Hi Everyone, Editor s Note Good news! Not only do we have a postal service (! ) again but we are catching up on the backlog of the New Spots at last. With Mercia being voted our Vice President and undertaking to sort out the Registrations, she has handed over her Co-Editor portfolio to Mandy Serdyn. I am really happy that Mandy accepted and as you will see from this Edition she has given our mag a fresh new look!!! Year s ago when Council voted for the Champion Stallion and Mare to be put on the cover of the News Spot.. my vote was for a fun, good photo. Showing the versatility of our breed. Mandy s choice ticks all the boxes! The National Show results and AGM write up will be in the January edition, so we have put together a more eclectic mag for you, with a distinctively Cape flavour! We are so thankful for the lovely rain, the parched earth in this photo says it all! Enjoy! Greetings, Claire Emily & Alpha Wap s Rockafella watching the on-coming storm 2

President s report Dear AHBBSA Members A lot has happened since my last report that will affect your Society. For some time we have realised that our costly use of the Secretariat was no better for us than the service some of us members did before we changed. We have tried so hard to make it work but things such as registrations, billing members for services etc were getting further and further behind. We decided to break away from them before our bank balance was completely used up. So now we are back to 2 yrs ago and we will try to get things back to the standard they were then. This will need your help by settling the accounts you recieve as promptly as you are able. We are losing two valuable Council members this year as George has decided he needs to spend more time with his family and Maggie also decided it s been long enough now. That means your Council is changing quite fast. Our Championship Show has been held and as I am sure those that attended will agree it was a great success. Thank you all who attended, you made it the success it was. As for the entrants, thank you for all the trouble and effort you put into it. The judges were really impressed with the quality, preparation, handling and riding of the horses and ponies shown. Even the timing was better because of the co-operation of the entrants, Ros on Friday and Bridgette on Saturday & Sunday, our gate stewards along with the rest of the show helpers. In the end we finished everything in sensible time. What was even better, nearly everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. The New Calendars are out and as usual they are great. Thanks George. Mercia is handling the sales this year so please contact her for yours. I am looking forward to seeing many of you at our AGM and Awards Evenings. Blanket Cover Vriendelike Groete, Don Cropper Jou President 4

Blanket Cover Oct 2014 We are pleased to welcome some new Ordinary Members (Non Breeders) who have joined since July. (1) Yvonne Ghemo from Halfway House, Gauteng, (2) C. Liebenberg from Ifafi, Gauteng, (3) B. Mc Lean from Randburg, Gauteng, (4) J van Rensburg from Wellington, Western Cape. We hope they will take great pleasure from their Appaloosa horses in whatever discipline they choose to participate in, and especially when training and enjoying outrides. These are truly special horses with great personality. Calendars: Unfortunately the postal strike is not helpful to us in this and any other respect. Our calendars which should have been sent out as soon as you ordered them will now have to be collected in person at Shows or from one of our Council members, at least until this strike is over. Calendars can be ordered from Mercia Smith, and there will be some available at the Shows and the AGM. The price is R70 for 2014,plus R20 if posted. Secretariat: As we published in a Blitz News Council has decided that we have to terminate the services of the Secretariat. This decision was not taken lightly. The work will fall to Council until we have sorted out the problems still existing regarding Registrations and transfers. This is a very big task as those of us who have been involved over the years are only too well aware of. We know that we will get your cooperation and will do our best to sort out the remaining issues quickly. Email addresses: A continuing problem is the lack of information regarding changed addresses. This results in members not getting statements and invoices, which then has an effect on the Society finances. We urge you to check that we have a correct email address for you so that we can send you all the relevant updates about the AHBSSA. Contact Ros Nightingale ahbssa@gmail.com, who will be taking over the secretary role after the AGM. Heritage Centre: George Contos, Claire Amm and Jandre Boshoff have been involved in setting up a Heritage centre for the AHBSSA, as outlined in Blitz News and elsewhere in this publication. Thanks to them for the work involved and the enthusiasm for this project. Council Secretary: Ros Nightingale has had to do most of the work for Council this year, with regard to the duties of secretary, as I (Maggie Riley) fell off a borrowed horse and consequently, with some stretched nerves, have limited use of my right hand. Taking the Facebook sites or AHBSSA and the AHBSSA Showing page by Ros: Showing: https:// www.facebook.com/groups/445160272254081/; and AHBSSA: https:// www.facebook.com/groups/1439747282954459/. 5

