wind speed (knots) direction (degrees) Yet Another Large Fleet Wednesday Wonders Winter Series 2018 Race 3 Plus Summer Series 2017-18 Trophy Results (18 Apr 2018) Forty five yachts took place in the third race of the winter series which is probably a record for any WW winter or summer series. It would be naive not to think the weather had something to do with the good participation. There was a succinct and accurate forecast by BOM Variable winds about knots; seas below 0.5 metres and mostly sunny. Observations showed a SSE to southerly breeze averaging knots for the afternoon. WW Winter Series 2016 Race 3 Wind Speed & Direction 16 14 12 8 6 4 2 0 1300 1330 1400 1430 1500 1530 1600 1630 1700 1730 Wind Speed 7 8 9 11 12 7 12 9 Gusts 9 11 11 12 12 13 12 9 14 12 Direction 157.5 157.5 180 180 180 180 180 157.5 157.5 157.5 time 360 315 270 225 180 135 90 45 0 Although there was a southerly breeze it was a northerly start which took the fleet around the 9.8 nautical mile course 24. About 46% of the course was downwind. MARIBEL (Graham Fraser) won Start of the Day with a perfect start. There were three new podium finishers. VIVE LA VIE (Mark Sutherland) crossed the line in first place. In second place was MIDNIGHT MAGIC (Bernadette Moore) and FIREFOX (Kim Beveridge & Howard Davis) finished third. It wasn t the best outcome for yachts with handicaps 40 minutes and above. Only WIND SPEED (Les Browne) was among the first 15 yachts to finish. Ten early starters were among the 15 early finishers. There were three separate ties. LEBROK (Theo Korbel) and FUN & GAMES (Alan Edwards) tied for 7 th place. ALIBI (Denis Hambleton) and CASSANDRA of MELBOURNE (Bob Reeves) tied for 22 nd place whilst RAZZLE DAZZLE (Andrew Stopp) and VINDALOO (John Taylor). tied for 28 th place. The Beneteau First 50 CARPE DIEM sailed the course in the fastest elapsed time. The range of elapsed times was 52 minutes 8 seconds, a little below the 55 minute range of handicaps. Although VANTAGE (Darren Hunter) finished in 41 st place she moved to the top of the aggregate replacing last week s winner VINDALOO

VIVE LA VIE has completed all three races in this series so far. She finished 44 th out of 45 in race 1; finished 37 th in race 2 and won this race after a one minute handicap reduction. VIVE LA VIE started the race from 4 th place 0 seconds late for her 5 minute handicap. At the completion of the first 4 legs she had moved into 2 nd place only 30 seconds behind the leader. She sailed the last 3 legs of the course in 52 minutes 49 seconds and was first across the finish line at 15:57:49 1 minute 2 seconds ahead of MIDNIGHT MAGIC in second place. VIVE LA VIE completed 12 races in the summer series and recorded 1 top ten finish a win in race 20. In this series she is currently 21 st place up from 41 st after race 2. MIDNIGHT MAGIC completed 13 races in the summer series; had 1 win in the series and finished 41 st in the aggregate. She is off to a better start this series after completing 2 races she is 9 th in the aggregate. MIDNIGHT MAGIC started this race from 3 rd place 61 seconds late for her 4 minute handicap. She completed the first 4 legs of the race in 1:29:29 and rounded number 4 for the first time ahead of the fleet. MIDNIGHT MAGIC was overtaken during the final 3 legs of the race and after sailing the entire course in 2:24:51she crossed the finish line at 15:58:51. FIREFOX is another yacht that has completed all three races in the series and she has improved her finish position in every race. However this is her first podium finish this series, with her previous podium finish a 2 nd in the final race of the summer series. FIREFOX started from 13 th place only 5 seconds late for her 25 minute handicap. She was in 8 th place after completion of the first 4 legs and continued her move through the fleet to finish 3 rd only 7 seconds behind MIDNIGHT MAGIC. FIREFOX sailed the course in 2:03:58 and crossed the finish line at 15:58:58. She started the race 57 seconds before PIZAZZ (P Martyn & R Kemp) extended this margin to 18 minutes 21 seconds at the end of the race. FIREFOX is 12 th in the aggregate.

Twenty yachts started within seconds or less of their handicaps. Two started too soon and were penalised 5 minutes. This proved especially costly for BACARDI (Martin Power) who lost 17 places. It was not as costly for MAGIC (Phil Spry Bailey) who lost 9 places. MARIBEL became the second yacht this series to record a perfect start. By coincidence, ARABESQUE (Milton Green) and ALCHEMIST (Michael Manson) both recorded this same time. Their handicaps were 32 and 40 minutes respectively. CARPE DIEM became the third yacht in three races to record the fastest elapsed time. By The Way It is understood Paul Mentiplay is the handicapper for the winter series and will be assisted by Daniel Edwards. Neither Paul nor Daniel are new to Wednesday Wonders. Paul skippers SECOND NATURE on Wednesday s which finished 5 th in the summer aggregate and runner up in the Shebessa Shield. He is a previous WW handicapper. Daniel is also a dedicated Wonder successfully sailing WHITE NOISE in both bay and offshore races. WHITE NOISE finished th in the summer aggregate. Here s hoping for a good set of numbers.

The skipper said the instructions were written on the deck but I can t see them can you? It s all about avoiding parallax error. When the winch grinders head is in line with the tree on the shore then we are dead on the mark. She looks good in the picture but the ALCHEMIST didn t quite have the right formula to turn things into gold on this occasion. She finished 42 nd but it was her first race of the series. Could the mystery ingredient do the trick? Sailing on an even keel is a good way to enjoy Wednesday Wonders. Photos by Bruce Parry
