Following the game vs. Houston, Memphis has just one regular season game remaining, hosting Cincinnati, Monday, at 7 p.m. in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. IN OUR LAST MEETING It was a big first half for sophomore forward Asia Fuqua-Bey in the last meeting with the Cougars. The Tigers were without starting point guard Breigha Wilder-Cochran (injury) and only had starting center Pa Sonna Hope for six minutes (illness), which meant the loss of two starters for Memphis. Fuqua-Bey shouldered their loss in a big way, scoring 14 of Memphis first 18 points in the opening half. The Tigers needed Fuqua-Bey s big half, as Houston out-rebounded Memphis 24-18 and knocked down four first half triples to hit the halftime break down just 28-25. After Memphis pushed the lead to double digits, the Tigers went the final 7:47 of the game without a field goal, relying on defensive stops and a 5-for-6 performance from the free-throw line to hang on for the 48-40 victory. SERIES HISTORY This is the 26th meeting between Houston and the Tigers. Memphis win in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse back in January gave Memphis a 13-12 lead in the series history. CONFERENCE CLARITY The Tigers know they can t be a six seed for the upcoming American Athletic Conference championship tournament in Connecticut next week, but Memphis could still be a seven seed, or eight, or nine. The long and short of it is the Tigers need to win both games to have a shot at a seven seed and would need help from Temple, otherwise they could be an eight seed. Lose both games and the Tigers could be passed by UCF, who is just one game back from Memphis. But UCF could only pass the Tigers by winning both of their games and hoping the Tigers lose both of theirs as the Tigers swept the regular season match-up between the two teams and hold the tie break there. Either way, Memphis knows they will play in the first round of the American Athletic Conference championship, they just don t know if they are playing in the 6 p.m. (ET) game or the 8 p.m. (ET) one. HEARN SEEING 20-20 Sophomore guard Ariel Hearn posted her 11th 20- plus point game of the season on Tuesday night in the game at USF, finishing with 21 points. That was a second straight 20-plus point night for Hearn, after she scored 20 points against SMU on Saturday. Hearn has posted back-to-back 20-point performances four times this season. She hasn t yet posted three straight 20-point nights. WILDER-COCHRAN SETS FRESHMAN AS- SIST RECORD Freshman point guard Breigha Wilder-Cochran had four assists in the loss to SMU Saturday. That pushed her to 110 assists on the season, breaking the Memphis freshman single season mark. That previous record of 109 was set by now-sophomore Ariel Hearn last season. With six assists in the loss at USF, Wilder-Cochran comes in to the Houston game with 116 assists on the season. The 116 assists for Wilder-Cochran is impressive for a true freshman, but to put that in perspective, she is also just 31 assists shy of the 10th-best single season assist mark in the overall school record book (Marcia Monk, 147, 1980-81). SPEAKING OF TRIPLE DIGIT ASSISTS This year marks the first time a Melissa McFerrincoached Memphis team has had two players with 100 or more assists (Wilder-Cochran with 116, Hearn with 100). It s actually the first time since 1997-98 that a Memphis team has had two players with 100 or more assists in the same season (Yolanda Reed, 141, and Heather Phillips, 105). Hearn s 100 assists this year ranks her tied for sixth all-time in the sophomore records. She won t be able to set the sophomore record though -- that s 164 assists for Nicole Murry in 1994-95. Hearn needs 12 more assists to pass former teammate Bilqis Abdul- Qaadir s sophomore season mark from 2011-12. HEARN FEELING HELPFUL With her five assists in the loss at USF, Ariel Hearn became the first Tiger since LaToya Bullard to have back-to-back 100-assist seasons. Bullard had 127 assists in 2007-08, then missed 2008-09 to injury and came back to dish out 134 assists in 2009-10. GAINS ON THE GLASS Memphis out-rebounded USF, 35-32, in the loss on Tuesday night. That was just the third time since conference play began that the Tigers have out-rebounded a league opponent. Memphis has won one of the three games it has out-worked their American Conference foes on the glass (UCF). TWO FOR 20 Ariel Hearn and Asianna Fuqua-Bey each scored 20 points in the Tigers loss to SMU on Saturday. That marked the first time Memphis has had two players go for 20 or more points since the same duo did it on the road at Tennessee Tech (12/14/13). Both players finished with 21 points in that game. LOOKING TO SNAP STREAK The Tigers have lost seven straight games. The seven-game losing streak is the longest for a McFerrin-coached Memphis team. Memphis not lost seven straight games since the 2006-07 season (16 games). YOU GOT SWATTED Heading in to the Houston game, senior center Pa Sonna Hope now has 28 blocks on the season, which ranks fifth among the Memphis single season records for a member