Saskatchewan Let`s get more kids more active more often. www.saskatchewaninmotion.ca

About the Saskatchewan in motion has prepared the to help teachers and community organizers plan a Winter Games Day in their school or community. We`ve tried to focus on participation of all students and promoting physical activity, fun and knowledge of the sports involved in the Winter Games. Feel free to adapt the games to suit your individual classrooms and students. You`ll note we have not provided answers to the trivia questions. We thought it might be more fun for students to research the answers as part of the preparation for the Saskatchewan Winter Games and the Winter Olympics. About in motion Saskatchewan in motion is a province-wide movement aimed at increasing the physical activity of children and youth. Our vision is that the people of Saskatchewan will be the healthiest, most physically active in Canada. In motion blends provincial, regional and local resources together with strong community leadership. We hope this guide will help you offer your students an opportunity to be involved in a day of in motion fun and activity!

Equipment & Facility Gymnasium or outdoor field area Target (Have students create them using pieces of cardboard and paint.) Bean bags or another throwing device. FUN outdoor alternative: students can make snowballs to throw at the target. Set target diagrams, divide students into teams and have recorders ready. Volunteers start by giving instructions for playing the sport activity. Each team is asked three questions from the Catch the Spirit Trivia. Trivia points are recorded by volunteers and teams are ready to start the sport activity. Play the sport activity. Return score sheet is immediately returned to the Control Center immediately and determine winner. 4. Scoring Individual/team with the most points (hits) wins!! 1 st place receives 10 pts. 2 nd place receives 8 pts. 3 rd place receives 6 pts. 5. Safety 6. Catch the Spirit Trivia (2 points each) In what city did shooting first become an official winter sport activity? Ensure students are all lined up at the throwing line so that no-one gets hit. How far away are the targets placed on the shooting range? How big are the targets that athletes aim at?

Target Toss Related sport: Air Pistol How to Play Lay the cardboard target flat on the floor and designate a throwing line. Divide students into teams of three. Give each student five tries to hit the target. Students retrieve their bean bags and the recorder marks the score. Tally the score for each student. The winner of each team will move on to the next round. You may also tally the team score. Sport Activity Layout Source: www.schoolmasters.com

Sledge Hockey Related sport: Hockey 3. Organization 1. Volunteers One volunteer will be designated to play a referee role for the game At least one volunteer will be needed to count points for each team 2. Equipment & Facility A gymnasium, paved or smooth concrete outdoor covered area Four wheeled flat board scooters Racquet ball racquets or small paddles Several toilet plungers of the same type or brand Medium size rubber ball 2 plastic hockey nets Set up the playing area by placing one hockey net at each end. Give instructions for playing the sport activity. Ask each team three Catch the Spirit Trivia questions. Record trivia points. Play the sport activity. When the game is over, count-up points and declare a winner or winner(s). 4. Scoring 6. Catch the Spirit Trivia (2 points each) Award one point for each goal. The team who receives the most points wins the game. Tournament Scoring 1 st place receives 10 pts. 2 nd place receives 8 pts. 3 rd place receives 6 pts. 4 th place receives 4 pts. 5. Safety Players may use two scooters: one for sitting, and one for their legs if it s more comfortable. Instruct players to watch out for other participants to avoid accidents. Make sure players understand and obey the rules of the game. Make sure players use caution when swinging the racquets or paddles. What year was sledge hockey invented? a) 1965 b) 1972 c) 1961 What city held the Paralympics when sledge hockey was first introduced in 1994 How many athletes are eligible to compete on a sledge hockey team.

Sledge Hockey Related sport: Hockey How to Play Sport Activity Layout The object of the game is to put the rubber ball into the hockey net to score a point. Divide the group into two teams. Distinguish each team with colored jerseys or pinnies Only 6 players (including the goalie) from each team are allowed on the playing area (court) at a one time. Players on each team change out at two minute intervals. Use a half court or half of the gymnasium, allowing multiple games to be played at the same time for tournament play. The game starts with two players at the centre of the court. A volunteer drops the rubber ball from a low height between two players at centre court. Players must let the ball bounce once before touching it with the racquet. Players who have possession of the rubber ball use the racquet to handle or pass it. Plungers can be used to push off the floor to propel the players forward. Players must pass the ball at least three times to at least three different players before shooting at the net. Players can steal the ball when it s passed to another player or when a shot is taken on the net. A goal is scored when the rubber ball crosses into the hockey net. After a goal, the goalie from the other team throws the ball back into the playing area or players start over at center court. The game continues until a volunteer signals to stop playing. Suggestions Players can choose whether or not to use the plunger to help them move around.