Blanket Cover Oct 2014 Continued. AGM: All information will have been sent to members for whom we have correct email addresses on the system, and is also published on the website for those without email addresses. Awards Dinner: This year we will have a very special Awards Dinner after the AGM at the Parys Showground. This will be convenient for those staying over and also for those in Gauteng living close enough to come through for the event. We hope for a really good turnout for this. Bookings and payment are to be made directly with the venue Carol Ann 079 477 4416. Cost R150 for dinner, drinks to your own account. They have a good bar venue. Thank You. I will be leaving Council after this AGM. Many thanks to all of the friends I have made through the Society, who have kept cheerful counsel when things have been tough and with whom I have had shared many laughs. I know the friendships will last and I will remain a member of the AHBSSA for many years to come. Maggie Riley October 2014. This is the last time that will have our blanket cover from Maggie Riley. We are ever so grateful for years of service, but we know that we still hear from her in the years to come. Enjoy your well-deserved retirement Maggie, we are honoured to have had you as our Council Secretary. 6

Breed History British Spotted Pony The British Spotted Pony is an endearing creature recognized for his unusual coat markings and renowned for his wonderful temperament. He makes an ideal and very versatile child s riding pony and when outgrown by the children, will happily adapt to becoming a superb and eye-catching driving pony. He was at one time feral in the British Isles and his spotted coat pattern was his natural camouflage as he roamed the heaths and forests of ancient Britain. Stone Age man painted pictures of him on his caves walls and he also appeared in many illustrated manuscripts and drawings through the ages. During Roman times, some of the mounts of the more important Officers were spotted horses of great elegance and from old paintings and documents, we have learned that many of the fine horses sent as gifts between Royal Families of Europe were spotted. After the last War, there was a great awakening of interest in spotted equines, many of which were exported to Australia, America, Canada and Europe, so in 1947 a Society, called the British Spotted Horse and Pony Society was formed to keep a register of them. With so many having left the British shores during the 1960 s and 1970 s, the British Spotted Pony became relatively rare and so in 1976, the Society split with the ponies of 14.2hh and under being looked after by the British Spotted Pony Society, while the bigger ones went under the wing of the British Appaloosa Society. Stud Visit Juistzoo Stud Free State At the end of the summer I had a chance to visit the Juistzoo stud and had a wonderful afternoon driving with Roelf Jordaan in his Landrover, through some very special herds of horses. Situated between Ladybrand and Hobhouse in the Free State, this is one of the oldest Appaloosa Studs in the country. The Jordaan family have all enjoyed the horses over the years, and even rode a team of five spotty's at the Ficksburg Show more than two decades ago! They also have abundant game and host many international hunters. Roelf has always selected for big powerfully built stock, producing strong versatile riding horses. Many have been sold to game ranches, stud farms and simply as riding horses. Some of the foundation stock came from the Maluti Stud and one of the top stallions was Alpha Toby's Awesome, a son of the100 % legendary colour producer Alpha Toby's Chaparral. This stud has also bred some very beautiful pintos, as can be seen in the attached herd photos. The horses are raised as close to nature as possible and most are broken in and sold going well under saddle. The Eastern Free State has rolling grassland, a perfect climate for raising horses and the very low incidence of African Horse Sickness, is a big bonus. Visitors are always welcome. BUYING REGISTERED STOCK It still seems to be common for up-coming breeders to purchase stock that is not registered with our society. When interested in any particular Appaloosa that either says eligible for registration or can be registered please do contact any one of the council members to confirm that this is the case. There is another registry, which is the South African Sport Horse Federation (SASHF) which does allow Appaloosa s, but they are then classified as spotted sport horses and this registry is NOT affiliated to the AHBSSA. Foals can only be registered with the AHBSSA if the following is in place: 1. Breeder to be a registered paid up member of the society 2. Both Sire and Dam have been inspected and approved for breeding. 3. The Sire has a negative and valid CEM certificate (see further in the New Spot for the latest update on CEM) 4. A covering certificate has been submitted by the breeder 5. By the time the foal is 3 months old, the breeder must have sent in an application to birth notify the foal. It may be wise to request from the SELLER who the breeder of the foal/horse is, this way it s easier for us to check and confirm whether that person was indeed a member of our society. If the horse is registered with our society, there will be a registration number available from our registrations officer please do not hesitate to request it. 10

