you of a geyser. Once it is cooking it sprays the bubbles and smokes a little also. This should continue for anywhere from one hour to two or three. Periodically remove the object if you want to check on the progress. I usually then lay it on a napkin and take a cotton swab and start to gently rub and see how much crud is coming off the object. It might take several hours or more to get real clean. You might even have to repeat the entire process if the object has a lot of stubborn crud on it. When the bubbling of the Peroxide stops the cleaning also is done. If it needs more cleaning start over again with fresh fluid. Keep your cotton swabs wet with the Peroxide while gently rubbing, this will prevent scratches. When done with your cleaning, rinse the object well with water. The first coin I did with this method did not require any rubbing whatsoever. I believe each artifact/coin is unique in how it is cleaned. Some did not clean up hardly at all. If it is a corroded object, like a pitted, green Indian Head, I don t think anything you do will help that. My best advice is to experiment on non-valuable objects first and then move on to your better finds once you build confidence in what you are doing. The objects may appear dried out after cleaning, if you want you can coat with a coin preservative like Blue Ribbon Coin Conditioner and Preservative or a similar product that is on the market.