of the senior class. She needs two more blocks to match former teammate Nicole Dickson s mark of 30 from last year. On her two-year Tiger career, Hope has 63 blocks, which is tied with Dickson for 6th in the Memphis career record book. Counting her 33 blocks from her two seasons at Ole Miss, she needs four more blocks to get to 100 for her entire college career. GOODMAN GETTING MORE TIME Freshman post Brandi Goodman missed all of the Tigers pre-season conditioning and camp, but as the season as gone on, Goodman is catching up to her Tiger teammates. She played a career-high 26 minutes in the loss to SMU, finishing with eight points, six rebounds and two steals. HEARN WORKING TOWARD 1,000TH POINT Ariel Hearn enters the Houston game with 933 points on the books. With at least three games remaining, it ll be a feat for Hearn to get to 1,000 points this season. Needing 67 points over the final two regular season games and at least one guaranteed conference tournament game, Hearn needs to average 22.3 points per game to get to a grand this year..hearn has scored double-digit points in all but four games this year (24 of 28 games). FINDING A THIRD REBOUNDER Over the last five games, just two Tigers are averaging 5.0 or more rebounds a game. Asia Fuqua-Bey is averaging 8.2 rebounds a game over the last five outings. Pa Sonna Hope has added 5.4 rpg in that same stretch. Could Wilder-Cochran emerge as the team s next consistent rebounder? The freshman point guard tied a career-high with nine boards in the loss at USF, UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS 2013-14 MEMPHIS WOMEN S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES

HEAD COACH MELISSA McFERRIN McFERRIN S RECORD BY OPPONENT Melissa McFerrin 6th Season at Memphis At Memphis: 106-85 (.555) Career: 156-155 (.502) Melissa McFerrin was named the University of Memphis women s basketball coach on April 19th, 2008, becoming the fourth coach in the program s modern history. McFerrin, the 2008 Patriot League Coach of the Year, spent four seasons at American University in Washington D.C. Her 2007 American team advanced to the Patriot League championship game and her 2008 squad won the school s first-ever Patriot League regular season championship, finishing with an 18-14 overall record. That team won 11 of 12 games down the stretch, advancing to the post season for the first time since 1997-98 with a WNIT bid. In four seasons at American, McFerrin compiled a 50-70 record and guided five different players to all-conference honors, while two other players earned all-freshman honors. Prior to her stint with American, McFerrin was an associate head coach at the University of Minnesota from 2002-2004. She helped Minnesota to a 50-15 record, including an NCAA Final Four appearance in 2004 and a Sweet Sixteen berth in 2003. She signed two recruiting classes ranked in the top 20 at Minnesota, and helped guide two Kodak All-Americans, including WNBA player Lindsey Whalen. McFerrin s time at Minnesota came after a five-year association with the WNBA. She began her affiliation with the WNBA as an assistant coach with the New York Liberty from 1997-1999, assisting with coaching duties for the 1997 WNBA Championship runner-up Liberty squad. She moved to the Washington Mystics as an assistant coach in 1999-2000, taking over as the Mystics General Manager in 2000. As the GM, she guided a team that made its first-ever WNBA play-off appearance in 2000, and handled all player trades and draft decisions before joining the coaching staff at Minnesota. Her WNBA stint followed a 14-year coaching career that made three different stops. McFerrin began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Wayland Baptist University in Texas from 1983-84. She was then hired as an assistant coach at Central Michigan University, where she helped the Chippewas to a 95-77 record in her six seasons, including a 1985 Mid-American Conference championship. She left Central Michigan in 1990 to become an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at The Ohio State University. At Ohio State, she helped the Buckeyes to a 118-90 record and a 1993 Big Ten championship and an NCAA National Championship runner-up. That 1993 squad benefited from a 1992 McFerrin recruiting class that was ranked No. 1 in the nation, one of seven Buckeye recruiting classes to be nationallyranked under McFerrin s watch at OSU. In 1996, McFerrin helped guide the Buckeyes to the NCAA Second Round before leaving the following season for the WNBA. A native of Cassville, Mo., McFerrin was a four-year letterwinner and starting point guard for the University of Missouri Tigers from 1979 to 1983. She helped Missouri to a 1983 Big Eight tournament championship and NCAA tournament berth and a 1982 NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance, earning Big Eight honorable mention honors and Scholar-Athlete awards along the way. PAGE 4 Tuesday night. She is averaging 4.6 rebounds per game in the last five games. DOWNTOWN! Hearn has converted 61 made triples this year after hitting 27 last