CEM UPDATE Since 2012/2013 breeding season, the equine industry in South Africa has been required to adhere to the testing regime required for Contagious Equine Metritis (CEM) screening. The purpose of this screening programme was to substantiate the theory that the CEM outbreak identified in 2011 was not widespread and to provide some of the information that will be required to ultimately re-establish South Africa s CEM-free Status. Trace-forward and trace-back investigations identified a total of 39 cases, all of which have been treated successfully. Typing of the causative bacterium demonstrates that it is highly likely that there was a point introduction of the disease into the country and only horses in contact with the positive horses at the index property, an equine artificial breeding centre, were exposed to CEM. Thanks to the excellent co-operation by the equine industry, the evidence gathered from the nationwide screening programme shows that the CEM status in South Africa is currently stable, with no new cases being identified. As a result of the above, the Directorate: Animal Health (DAH) at DAFF is finalizing its records in order to close off all the CEM cases on the international OIE (World Organisation of Animal Health) reporting system, which will signal the end of the 2011 CEM outbreak. Once the 2011 CEM outbreak has been closed, the DAH will tackle the next step, namely to try and officially declare South Africa free of CEM via the OIE system according to internationally accepted standards. In order to make such a declaration, South Africa will have to demonstrate ongoing surveillance for CEM even after declared end of the 2011 outbreak. However, as the risk profile has decreased considerable, it has been decided that only a single set of swabs will be required for each stallion during the next testing season (July June). This will replace the currently-stipulated requirements of two sets of tests per stallion and breeding season. The reduced single CEM test requirement will continue to apply to all stallions used for breeding, either by natural mating or artificial insemination. A clearance certificate will be issued by the Equine Research Centre laboratory subject to negative results from this single test and only foals born to stallions in possession of a CEM-Clearance certificate valid for that year will be allowed to be registered. A PDF copy of above will be available shortly on the AHBSSA website. 11

The brainchild of George Contos who got advice from his friend, Prof. Tom Huffman. Jandre & Corlia Boshoff kindly offered to house the museum on their beautiful and historical farm, Fairview Estates, based just outside Bethlehem, Free State. At first, Prof. Thomas Huffman was going to try dissuade us from setting up the Museum, until he was awestruck by the beautiful farm where we intended on placing the Museum. I, Claire Amm, arrived on the weekend with the first 1000km endurance blanket ever awarded in South Africa and that to a dear Appaloosa, Smoke Signals, whose name is embroidered on the blanket. Smoke Signals also completed 6 consecutive Fauresmith 200km National Rides - a horse who definitely has left a mark on our beloved Breed. Other items of interest includes framed pictures of our famous Appaloosas as well as the original master copies of all our Appaloosa News Spots to date. This box contained the original colour photos, even at a time when the Newsletter was printed in a drab black and white version. The original certificates, designed by Claire Amm have also been placed at the Museum. The Appaloosa Museum and Heritage Centre is an excellent reference for members and up-coming breeders alike to view the history of our Society and our Appaloosa s and their achievements. The Boshoff s have a Bed & Breakfast, Opstal Herehuis which is a sandstone building dating back to the early 1900 s and is situated in a picturesque valley surrounded by mountains. There is no need to just drop by a quick visit, but one can stay over the night and take their time viewing all the interesting items placed in the Museum and also view The Boshoff s delightful Appaloosas who have formed the Manchado Appaloosa Stud, as well as their Alpaca herd. The wonderful opportunity for all paid up breeders to advertise freely by sending an A2 poster with a collage of their Appaloosas or one unique picture of one of their Appaloosas with the name and contact details of the stud. Corlia has offered to frame Lulu s these posters Kalahari s Ele- so that they are all the same. Members gance are encouraged to take the time and view the Appaloosa Museum and Heritage Centre as well as send in their contributions towards it. Greetings, Claire Appaloosa Museum & Heritage Centre 12

Groete, Jandre & Corlia Boshoff 13

WESTERN CAPE NEWS Getting some spots out there, Lulus Milestone owned by Lisa-Marie Le Cok, took part in his first show (Pole on the Ground) in Noordhoek in October 2014. Starlight Triumphant left for his new home as a gelding at the very beautiful Silver Mist stables owned by Gavin and Caroline Magrath. Caroline also owns Triumphant s father, Kaloosa Triumph, who was her very first Appaloosa. These horses live a life of absolute luxury at Silver Mist. Pictured below is Starlight Triumphant standing in the Equine Shower. 16

WESTERN CAPE NEWS TEAM DOT-A-LOT Dominique Thoenes is successfully competing with her Appaloosa x Warmblood, Southcross Andromeda. Andromeda was bred by Southcross Sport Horse Stud owned by Cilla Dugmore based just outside Malmesbury, Western Cape. In a telephone interview, Cilla explains how she purchased the dam of this mare from Claire Amm: I told Claire I wanted a fewspot filly and Alpha Wap s Rockchick was what she sent. Alpha Wap s Rockchick arrived at my place as a 3 year old and had two foals in succession from my warmblood stallion, Southcross Auf Wiedersehn who is by Wendesi out of an Atilla mare. First was Aurora who now belongs to William Thomson and is his junior horse and next came Andromeda. Alpha Wap s Rockchick was then backed and later did some showjumping which she loved and always came home with rosettes. It is no problem for her to jump the paddock fence from a standstill. She was then put in foal to Principal s Laurence, but sadly didn t hold the pregnancy. She has subsequently had 2 fillies by him, Lyra born in 2013 and more recently Last Romance born in 2014. She is currently in foal again to Southcross Auf Wiedersehn for a 2015 foal. Well done to Dominique for bringing on such a spectacular animal. Sire: Southcross Auf Wiedersehn Dam: Alpha Toby s Rockchick Andromeda with owner, Dominique 17

