Brighton Cheerleading Program Important Dates to Remember *General Summer Practice Wednesday Thursday: May-Aug 8 *Varsity Cheer Camp June 15 th -18th *School year practice begins: August 6th *Competition Season: October December Time Commitment The time commitment for the Brighton Cheerleading Program is from May of 2018 until April of 2019. **Please make sure you take into account that there are usually two-three games a week that athletes are required to cheer. ** As you can see, being a member of the cheer program at Brighton is a HUGE commitment. The coaching staff asks you to think thoroughly about your decision to tryout. We expect our athletes to be committed to our program 100% starting from day one until the last day of the season. Tryouts There will be approximately 25 positions available: 16-25 for Varsity We may or may not fill all spots for a given team. Similar to most other athletic programs in our school, the coaching staff will select their teams at the end of the tryout process. The goal of our tryout process is to find athletes who meet our athletic standards, who are coachable and can work in a team environment, and most importantly will represent our program in a positive manner. Tryouts will consist of three days of learning, performing, and coach s evaluations. The third day of tryouts will be a formal evaluation in front of the coaching staff over the material we have covered throughout the week. It is crucial that you attend every day of tryouts to be properly evaluated. If you are going to miss a day of tryouts please make arrangements with the coaching staff prior to your absence. At the end of the week after coaching and formal evaluations the coaching staff will make selections for the 2018-2019 season. The following items are all things that we are looking for when selecting the teams for the new season. Please be proactive in your preparations for tryouts! Spirit & Enthusiasm Voice Projection (deep & loud) Facial Expression (natural, using eyes) Body Language (confidence) Appearance (professional, hair back) Motion Technique Sharpness (strong motions) Placement (accurate arm placement) Precision (motions are hit on count/on word) Timing & Rhythm (in dance) Stunting Form & Flexibility (essential for Varsity flyers) Execution Level of difficulty Tumbling Natural Progression!! We want to see clean, solid tumbling Form (legs together, pointed toes, strong finish) Toe Touch Pointed Toes Height & Execution (correct form) Landing Strength & Conditioning Endurance Cardio Showmanship & Overall Appeal Team Results: Team results will be posted on the main front doors of the high school

Financial Commitment Please DO NOT let the financial information below become overwhelming. This financial information should not become a deterrent in any athlete s tryout process. There are many options for financial support. Item Athletic Fees *paid at registration NOT to Cheer Coaches EXPENSE SHEET (Prices are approximate.) New Varsity $135.00 Returning Varsity Cheerleader $135.00 Camp $440.00 $440.00 Camp Wear and uniform Package $500.00 $350.00 $1075.00 $925.00 This year there will be a payment schedule as all funds need to be paid in full by November per the school district. Tumbling Class As a part of the BHS Cheerleading team each cheerleader will be required to take a tumbling class with Empire Athletics. Grades and Eligibility BHS Spirit Team Rules and Guidelines o Any athlete with a C or below in one or more classes will be required to attend academic study hall with a teacher. This will continue until the grade improves. If a student does not attend Academic study hall for the week, they will be benched for the next upcoming event. o CHSAA guidelines do not permit more than one F at any time during the school year. Grades are pulled by the athletic office on a weekly basis. If you have two F s at any given time you will be benched for any upcoming events that week. You are still required to practice AND you are still required to attend events in uniform, but you will sit with your coach. Grades are pulled on Thursday and the athlete will have until Friday at 3:00 pm to improve their grade. They must also report the grade change to the Athletic Office. **If you are ineligible any time during the season, you will not letter. Additionally, if you are ineligible to cheer/perform 3 times during the season due to your grades or attendance, you will be removed from the team to focus on academics. Attendance Absences Each Squad member will be entitled to 3 absences per the season. 1. Absences can occur at practices, games, performances, designated events, or kid s clinics. 2. Only one absence can occur each day. 3. All Members are expected to make arrangements around our scheduled events. This includes doctor appointments, family functions, birthdays, work, babysitting etc. Absences are given they are not taken. As a coaching staff, we will post practices, games, and other scheduled events at least two weeks in advance on your team s blog. However, some situations do arise when we are unable to give two weeks notice, for example when one of our athletic teams makes a playoff appearance. 4. All other school functions (choir concerts, AP study sessions, student council events, etc.) will be counted as an absence unless your coach is notified one week in advance in writing. All extra help required from teachers needs to be taken care of before school or during an off period. 5. Even if an absence is excused through the school, it will still be counted as an absence in the spirit program, because we do not have excused or unexcused absences (any sickness is counted as an absence). We expect you to be at practice unless you are very sick. 5. There is never a time when a student or parent should consider missing school instead of extra-curricular activities. The cheerleading program emphasizes school first. In fact, if you miss a full day of school you are not allowed to participate in any school sponsored activities after school (CHSAA Rule). However, if you are at school during the school day you need to be present at practice. 6. Long term illnesses will be dealt with on an individual basis 7. EXTREME family emergencies require parent notification as soon as possible. Some examples include: family death, heart attacks, funerals etc. Tardies A Tardy can occur when a member is more than ten minutes late or leaves more than 10 minutes early. This includes practice, or any other scheduled events. 2 tardies = 1 absence Consequences of Multiple Absences (per season) 1. First absence= Warning from Coach to Student. Student benched from one activity. 2. Second absence= Parent Notification. Student benched from one activity. 3. Third absence= Meeting with parents, student, and coach.

4. Fourth absence= Dismissal from the team. o If your daughter is going to be absent, we need to receive a phone call, text or email no later than 12:00 noon, so that we can plan for practice accordingly. o If you are injured or sick, you are still expected to come to practice so that you will not miss valuable information regarding cheers, routines, etc. If you are injured, you must get treatment from the trainer. All treatment (including taping and icing) must be completed by 3:00pm. Event Requirements Initials Parent Initials Athletes Athletes are to arrive 1 hour prior to the scheduled time for football games, and 30 minutes prior to all other games.