Skate the Gym Relay Related sport: Figure Skating 3. Organization 1. Volunteers One volunteer to organize participants. Additional volunteers could be positioned at the end line and encourage each participant. One volunteer should remain at the start/finish line. 2. Equipment & Facility Should be performed in a gymnasium or empty classroom. Four pairs of wool slippers (must be capable of sliding on the gymnasium floor). Set up the equipment. Give instructions for the activity. Ask each team three questions from the Catch the Spirit Sport Trivia. Record trivia points. Play the sport activity. When the relay is over, count points and announce winners. 6. Catch the Spirit Trivia (2 points each) 4. Scoring 1 st place receives 10 pts. 2 nd place receives 8 pts. 3 rd place receives 6 pts. 4 th place receives 4 pts. 5. Safety All team members should stand at the start line waiting for their turn. Leave adequate space in between each team. Relay begins at the start signal and ends when the last team crosses the finish line. True or False: No figure skater has ever landed a jump with four rotations (spins). Which is not a form of figure skating? a) Pairs b) Synchornized c) Distinguished d) Ice Dancing True of False: The blade of a figures skate only has one edge.

Skate the Gym Relay Related sport: Figure Skating Sport Activity Layout How to Play Divide the group into four even teams. Line teams up single file behind the waiting line. On the start signal, the first skater in each team moves to start line and puts on the wool slippers (SKATES)!! Participants move to the end of the gym, wearing their slippers and pushing their feet as if skating on ice. NO running, walking allowed. Participants MUST keep head up and hold their arms out to the side. Once the participant has reached the end of the gym they must execute a figure skating move (spin, jump or spiral). Participants turn around and head back to their team. Participants tag the next player in line and the relay continues. Each participant should get a turn to participate (if one team has fewer participants, one will go twice.) Suggestions If you have any figure skaters in the group, they may be willing to demonstrate skating in the slippers and performing a spiral, spin and jump. Add more lines and ask participants to perform a different skill at each line.

1.Volunteers Run & Throw Biathlon Related Sport: Biathlon 2 volunteers for each zone 2. Equipment & Facility Gymnasium or outdoor field area Marker cones Hula-hoop or other target (could be a tree, something painted in the snow, etc.) Bean bags or something else to throw; FUN alternative: students make snowballs when they enter the throwing range. 3. Run & Throw Biathlon related sport: Biathlon How to Play Sport Activity Layout Put the first racer from each team at the start line, with other participants lined up behind them. When the whistle blows, the first group of students run/ski/snowshoe once around the 200 meter loop. After completing the loop, students enter the throwing range. They may use any lane. Competitors have five attempts to throw the bean bag/snowball at the target. Once throws are complete, record number of hits while competitors run to tag the next member of their team. Repeat the process with each participant. The relay is complete when all students have passed the finish line. Variations Have each student complete the running loop three times. Snowshoe, ski, hop, wheel, roll or skip around the loop. Winter Games Day Supplement

Pylon Curling Related Sport: Curling 3. Organization 1. Volunteers One volunteer to organize participants. Additional volunteers could be positioned at the end line to encourage each participant. One volunteer should remain at the start/finish line. 2. Equipment & Facility Should be performed in a gymnasium. A ball for each player. (Could use volleyballs for team A and basketballs for team B) Three pylons for each game. Volunteers set up the equipment. Give instructions for the activity. Each team is asked three questions from the Catch the Spirit Trivia. Record trivia points. When the game is finished count points and declare a winner. Return score sheet to control centre immediately. 4. Scoring o The team with the most balls in the playing area, get to count their points. o Each ball counts one point. o The number of points each ball is worth depends on where it lies within the marked plying area. Balls may be either worth 1, 2 or 3 points. o Use lines in between the 2 and 3 point pylons to establish to indicate points zones. (ie: if a ball is past the line behind the 2 point pylon, participants would get 3 points). 5. Safety As each player rolls the ball two other players should walk alongside the ball to keep it in the playing area. Leave adequate space in between each team. Participants should exercise caution as they roll their ball to the opposite end of the gym. 6. Catch the Spirit Trivia Which Country did curling originate in? a) Canada b) Scotland c) Holland How many ends are there in a game of curling? What is the first person to throw a rock called? Winter Games Day Supplement

