Thoreau s Journey West with Corinne H. Smith June 21-25, 2018 TOUR ITINERARY: Thursday, June 21: Arrive in Bloomington, MN Arrive in Bloomington, Minnesota to begin your five-day tour. Check into your hotel and have free time on your own this evening. Friday, June 22: Treaty Site History Center, Fort Ridgely & Lower Sioux Agency This morning after breakfast, board your motorcoach to your first stop, the Treaty Site History Center, where you will explore the stories of Nicollet County s first inhabitants; the Dakota people, explorers, traders, and settlers. The interaction between these people laid the historical groundwork for the signing of the 1851 Treaty of Traverse des Sioux, signed here in July of 1851 that ceded 24 million acres of Dakota land to the U.S. government and opened the land to new settlers and westward expansion. Your next stop will be to Fort Ridgely. Built in 1853 as a police station to keep peace as settlers poured into the former Dakota lands, it withstood several attacks in the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862 and became a training ground for Civil War recruits. Then, it s on to the Lower Sioux Agency. On June 17, 1861 Thoreau and his companion Horace Mann, Jr. traveled on the steamer Frank Steele up the Minnesota River and arrived at the Lower Sioux Agency to observe the granting of annuities to the Sioux. This evening enjoy dinner at Emma Krumbee s Bakery & Restaurant. Hotel: TBD (Breakfast, Dinner) Saturday, June 23: Minnehaha Regional Park, Lake Calhoun, Fort Snelling & Sunset Dinner Cruise After breakfast this morning, board your motorcoach for another day of exploring. Your first stop of the day will be a visit to the Minnehaha Regional Park, one of Minneapolis oldest and most popular parks. Thoreau visited the Minnehaha Falls during his month long trip in May 1861. It features a majestic 53-foot waterfall, limestone bluffs, and river overlooks. Next, you will stop at Lake Calhoun. Thoreau stayed here from June 5-14 at the private boarding home of Mrs. Hamilton, exploring what was, at that time, the relatively wild terrain of the area. Later in the afternoon, you will have free time to visit St. Anthony Main for lunch on your own. You can take a stroll along the Mississippi River or do some shopping. Next, visit historic Fort Snelling which was built in the early 1820 s. Thoreau visited Fort Snelling in May 1861 when he arrived via the steamboat Frank Steele. Fort Snelling is a great place to learn about military history from before the Civil War through World War II, fur trade history, slavery in Minnesota, and much more. Its location, at the junction of the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers, has been significant for centuries to many American Indian communities. The last stop of the day will be a cruise up the mighty Mississippi River on a classic riverboat while taking in the beautiful scenery, gentle breezes and watching the sun set across the Minnesota sky. (Breakfast, Dinner) Fort Snelling
Barn Bluff Sunday, June 24: Barn Bluff, Red Wing Shoe Co. Museum & Mall of America This morning after breakfast, board your motorcoach to your first stop at Barn Bluff, one of the best known natural features along the upper Mississippi River. Then, it s on to the Red Wing Shoe Company Museum. Red Wing Shoe Company celebrated their centennial anniversary by crafting a size 638 ½ D boot which resides in the Red Wing Flagship Shoe Store in downtown Red Wing, Minnesota. Visit the museum and have some time for shopping. Later, enjoy free time at the Mall of America, with over 520 shops full of tax-free shopping and 50 restaurants full of delicious food.
