Marshals Post Inside this issue: Record breaking training weekend review Club members see out the year in style Where to marshal in 2017 December 2016

Forthcoming events Saturday 11 February: The South Downs Stages (rally) Saturday 17-Sunday 18 March: Goodwood 75 th Members Meeting (race) For more information, contact Chief Marshal Keith Allfrey (chief@goodwoodmarshalsclub.org.uk) Visit the club website on regular occasions for updates and new events as they are confirmed for 2017, along with other marshalling opportunities. Information for marshals attending the South Down Stages From 2017, marshals need to have completed the MSA Rally Marshal online training in order to marshal on their own on stage rallies. More information on MSA marshal training and registration is available to access at https://www.msauk.org/marshals/online-rally-marshalstraining 2

From your Chairman John Dorkins 2016 is nearly at an end. Can someone please tell me where did it all go? I have been asked to write a Christmas message, it only seems like yesterday I was doing this for Christmas 2015. Some of the topics I wish to highlight are similar to last year; the reason for this is that we have had another great year. We have more members than ever before, more volunteers donning orange overalls and more members attending other venues as well as Goodwood. We have donated 2,000 to charity again this year following a successful track day at the end of 2015. We are hopeful that we can give again this year, however track prices have increased so this may limit our donation. We have had support this year from Aston Martin which has been used to help encourage the cadet section within the club. Further support from Joe Macari has helped towards expenses. We are hopeful that both these supporters will continue next year with their generous contributions. The committee of 2016 has been fantastic in all their hard work in every area of the club s activity as they do so much behind the scenes, a big thank you from me. On the technical side, we are on Facebook and Twitter and a new website has been designed which is proving to be much more accessible to users. Last but not least I must congratulate all committee and club members on the best ever training weekend, both in numbers and participation which rounded off a great year. I hope to see more of all of you next year. Until then, on behalf of the committee and myself, I wish you all a happy Christmas and a healthy and safe New Year 3

New website for Goodwood Marshals Club By Ian Houghton A number of you may already be aware that we have recently upgraded our website and revamped the layout. This was driven by a number of factors, not least that we felt the website needed to become more modern, allowing people to access it via their mobile device and to try and improve things for users. Our sincere thanks to Lucien McQueen who hosted and managed the website for us for free for many years. The site has been developed by BRWebconsulting from Hastings, who agreed to reduce the price to the Club as a form of support. We are extremely grateful to them. The main bulk of the site is now operational and the switch over was achieved very quickly thanks largely to Alex Gibbs, our webmaster. He's done a considerable amount of work with the developers in a short space of time. The site now has live feeds from our Facebook and Twitter feeds, and feels more modern and fresh. The next stage is to allow new members to join the Club either from their PC or mobile device, or from a mobile device at the Breakfast Clubs, paying immediately online using a PayPal account and possibly credit or debit card. We also want new members to receive a welcome email with event details, what to wear, where to go, etc, automatically, and also send out a 'welcome pack' from our Membership Secretary. This element is primarily being driven by Keith Allfrey. So, why not search us on Google, or type in www.goodwoodmarshalsclub.org and have a look. 4

Club members see the year out in style! Being a member of Goodwood Marshals Club is not just about the ontrack action, there are also social activities taking place between events. The end of a year isn t complete without a Christmas party, and the GMC is no exception. Each year it offers members an opportunity to reflect on the year s achievements in relaxed surroundings with a subsidised meal. The venue for the 2016 meal was the Spur at Slindon, and was attended by more than 30 people. Those who attended enjoyed the food served up and would recommend it to other members as a place to visit in the New Year. The meal was the final engagement in the 2016 social calendar that included a variety of events, including a visit to the Williams F1 factory. On the horizon for 2017 is another possible visit to a F1 team factory and to the Aston Martin factory. Further details will follow. If you have any suggestions for possible social events, please contact a member of the committee. 5

Training weekend review By Sam Waters, Training and PR Secretary The 2016 MSA Marshals Training Days took place over the weekend of the 3rd and 4th December at Goodwood Motor Circuit. It followed the same format as last year, with Speed and Race Training being covered over one weekend. We appreciate this means some people who only marshal Speed events have to sit through sessions that may not be relevant to them. However this also means that those that marshal at Speed and Race events don't have to sit through similar sessions twice... this is an approach that seems to be welcomed by most of you and by the MSA Instructor Team. This year saw record attendance, with 164 signed on over the two days 92 on Saturday and another 72 on Sunday. To put this into perspective, we had a total of 94 signed on over the whole weekend last year! It was great to see so many new recruits as well. For many of them, this was their first taste of marshalling. 6

