Evacuation Evacuation procedures - displayed in the corridors of Paramedic Teaching Suite. Evacuation Alarm - A series of BEEP & WHOOP sirens indicate an incident. Follow instructions from PA announcement and/or Fire Warden. Assembly Point Sturt oval. Fire extinguishers located at end of corridors of Paramedic Teaching Suite.
Safety Sharps including vials, cannulas, giving & drawing up needles, are to be placed in the yellow sharps containers. When full, the lid is to be pressed down to seal off the contents permanently, then returned to N252 (Stores). Students are NOT permitted to cannulate people at all. Drug kits are stocked with Mock Medicines (Distilled water) there are NO actual chemicals in the vials, they are safe for practice use, but are not to be used on people.
Safety Non hazardous medical waste (gloves, medical wrapping etc.) must be disposed of in the general waste bins Recycle bins are for oxygen tubing and masks, syringes (no needles), burettes, IV lines and fluid bags, bandages etc. PPE protection (Eyewear & Gloves) are supplied in each room, they must be worn during clinical simulation scenarios and clinical skills practice. Defibrillators are extremely dangerous, they are capable of delivering a FATAL shock! Only use on a manikin, under supervision from a tutor or lecturer.
Safety Manikins are heavy, always use 2 people to lift them, using safe lifting techniques learned in the manual handling workshops. A cervical collar must be used to prevent damage to the manikins neck. The Ambulance is NOT to be driven by students. Students will not activate any of it s features unless instructed to do so by a paramedic unit staff member. The ambulance is regulated by manual handling standards, students will not be allowed to interact with the vehicle until manual handling has been completed. The Car Wreck in the ambulance shed was custom built to be taken apart for extrication scenarios of MVA s. Doors and roof are removable, all glass has been removed. All students must undertake an information session on it s safe operation. Never try to lift heavy objects alone, ask for assistance. If any sharp edges are found, notify a staff member.
Safety Smoking is prohibited in ALL buildings at Flinders University. Food and drink containers must be disposed of in the general waste bins. All spillages must be cleaned up immediately after they occur and reported to a staff member. All accidents, defective or broken equipment, electrical faults or near misses of any kind must be reported immediately to a staff member. All injuries and illnesses must be reported immediately to a staff member. First aid will be administered by trained first aid officers, or fully qualified paramedic staff. The First Aid kit is located in N243.
Workplace Health and Safety Act, 2012 Students have responsibilities under the act, students are required to: Avoid, eliminate or minimise hazards of which they are aware. Comply with all occupational health and safety instructions. Make proper use of all safety devices and personal protective equipment. Not wilfully place at risk the health and safety of themselves or any other person. Seek information or advice where necessary, or when in doubt, before carrying out new or unfamiliar tasks. Wear protective clothing and footwear. Be familiar with emergency and evacuation procedures. Report and record all accidents and near miss incidents on the Injury, Illness and Incident. Dress Code All students must wear the paramedic student uniform during practical classes. Students will not be permitted to participate in practical classes unless wearing the full paramedic student uniform.
Attitude & Behaviour All students are required to adhere to the Paramedic Degree Professional Behaviours Guidelines. Failure to adhere to these guidelines may result in a FAIL of the topic.