year. For her career, she already ranks in the Memphis career top 10 in three-point field goals made with 88, good for ninth all-time. She will have to get well over 100 before she moves up in the career records. The eighth place spot is at 131 (Kelly Herron, 1997-2001). HOPE LOOKING FOR 400TH POINT Senior Pa Sonna Hope is 29 points shy of her 400th career point heading in to the game at Houston. Hope played just six minutes in the first game against Houston as she was ill and tried to play but was unable to continue. This will be a healthy Hope s first shot at Houston since the conference opener of last season. STIFFENING UP THE DEFENSE Tiger opponents have shot over 50 percent from the field in each of the last three games (54.2 percent for Louisville, 57.1 percent for SMU and 60.7 percent for USF). In seven of the Tigers 16 conference contests, the opposition has hit over 50 percent from the floor (UConn twice, Rutgers once, Louisville twice, SMU on Saturday and USF on Tuesday). SWAIN DRAWING DEFENSIVE ASSIGN- MENTS Senior guard Jasbriell Swain has been asked to provide on-the-ball defense for some of the American s best players as of late. Against Louisville, Swain played 12 minutes, spending most of the first half working on Shoni Schimmel. Saturday, she drew the assignment of Keena Mays. Swain played 26 minutes on Saturday, finishing with five points, three rebounds and three assists. SPEAKING OF THE STARTING LINEUP After going through the first 14 games of the year with just three different starting lineups, the Tigers have had six different lineups over the last eight games, either due to injury, disciplinary issues or just trying to get a hot hand into the lineup. That s given Memphis seven different starting lineups this season. Last year, she was known for her ability to drive the ball and score through contact, this year, it s for her work from the three-point line. The next part of her game to get some attention will be defense. She enters the Houston game with 99 career steals, one shy of the century mark. HEARN POSTS DOUBLE-DOUBLE Sophomore guard Ariel Hearn posted a doubledouble in the loss to #4/3 Louisville, Sunday. She finished with 15 points, and added 10 assists. The double-digit assists is a season-high for Hearn and marks the second time in her career she has had 10 or more assists in a game. In her first collegiate game last year, she dished out 12 assists. That s also the last time a Tiger has had double-digit assists in a game. That was also Hearn s second career double-double. Her first was a 23 points, 10-rebound effort in a win over Tennessee Tech. OVERTIME? SURE, WHY NOT? Memphis has played five overtime games already this season, including two double-overtime games. The Tigers are 1-1 in double overtime (both road games) and are 2-1 in overtime games with just one extra session (2-0 at home and 0-1 on the road). Memphis is now 13-12 in overtime games in school history and is 7-3 in overtime under Melissa McFerrin. Wisconsin holds the NCAA record for overtime games in a season with seven in 1999, FYI. FUQUA-BEY EARNS REPEAT AMERICAN ATHLETIC WEEKLY HONOR ROLL Asia Fuqua-Bey was named to The American s weekly honor roll after hitting the game-winning freethrows in overtime vs. No. 23 Rutgers and then leading the Tigers with 18 points in the win over Houston. It was the second time this season for Fuqua-Bey to earn a spot on the American Athletic Conference honor roll. She was also named to the honor roll Dec. 16th. Asia Fuqua-Bey WINNING CLOSE GAMES Head Coach Melissa McFerrin has been telling her young team that Memphis wins close games. Already this season, Memphis has played five overtime games (with a 3-2 record) and has played three one-point decisions (with a 2-1 mark). In Coach McFerrin s six seasons at Memphis, the Tigers are 34-13 in games decided by five or fewer points. That was Rowser s second league Rookie of the Week honor. She earned the league s first-ever Rookie of the Week award in the Tigers regular-season overtime win against East Tennessee State in week one. TIGERS PICKED SIXTH IN AMERICAN PRE- SEASON POLL The Memphis women s basketball team is a member of the American Athletic Conference beginning this year. The Tigers were picked to finish sixth in the preseason poll, behind defending national champions Connecticut, and national runners-up Louisville. USF, Rutgers and SMU round out the preseason top five in the preseason coaches poll. HEARN NAMED TO ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM Sophomore guard Ariel Hearn was named to the all-tournament team at the Paradise Jam tournament after averaging 17.4 points per game in the three-day tournament. Against Texas A&M, Hearn finished with 19 points. She was held to just nine points against Syracuse, but opened up her scoring in the second half of the Texas game, knocking down a career-best five three-point field goals for the second time in the three day tournament and finishing with 21 points. She scored 19 of her 21 points in the second half of the Texas game. RECORD BREAKDOWN Overall Conf.