The record attendance is primarily due to a focus from the club on recruiting new marshals throughout 2016. The Club have had publicity stands at all of the Goodwood Breakfast Club events, the Festival of Speed and the Revival Meeting as well as smaller local events and car shows. This has bought new marshals in across the board, from cadets to single marshals, families and even paramedics and fire fighters that wish to join the Rescue Unit. The MSA Instructors for the weekend were Trevor Jackson, Pete Harris and Dorothy Uwota, with the First Aid session provided by Gerry Windett, and the Practical Fire Fighting provided by Triangle Fire Safety. We also had Andrew Bisping join us from Go Motorsport at the MSA. Jon Barnett, General Manager for Goodwood Motor Circuit, also came along to see what the world of marshalling is all about. Jon was very impressed with the dedication of volunteers, and understands how vital Marshals are to the events at Goodwood and other circuits. The Saturday also saw 15 students from Northbrook College attend to see what Marshalling is about as part of their Motorsport course. Hopefully some of these students will decide to sign up as cadets or as marshals once they turn 18. 7

There will hopefully be another training day set up for trainees mid-way through the 2017 season for new recruits, and with the usual training weekend in November/December 2017. Provisional dates will be announced early in 2017. After the record attendance this year, we will probably have to cap numbers attending in future and operate a waiting list. This year's training days may have been a little too busy! Finally, I just want to clarify the official position on training from the MSA. To maintain your MSA Marshals Registration, you must: - Attend at least four event days per year for each grade on your Registration Card - Attend at least one MSA Marshals Training Day every two years Please note that the MSA are monitoring this closely and it will be the case soon that you must meet these requirements before being able to renew your Marshals Registration. 8

Life beyond Goodwood going on an orange roadtrip Those who attended the annual training weekend at the beginning of December will have heard examples of how you can become a marshal and see the world! It is indeed true that motorsport does take place beyond the Goodwood circuit boundary, but you don t have to use your air miles in 2017 to broaden your marshalling experience. Here are a few options to consider close to home: Thruxton the closest circuit to Goodwood, Thruxton in Hampshire describes itself as the fastest circuit in the UK. Highlights of its calendar includes the British Touring Car Championship and the British Truck Championship, as well as historic and club events. Attendance at events is generally managed through an online portal run by the British Automobile Racing Club (BARC). Brands Hatch less than 10 miles further from Goodwood than Thruxton (albeit via the M25!), Brands Hatch in Kent is part of the Motorsport Vision (MSV) group, whose circuit facilities are among the best in the country. There are events running at either the Indy or GP circuit nearly every weekend of the racing season so you are never short of opportunities. Silverstone as at Brands, there is a calendar full of events allowing you to marshal at the home of the British Grand Prix if you don t have the prerequisite experience to be part of the showcase event. Most of the premier championships hold rounds on one of the circuit s many layouts. Visit the Goodwood Marshals Club website www.goodwoodmarshalsclub.org.uk for more information about other clubs and circuits. 9

10 Dear Santa. Please can I have.. Are friends and family struggling to find that perfect gift for you this Christmas? Why don t you use the opportunity to build up your kit bag for 2017? Most marshals will have their one piece of equipment they would never leave home without, but here are a few that are worth considering: Hats during at least one event at Goodwood in 2016, marshals experienced four seasons in one day! It will well known that the biggest heat loss during cold conditions is through your head. It is equally the weak point of the body during hot conditions as sun stroke could take effect far quicker without proper protection. It is recommended you have a wooly hat and a peaked cap in your kit bag at all times. Food and drink containers while events at Goodwood have a scheduled lunch break, there may be occasions when it is not always possible to give marshals that break. This is particularly true at race meetings that have a set programme of sessions to be completed, which may have fallen behind schedule due to on track incidents causing delays. This means you could be on post all day, without an opportunity to visit circuit catering facilities. Make sure you pack enough supplies for the day, including drinks (a decent sized flask would be useful on these occasions as there will be no chance to refill at lunchtime). Wheeled kit box look at marshals around the country and you will see many using a Stanley mobile tool chest. It serves many purposes - it is an easy way to store and transport all of your kit from your car to your post, which can be some distance at larger events. It is also large enough to be used as a seat. While many posts at Goodwood have a bench for marshals, this is not always the case around the country. What is your must have piece of kit? Share your suggestions with new marshals at your next event.