EETO So, what is EETO? Extreme Equestrian Trail is an exciting, fun and challenging sport for the whole family and riders of all disciplines who want to improve the bond with their horse and their overall horsemanship. Competition is open to any breed of horse. EET requires the development and use of excellent communication and understanding between horse and rider and promotes trust and good horsemanship through the negotiation of a number of built or natural obstacles in an arena or an open trail area. EET has a number of divisions to cater for riders and horses in the various stages of their training and development as well as 3 distinct event types. EETO (Extreme Equestrian Trail Organisation of South Africa) has an affiliation with the Extreme Cowboy Association (EXCA) in the United States to provide local riders with an opportunity to compete internationally should they desire. The Charity Ride arranged by EETO earlier this year EETO organised by AHBSSA member Debbie Boltman arranged for an Extreme Trail Ride, as a fund raiser for charity earlier this year near Hartebeespoortdam. Various distances could be entered with obstacles of all levels and was challenging but extremely enjoyed by all participants. Quite a few Appaloosas took part and it was noted that all were barefoot and virtually all bitless as well. This kind of discipline fits the Appaloosas like a glove and the horses and riders alike enjoyed the challenge. Find Extreme Trial on fb at https://www.facebook.com/groups/eetosa/ Xube Shonge took a team of horses earlier this year to an EETO event the results are amazing: Alpha Toby s Colourburst ridden by Mercia Smith, Les Chevaux Dominique ridden by Vanessa Avenant & Painted Condelizia ridden by Janneke van Rensburg competing in the 30 km extreme trail 18

Jeug / Youth This section is dedicated to our young people and we would appreciate contributions from all our young Appaloosa lovers / riders from all over the country. Please share your interest, achievements and daily interaction with your horses with us. We are trying to get the youth involved in our News Spot and follow their progress We would like them to send details and photos of the shows and events they enter this year. With details of where, the judge, how many in class and the position that they were placed. After each News Spot the showing committee will judge who they think is the most worthy Youth of a small prize then at the end of the year a trophy will be given to the person who has achieved the most points. All to be donated by Belloosa Stud. Legendary endurance star Alpha Flintham, who completed every competition in his career, including 8 Fauresmiths, is enjoying his retirement. Here he is ridden by 6 yr old Jenny Schutte round the farm. 21

African Horse Sickness Movement! A sad state of affairs, with the lack of the vaccines available during the most crucial time when most horse owners vaccinate their beloved equines. However, this is not the purpose of this article. The purpose of this article is to inform buyers and sellers alike of the movement requirements required to move from any other province into the Western Cape. The movement requirements are as follows: 1. Vaccinations MUST be administered by a veterinarian. 2. Vaccinations must be signed off by the veterinarian that administered the vaccinations into a valid passport such as those supplied by SAEF, NHRA and SA Studbook. No pieces of paper, or home-made passports are permitted. 3. Travelling of the horse into the WC may only commence 60 days after the last vaccination was given. 4. A Health Certificate must be completed by a veterinarian within 48 hours of transporting the horse to the WC. 5. A Movement Permit, will be filled in by the veterinarian when he/she does the Health Certificate. The Movement Permit is then sent to the State Vet s Offices in the Province that the horse is currently standing in and will or will not give the horse the permission to move, depending on the AHS Outbreak status of that area where the horse is standing. The permission is then sent to the veterinarian and this will be given to the owner where the horse is standing currently. 6. A new protocol has just come into effect, thereby closing off most areas outside the Western Cape as of the 1 February until the 30 June every year. Horses may be moved during this time, but a compulsory stop-over just within the WC borders ie Riversdal or Youngstock Beaufort West, where the horse would need to stand between 10 14 days (depending on AHS Status of the province from where the horse came from) and then a compulsory PCR test will be done to determine if the horse is free of the AHS virus. Unfortunately, for both Buyers and Sellers this becomes quite a costly excerise and every year it is becoming more difficult for the Buyer s in the Western Cape to purchase horses during February and June. It would, quite obviously, be easier for the Sellers in the other provinces to get a vet to vaccinate their horses, but this is, too, very costly on the Seller s behalf The same is not required for horses leaving the Western Cape to other provinces, however, remember that the Surveillance Area in the Western Cape is quite big, and in this area, one may not vaccinate for AHS unless shows are attended or the horses are travelling and then only once permission has been received from the Western Cape State Vet. 22
