ZIPP VUMAQUAD INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS CAUTION All Zipp Crank and BB products should be installed by a professional bicycle mechanic using the appropriate tools. Zipp assumes no responsibility for damages or injury related to improperly installed components. CRITICAL DETAILS:. The VumaQuad is designed only for use with the supplied bottom bracket components. Zipp makes no claims to the dimensional accuracy or tolerance control of non-zipp components and therefore cannot be responsible for damage or injury resulting from mixing Zipp and non-zipp components. This crank set features a 0mm bottom bracket spindle and bearings that are not compatible with other bottom bracket systems.. The VumaQuad is designed to have 4.5mm chain line.. The VumaQuad has a 0mm bolt circle for use with 4-bolt 0mm BCD chain rings only. The Zipp chain rings are designed for optimal performance with both 9 and 0 speed systems. The chain rings come pre-installed to the proper torque of 9-0 Nm (80-88 in-lbs) using four bolts. 4. The VumaQuad utilizes a self extracting bolt on the drive side. There is no need to use a crank extractor to remove the crank set; simply unscrew the crank attachment bolt against the extractor cap until the crank arm comes free from the BB spindle. 5. The non-drive side arm is permanently attached to the spindle with a spindle cap. Attempting to remove either of them will damage the crank set and void the warranty. 6. Do not use chemical cleaning agents on the crank set or BB shell. They may cause damage to the components and void the warranty. English BB Shell Configuration 4 5 6 7 8 9 0. Drive Side Arm. Aluminum Fourth Chain Ring Bolt Spacer. Small Chain Ring 4. Aluminum Fourth Chain Ring Bolt INSTALLATION: Read all of the installation instructions before beginning assembly.. Verify that the supplied BB bearing cups (6 & 8) match the thread (English or Italian) of your BB shell (7). The BB shell should have clean threads and be properly faced on both sides to remove any paint or burrs. The English threaded BB shell should be a maximum of 68mm wide. The Italian threaded BB shell should be a maximum of 70mm wide. If the BB shell is wider than the prescribed dimension, the bearing will have excessive side load causing premature were and increased friction. If the BB shell has not been properly faced on both sides, the bearings may be misaligned causing excessive drag and accelerated wear.. The bearing cups (6 & 8) come with the bearings installed. Apply a high quality bicycle bearing grease or anti-seize to the threads of the bearing cups.. Thread the drive side bearing cup (6) into the BB shel. The English drive side cup bearing cup (6) has left hand threads. Both Italian bearing cups have right hand threads. Torque the cup to 40-45 Nm (54-98 in-lbs) using a Zipp bearing cup tool. 4. Thread the non-drive side bearing cup (8) into the BB shell. The English non-drive side has right hand threads. Torque the cup to 40-45 Nm (54-98 in-lbs) using a Zipp bearing cup tool. 5. For the English BB shell only, slide an aluminum spacer (0) onto the BB spindle () until it is against the shoulder on the non-drive side with the raised boss of the spacer facing away from the shoulder. No spacer is used on the non-drive side for the Italian BB shell.

