T e x t m e s s a g e, TIPYORK + your message, and send it to CRIMES(274637) 19th Annual Wayne Snooks Memorial Golf Classic - FORE! As in past years, we were overwhelmed with the support we have received from local corporations like Scotiabank our event sponsor, to the vast amount of companies that sponsored all other aspects of the event. Congratulations to our winning foursome from Avnet/ IBM Canada comprised of Geoff Gunton, Pete McNair, Mary Pennino and Dave Mountain with a score of 12. For the first time ever we had a hole in one. Unfortunately it was not on our Twin Hills Ford hole in one sponsored hole. Almost $50,000 was raised this year to help Crime Stoppers of York Region continue being one of the leaders in the province and nationally. We would like to thank all of our corporate sponsors along with all of the individual golfers that came out to support our very worthy cause. Together we can continue to make York Region one of the safest communities to live, work and play. Continued on page 2. Each rider enjoyed a sit down meal and wine tasting after their two day ride. Congratulations to Garnet Bannister who was the winner of the Sony HDTV courtesy of Future Shop and was also the highest pledge recipient for the event. We would also like to thank the York Region based sponsors, JBS Graphic Communications and Bike Sports along with the York Regional Police Auxiliary and volunteers. Without their support the event would not have been the success that it was. ONTARIO ASSOCIATION OF CRIME STOPPERS CONFERENCE The annual Ontario Association of Crime Stoppers provincial training conference was hosted this year by Windsor and Essex County Crime Stoppers. It was held from June 12th to the 14th where the delegates were trained on the latest issues surrounding Crime Stoppers programs across the province and the country. This years conference was kicked off with the parade of Crime Stoppers vehicles through the downtown streets of Windsor to the Windsor Police Training Facility where the lectures took place. All of the delegates were involved in interactive workshops some of which were about legal issues, branding, marketing, grant applications, board governance and bylaws. During the conference provincial awards were given out and this year Crime Stoppers of York Region won the best Newsletter Award and for the second year in a row the best Special Project Award. The special project that was submitted was an information leaflet about Crime Stoppers that had Cantonese as the primary language on it along with one of our Crime Stoppers handcuff pins. These leaflets were handed out to Chinese business people that attended an information session with the police in October 2009 when there was a rash of Chinese restaurant robberies. While at the conference we had the opportunity of hoisting the Memorial Cup which was won by the Windsor Spitfires the past two years. CRIME STOPPERS HUMAN TRAFFICKING INITIATIVE On May 28th, 2010 the Central Ontario Crime Prevention Association held its quarterly meeting at the Community Safety Village in Whitchurch-Stouffville. This meeting saw a record number of members attend as the key note speaker was Timea Nagy, the Executive Director from Walk With Me. The meeting was attended by police officers from across the Greater Toronto area and Central Ontario along with many civilian support workers that deal with human trafficking victims first hand on our streets. The informative session educated front line workers about the signs to look for in recognizing a human trafficking victim. These victims are usually quite vulnerable and will not come forward on their own as they fear reprisal from their handlers. Timea also shared her personal story as a human trafficking survivor. She was tricked into coming to Canada as a nanny and was forced her to work as a sex slave right here in York Region at the former Fantasia strip club. Human trafficking is now becoming more of a home grown problem as now many girls get tricked into the profession that have grown up right here in the GTA. After the presentation, Timea was presented with a plaque of appreciation from Crime Stoppers for all her work in educating front line workers on the issues surrounding human trafficking. Page 4
