Scouting Siena Siena concludes the month of November with the University of Denver Thanksgiving Classic this weekend The Saints are playing in a regular season tournament for the second straight season after having not done so the previous three seasons Siena is 58-46 (.558) all-time in regular season tournaments The Saints have won 16 regular season tournaments, most recently the 2002 Saint Joseph s Hawks Classic The Saints are making just the program s second-ever appearance in the State of Colorado Siena competed in the Coors Classic Nov. 23-24, 2007, upsetting host Colorado 83-74 before falling to Clemson 77-67 in the Championship Game Of the five Division I programs from Colorado, Siena has only previously faced the University of Colorado The Buffaloes defeated Siena 98-78 in the Saints only previous NCAA Tournament Appearance in 2001 in Nashville, Tenn., before the Saints enacted revenge on Colorado s home court in that 2007 win Siena is off to its first 2-0 start since the program s 2000-01 MAAC Championship season The Saints have not started a season 3-0 since the program s 1993-94 campaign Siena is the only remaining undefeated team in the MAAC and one of just three with a winning record (Quinnipiac 3-2, Monmouth 2-1) With one win this weekend, the Saints would secure their second straight winning November Siena posted a 3-2 record last November, marking the program s first winning November since November 2000 Senior captain Tehresa Coles (Player of the Week) and Margot Hetzke (Rookie of the Week) won MAAC Weekly Awards Monday The last time the Saints swept the MAAC s Weekly Awards was Jan. 20, 2004 (Liene Jansone - Co-Player, Katelyn Dooley - Co-Rookie) Coles earned the honor for the first time in her career after scoring a game-high 23 points on 9-13 shooting including 3-3 from three-point range in the Saints lone game last week, a 79-57 win over Central Connecticut in the home opener last Wednesday at the ARC Coles was also named the College Sports Madness MAAC Player of the Week, marking the second straight week that the Saints have boasted that honoree to begin the season (Hetzke won the award the previous week) Hetzke earned her second straight Rookie of the Week award to open her collegiate career with nine points and 10 rebounds Hetzke was also named MAAC Rookie of the Week the previous week after scoring 29 points - tied for the fourth highest total in Division I history by a freshman in their collegiate debut - in the Saints season-opening win at Mid-American Conference Eastern Division preseason favorite Buffalo Siena has now boasted the MAAC s Rookie of the Week seven times since the start of last season with four different players earning honors No other MAAC school has had more than three weekly award winners and two different honorees over that time Siena has held a 68-32 advantage in points in the paint over their first two games The Saints have held an identically dominant 34-16 margin in each game Siena is currently playing with just eight players on its active roster Senior forward Kelsey Booth (hip surgery) and sophomore captain Brianna Logan (torn ACL) are out for the season Red-shirt freshman Denisha Petty-Evans (transfer) and freshman Joella Gibson (redshirt) will also sit out this season Freshman forward Emmanuella Edoka is returning from an ACL injury and hopes to rejoin the team soon Siena was projected to finish 10th (out of 11 teams) in the MAAC Preseason Coaches Poll The Saints finished 10th last season Siena has finished better than its preseason prediction in three of the past four years Senior captain Tehresa Coles and sophomore captain Meghan Donohue were named Preseason Third Team All-MAAC selections Coles and Donohue along with sophomore point guard Brianna Logan are the team s tri-captains this season Coles has led the MAAC in steals each of the past two seasons Coles led the Saints in scoring (10.8), rebounding (5.7-10th MAAC) and steals (2.1-1st MAAC) last season Donohue was named to the MAAC All-Rookie Team last season after ranking second amongst conference freshmen in both scoring (8.5) and rebounding (5.0) Donohue was a three-time MAAC Rookie of the Week last year and ranked fourth in the MAAC shooting 51% from the field Siena returns three starters and eight letterwinners from last year s team Siena welcomes back four of their top five and seven of their top nine scorers from a year ago, returning 68.5% of their scoring The Saints welcome five newcomers to the program this season Freshmen Margot Hetzke and Kollyns Scarbrough have begun the season in the starting lineup Freshman Emmanuella Edoka is recovering from a torn ACL and hopes to be ready to see game action next month Denisha Petty-Evans (transfer from George Mason) and Joella Gibson (redshirt) will sit out this season Scouting Denver Posted a 9-23 overall record last season, finishing sixth in the Summit League with a 5-9 conference mark Upset both the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds to advance to the Summit League Championship Game as the No. 6 seed Projected to finish fifth (nine teams) in the Summit League Preseason Coaches Poll Junior point guard Paige Bradley was named to the Summit League s Preseason All-Second Team Return three starters and seven letterwinners while welcoming five newcomers Dropped their first three games to begin the season, losing at home to Hawaii and Colorado and on the road at Wyoming Shooting just 30% from the field and 18% from three-point range while averaging just 49.3 points Play seven of their first eight games at home this season Their next seven games will be played on road or neutral courts