6. Apply a high quality bicycle bearing grease to the BB spindle () and slide it with the non-drive side arm () through the non-drive side bearing cup (8) continuing through the drive side bearing cup (6). It may be necessary to use a small non-marring rubber mallet to lightly tap the spindle through the bearings. 7. Apply a high quality bicycle bearing grease or anti-seize to the threads and spline of the BB spindle (). 8. The Zipp Compact Crank drive side arm () comes with the aluminum extractor cap (4), steel extractor cap washer (5), aluminum spindle bolt (6), and steel spindle bolt washer (7) in place. If you have removed the extractor cap or bolt for any reason, you must ensure that the hardened steel washers are replaced under the bolt and extractor cap during reassembly. The washer with smaller inner diameter belongs between the crank bolt and extractor cap. The washer with the larger inner diameter belongs between the bolt and spindle. Failure to use these hardened steel washers with the extractor cap will damage the crank set and void the warranty. The extractor cap should be installed using a pin spanner wrench. 9. For the English BB shell only, place an aluminum spacer (4) over the BB spindle () with the raised boss facing the bearing (5). For the Italian BB shell place a hardened steel washer against the bearing. If there is side to side play once the crank set is fully installed and all of the fasteners are tightened to the proper torque, remove the drive side arm and place an additional steel washer against the bearing. Repeat this procedure until there is no side to side play in the crank set. 0. Place the wave spring () over the BB spindle () against the aluminum spacer (4) on the English BB shell or against the hardened steel washer on the Italian BB shell with the lobes of the wave spring oriented as shown. Wave Spring should contact here exactly as shown when non-drive arm is hanging down as shown. If the English BB shell configuration has side to side play once the crank set is fully installed and all of the fasteners are tightened to the proper torque, place a hardened steel washer () over the BB spindle () against the wave spring (). Skip this step for the Italian BB shell. 4

. Align the drive side crank arm () opposite the non-drive side arm () and with the BB spindle spline by pushing the arm against the spindle () and rotating to feel when the crank is properly indexed. Begin to thread the spindle bolt (6) into the spindle loosely making sure of proper alignment. Failure to align the crank arm and BB spindle can damage the crank set. Installation error will not be covered under warranty.. Use a 0 mm hex key to tighten the drive side crank arm () onto the spindle (). The crank arm will bottom out on the shoulder/spindle end before torque is achieved. Use a torque wrench to tighten the crank bolt to 4-4 Nm (5-0 ft-lbs). 4. Check the crank bolt (6) after the first 50-00 km of use to ensure it has not loosened. Then check the crank bolt every six months to ensure proper torque is maintained. CRANK REMOVAL:. The non-drive side crank arm and permanent spindle cap cannot be removed from the spindle. Attempting to do so will damage the crank set and void the warranty.. The Zipp Compact Crank utilizes a self extracting bolt on the drive side which have an aluminum cap threaded into the 5xmm threads in the arm. There is no need to use a crank extractor to remove the crank set; simply unscrew the crank attachment bolt against the extractor cap until the crank arm comes free from the BB spindle.. Slide the BB spindle out of the non-drive side bearing cup. It may be necessary to use a small nonmarring rubber mallet to lightly tap the spindle from the drive side while pulling from the non-drive side with your hand. 4. Unscrew the drive side bearing cup from the BB shell using a Zipp bearing cup tool. 5. Unscrew the non-drive side bearing cup from the BB shell using a Zipp bearing cup tool. 6. The bearings should not be removed from the bearing cups. Attempting to do so will damage the bearings/cups and void the warranty. CHAIN RINGS: The Zipp Compact Crank set comes with the chain rings already installed. If you must remove them or wish to replace them you must be careful to properly align the chain rings before re-installation. The chain rings should be located with the print facing away from the bicycle frame and the alignment indicators should be aligned with the arm. Zipp chain ring bolts require no special tools. One 5mm and one 6mm hex key are all that is required to properly install the chain ring bolts. Assemble all four bolts finger tight making sure to capture the 4mm aluminum spacer between the chain rings for the fourth bolt position on the crank arm. Tighten all chain ring bolts to 9-0 Nm (80-88 in-lbs). The three chain ring bolts threaded into the small chain ring will require the 6mm hex key. The fourth chain ring bolt threaded into the arm will require the 5mm hex key. WARNING Bolt torque specifications should be checked a minimum of times per year. During this time, also inspect all parts for damage, visible cracks, or chips. All components should be inspected thoroughly after any crash or accident. If any damage, cracks, chips, stress marks, or discoloration is visible, these products must be replaced immediately and not used any further. Failure to do so may result in serious injury. WARRANTY This product is guaranteed for year against defects in materials and workmanship. Warranty is for original owner only and proof of purchase is required for any warranty claim. Product modification of any kind, including but not limited to drilling, filing, grinding, painting, any attempt to remove weight, or change compatibility will immediately void warranty.