Pylon Curling Related sport: Curling How to Play The object of the game is to try and get your ball closest to the furthest pylon. Divide the group into teams of four. Teams play each other two at a time. Teams determine who will be first, second, third and fourth (SKIP). Flip a coin to determine which team rolls the ball first. The game begins at the start signal and ends when last ball crosses the finish line. The first player rolls his or her ball down the gym trying to reach the furthest pylon. The opposite team may try to knock opposition balls out of the playing area. A ball that s knocked out of the playing area is removed and no longer playable. Teams alternate turns. Each player takes a turn rolling the ball. Skips should stand near the three point pylon After all players have rolled a ball, the team with the most balls in the playing area get to count their points. Balls remaining in the farthest zone at the end of the game are worth three points. Balls in the middle zone are worth two points and the closest zone is worth one. LEGEND Sport Activity Layout May use the volleyball court lines as each team s playing area. Whatever area you determine to use as the playing area, be sure that it is clear to players before beginning the game. Suggestions Clearly identify the playing area Use lines in between the 2 and 3 point pylons to establish point zones (ie: if a ball is past the line behind the 2 point pylon, participants would get 3 points).

Bumps and Jumps Related Sport: Skiing 1. Volunteers One volunteer to organize participants Four volunteers to assist with course design, gate keeping and judging Gate keepers ensure course stays in shape. Judges ensure jumps are completed cleanly and signal next participant to begin. 2. Equipment & Facility Can be adapted for indoor or outdoor play. 8 cones/pylons for start gates 4 large obstacles (snow piles, large mats, box horse) A variety of small obstacles (bean bags, pylons, mats, hula hoops, ropes etc.) to prepare 4 identical courses 4 spring boards or mini trampolines 4 large crash mats 3. Organization Volunteers set four identical courses. Volunteers start by giving instruction on navigating the course. Each team is asked three questions from the Catch the Spirit Trivia. Volunteers record trivia points and teams are ready to start. Place a volunteer at the crash mat at the end of each course to ensure safety and signal the next participant upon the completion of a clean jump. When all participants have completed course, volunteers count points and declare winners. Immediately return score sheet to Control Centre. 4. Scoring 1 st place receives 10 pts. 2 nd place receives 8 pts. 3 rd place receives 6 pts. Last place receives 4 pts. 5. Safety Ensure all obstacles are soft, safe and easily maneuvered. Secure a large crash mat at the finish line to ensure safe landings. Additional mats around the rebounder will ensure mishaps are well managed. 6. Catch the Spirit Trivia What two types of skiing are done in the Saskatchewan Winter Games? True or False: Cross-country skiing is known as a Nordic Event. What equipment do you need to use to go skiing?

Bumps and Jumps How to Play Divide the group in four teams. The object of the event is to make it through the course fastest and in style! The course will be full of obstacles, so there are plenty of opportunities for mishaps, fun and laughter. Line up each team single file behind one of four starting gates (two cones/pylons) On the start signal the first participant in each group moves forward to the start gate. At go! the first participant completes the course as quickly as possible. Once they land a clean jump at the end of the course, the judge signals the next participant to start. Award points to each team once all participants have completed the course The course The course will have three phases representing the warm up, the mogul run and the aerial event. 1. Warm up: Skiiers warm up by climbing the mountain to survey the course. Build a small mountain (use snow outdoors, or indoor climbing apparatus, mats or other equipment). Participants must maneuver themselves up and over the mountain. 2. Mogul run: Using a variety of equipment, build an obstacle course that encourages participants to crouch low (use tunnels, V folded mats, limbo poles, pick up bean bags), reach high (use climbing apparatus, ropes), jump (hang a flag overhead that must be touched). Use very small obstacles like low poles, hula hoops or small mats to jump over), and move side to side (have participants jump side to side over a rope). 3. Big Air!: As a big finish, participants will move to a rebounder (mini tramp) or spring board. They will jump two times and then jump with an aerial trick into a large crash mat. Participants will need to land a jump cleanly (no falls) before the volunteer judge signals the next participant to begin. Safe and popular tricks Spread Eagle Participants will jump with legs spread wide apart to each side Helicopter Participants jump while turning 360 degrees Tail Grab Participants jump and reach behind them to touch the heels of their feet Daffy Participants jump with legs spread wide apart one front and one back Back Scratcher Participants jump and bend their knees behind them touching feet to butt. Suggestions Allow a few minutes prior to the event for a jump demonstration and practice. Demonstrate jumps appropriate in difficulty for the age of the participants
