Inside: - CanPowerSkate Coaches Clinic Application - Juvenile Judging Clinic Application Clubs Only: - MAP Grant Follow Up Reports Saskatoon to host the 2009 BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships SASKATOON, SK: Skate Canada and BMO Financial Group announced today (December 5 th, 2007) that Saskatoon will host the 2009 BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships. The event will be held Jan. 14 18, 2009 at Credit Union Centre. Skate Canada is excited to bring the 2009 BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships to Saskatoon, said Skate Canada Director of Sponsorship and Marketing, Debbi Wilkes. Figure skating spectators in the city have previously had the opportunity to see World and Olympic medalists in the making at events here. Next year should be no exception as this event is only one year away from the actual naming of the 2010 Winter Olympic team. It will be a true test of our athletes Olympic mettle. As well, invitational competitions within our provincial regions will begin. At this time I want to extend best wishes for personal success to all the skaters attending these competitions. Enjoy every moment! Marilyn The Weber BBQ Shop 1905 Quebec Street, Saskatoon (306) 665-0800

We look forward to welcoming skating fans and future skating stars to Saskatoon for the 2009 BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships, said Ken Segboer, Vice-President, BMO Bank of Montreal, Saskatchewan. This marks the second time Saskatoon will host the Canadian Championships since we began our partnership with Skate Canada in 1997. BMO employees in Saskatoon will devote just as much of their time and energy to this exciting competition as they did at the previous event in 2003. In 2003 Emanuel Sandhu, Jennifer Robinson, and Shae-Lynn Bourne and Victor Kraatz won the Canadian title in their disciplines. Bourne and Kraatz were crowned World Champions a few weeks later in Washington, DC, becoming the first Canadian ice dancers to win a world title. The 10-time Canadian Ice Dance Champions, Bourne & Kraatz, were in Saskatoon for the announcement. This city holds a special place in our hearts, because we won our final Canadian title here, said Shae-Lynn Bourne. The people gave us such a heart-felt response. It was a tremendous send-off in 2003, and we went on to win the world title later that year. Victor Kraatz outlined what it means to compete for a Canadian title. The level of skating at these championships is outstanding, because as an athlete, you are competing for a place on the National Team and at the World Championships. Every athlete who will skate in Saskatoon in 2009 wants the opportunity to represent our country as Canadian champion. We are excited to be hosting the best and brightest Canadian skaters once again in Saskatoon, just five years after hosting it in 2003, said Tourism Saskatoon President and CEO Todd Brandt. This is testament to the strong support shown by Saskatoon for figure skating. It will be just over a year to the 2010 Olympics so expect to see strong competition on the ice and quality performances! Credit Union Centre is very excited to once again host the BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships in January 2009, commented Ken Wood, Executive Director, Credit Union Centre. Saskatchewan has a strong following for the sport of figure skating and this prestigious event is sure to provide them with exciting performances. We look forward to working with Skate Canada along with the local volunteers and organizers to make this event a memorable success. Approximately 150 skaters in women s, men s, pair and ice dance disciplines compete at the senior and junior levels at the BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships. The athletes will vie for spots on the Skate Canada national team, the Skate Canada junior national team and the Canadian teams that will compete at the 2009 ISU World Figure Skating Championships, ISU Four Continents Championships and ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships. This marks the third time Saskatoon will host the Canadian Championships. The city previously held the event in 2003 and 1991. Saskatoon was also the site of the 2001 Skate Canada International ISU Grand Prix. All-event ticket packages for the 2009 BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships will go on sale early in February 2008. Juvenile Judging Clinic We would like to invite you to attend a Juvenile Judging Clinic being held in Saskatoon, March 1 st 2 nd, 2008 in conjunction with the SaskTel Jean Norman Competition. We are very excited about offering this clinic in this format. You will be on site with the competition and have the opportunity to trial both in the 6.0 system and the new CPC system. Following the trialing of the events you will have the opportunity to discuss the event along with the results with feedback from the clinic conductor. You may also want to trail other events at SaskTel Jean Norman at the conclusion of the clinic. This is a great opportunity and a great way to start on your path of judging. We have included a free ticket for you to attend the Sask. Stars of Ice Show on Sat. evening. You will have the chance to see our provincial winners and those who competed at Canadians and Jr. National s in singles, dance and pairs. We have a lot of talent in Saskatchewan and we are proud to showcase them. I hope you can clear your schedules and attend this clinic. I will be in attendance for those who have any questions regarding the process of promotions. Please fill in the application and return by closing date. I would suggest you

make your accommodation plans immediately as Saskatoon is a very busy city. The Sandman Inn, Day s Inn and Bessbourgh are the three hotels where you will get a reduced cost. When making your reservation please tell them it is for the SaskTel Jean Norman Skating Competition for Skate Canada, Sask. Section. We have reduced the cost of the clinic by having the Saskatchewan Section subsidize it. Our officials are the very important to us and it is impertinent that we increase our numbers to keep up with the demand of the skaters. If you have any questions please contact Carla Laevens (Evaluators / Judges Chairperson) at (306)628-3949, email cmlaevens@sasktel.net or the Section Office at (306) 780-9245, email sk.skate@sasktel.net. Want to Hold a High Test Day? Perdue Oasis... "Jewel in the Crown" "..condition of the greens, fairways and Tee boxes...best in Saskatchewan" Score Magazine 2006 Skate Canada Saskatchewan welcomes back SaskTel Skate Canada Saskatchewan would like to welcome SaskTel back as the title sponsor for the 2008 SaskTel Jean Norman Competition. Thank you for supporting skating in Saskatchewan. Aboriginal Coaches and Officials Program (ACOP) Aboriginal Coaches and Officials Program (ACOP) has funding that is available to Aboriginal coaches and officials who would like to attend PSGB hosted NCCP Sport Specific clinics. Funding is available for Old Level One or the new equivalent. Applications are available from the Skate Canada Saskatchewan Office. For more information on this program, please contact Amy Smith, ACOP Coordinator at (306) 975-0865 or Mark Bracken, Manager of Coaching Development at (306) 780-9313. High Test s includes: Senior Silver Free Skate, Dance and Skills Gold Free Skate, Dance and Skills As per Skate Canada rules, a club must first seek approval from the Section Evaluators / Judges Chairperson. Once permission has been granted the Evaluators / Judges Chairperson will assign an evaluator. This means a lot of work for the Evaluators / Judges Chairperson. Therefore, prior to scheduling a High Test Day, please contact the Section Evaluators / Judges Chairperson (Carla Laevens) with your date and name of your evaluator. Don t forget to notify your Regional Coordinator, the Test Day should be open for all skaters within your Region. We encourage clubs to use High Test evaluators for high tests only and bring in another evaluator for low tests. The rationale for this request is two-fold: 1. It would shorten the day for the evaluator(s). 2. The low-test evaluators would receive the opportunity to trial high tests which are needed for promotions. A suggestion would be to secure evaluators from the same area, if possible, so that they may travel together. Traveling together would help reduce costs and is safer in the winter months. This will require more planning on the club s side, but following this rule will provide the most accurate and fair evaluating of the tests for skaters. Please remember to advise the Section Office of your tests days so that they may be advertised on the Section Website so that for surrounding clubs may assist with cost-sharing, etc.
