Selke Trophy as the NHL s top defensive forward, John Madden, 43, was named head coach of the defending Calder Cup Champion Cleveland Monsters by the Columbus Blue Jackets on August 29th following the departure of Monsters head coach Jared Bednar, who was hired in mid-august as head coach of the NHL s Colorado Avalanche. Madden registered 165 goals, 340 points, 219 penalty minutes and a +20 rating in 898 career NHL appearances for the New Jersey Devils, Chicago Blackhawks, Minnesota Wild and Florida Panthers spanning 13 seasons from 1998 to 2012. Madden helped the Devils claim the 2000 and 2003 Stanley Cups before again hoisting hockey s Holy Grail in 2010 with Chicago. A Toronto, Ontario native, Madden spent the past three seasons as an assistant coach with Florida and in 2016-17, enters his first season as a head coach at any level. Petersen previously served as an Assistant Coach for the AHL s Springfield Falcons in 2014-15 under current Monsters Head Coach Jared Bednar. Prior to his coaching career, Petersen enjoyed a 14-year professional playing career as a forward, including 398 career NHL games played spanning parts of ten seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Edmonton Oilers and Dallas Stars from 2001-2012. Steve McCarthy, Assistant Coach A former first-round selection by the Chicago Blackhawks (23rd overall) in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, Trail, British Columbia native Steve McCarthy enters his first season in professional coaching with the Monsters in 2016-17. A member of the Monsters 2016 Calder Cup Championship team, McCarthy logged 302 career NHL appearances as a defenseman for the Blackhawks, Vancouver Canucks and Atlanta Thrashers during a professional playing career that spanned 16 seasons from 2000-2016 and also featured stops in the AHL, KHL and ECHL, along with stints in the top Finnish and Swiss leagues. Darryl Seward, Video Coach A Newfoundland native, Darryl Seward returns to the Monsters in 2016-17 for his second season as Cleveland s Video Coach and fourth season in the AHL, following stints with the Springfield Falcons (2014-15) and Syracuse Crunch (2012-13). Prior to his professional coaching career, Seward served as an Assistant Coach for the QMJHL s Moncton Wildcats for four major junior seasons from 2008-2012. LATEST TRANSACTIONS FLURRY OF ACTIVITY: In the past two weeks, the Monsters have endured the seventh NHL call-up to LW Markus Hannikainen, the recall and assignment of both of the team s top two goaltenders, Anton Forsberg and Joonas Korpisalo, the recall and assignment of D Dean Kukan for the first time this season and the signing to a PTO of sixth-year LW Joe Devin on Thursday. ACTING LIKE AN ALL-STAR: A 2017 AHL All- Star, G Anton Forsberg currently ranks second league-wide in save percentage (.925) and eighth in goals-against average (2.28). ENJOYING THE WILD: The Monsters roster currently boasts only one player, injured Monsters RW Daniel Zaar, scoring at a point-per-game pace against the Wild this season (3 GP, 3-1-4). TRIGGER MAN: Wild RW Christoph Bertschy currently ranks tied for third among AHL rookies with 102 shots on goal so far this season. PULKKINEN S PROWESS: Iowa RW and leading scorer Teemu Pulkkinen is the only player on the Iowa roster scoring at a point-per-game or better pace vs. the Monsters this year.
