KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (0-2) VS. ATLANTA FALCONS (1-1) REGULAR SEASON GAME #3 SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2008 12:00 PM (CENTRAL) GEORGIA DOME, ATLANTA GEORGIA CBS Regional Coverage KCTV-5 (CBS in Kansas City) Play-by-play: Gus Johnson Color Commentator: Steve Tasker BROADCAST INFORMATION Chiefs FOX Football Radio Network KCFX-FM (101.1 FM in Kansas City) Play-by-play: Mitch Holthus Color Commentator: Len Dawson Sideline Reporter: Kendall Gammon 2008 Stats and NFL Rankings THE MATCH-UP The Chiefs make just their third-ever visit to the Georgia Dome as Kansas City travels to Atlanta on Sunday. Herm Edwards squad is 0-2 on the season after suffering a 23-8 loss vs. Oakland (9/14). The Falcons are 1-1 after suffering a 24-9 loss at Tampa Bay (9/14). Sunday s game will be the Chiefs initial encounter with Falcons rookie head coach Mike Smith. Kansas City has won fi ve of its six previous showdowns with Atlanta, including a 56-10 decision at Arrowhead (10/24/04). However, only four players remain on Kansas City s roster who saw duty in that contest. One of those players is Chiefs nine-time Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez (9,976) who needs just 85 yards to surpass TE Shannon Sharpe (10,060) for the most receiving yards by a tight end in NFL history. Two-time Pro Bowl RB Larry Johnson will make his fi rst career start against the Falcons. Johnson needs 38 more yards to bypass RB Christian Okoye (4,897) as the second-leading rusher in Chiefs history. Atlanta has its own home-run hitter in the backfi eld in newly-acquired RB Michael Turner, who joined the Falcons as a UFA from San Diego. In his Falcons debut, Turner ripped off an Atlanta single-game record 220 rushing yards in a 34-21 triumph vs. Detroit (9/7). The Falcons boast a rookie signal caller in QB Matt Ryan (D1-08), who was the third overall selection in the 2008 NFL Draft, while LB Keith Brooking (D1-98) is the club s only remaining member of its Super Bowl XXXIII squad. The Chiefs lost starting QB Brodie Croyle in a narrow 17-10 Opening Day loss at New England (9/7). Twelve-year veteran QB Damon Huard started last week against the Raiders, but was injured, giving way to second-year QB Tyler Thigpen. Huard owns a 6-2 career record in starts against NFC foes. Kansas City s defense ranked in the league s top fi ve in nine different defensive categories in 2007. Kansas City led the league in third-down defense (30.2%) and ranked second in Red Zone TD percentage (37.3%) a year ago. The Chiefs return home to Arrowhead next week for a divisional showdown vs. Denver (9/28), while Atlanta has an NFC South road trip to Carolina (9/28). The only other NFC team that was in existence before the AFL-NFL merger that Kansas City has met fewer times is Philadelphia (5). Kansas City claimed a 56-10 decision in the most recent meeting between the two squads at Arrowhead (10/24/04) as the Chiefs set an NFL single-game record eight rushing TDs (four each by RBs Priest Holmes and Derrick Blaylock). Atlanta s lone regular season win over KC was a 29-13 decision (12/24/00). The Chiefs initial regular season trip to Atlanta came in the 72 regular season fi nale at Atlanta s Fulton County Stadium. Atlanta, Arizona and Washington are the only three current NFL franchises that have never registered a regular season victory at Arrowhead. AMERICUS, GEORGIA - CRADLE OF COACHES Kansas City s offense is guided by offensive coordinator Chan Gailey, who is in his 15th season in the NFL ranks. He returns to his home state after a six-year run as head coach at Georgia Tech, where he compiled a 44-33 record and helped the Yellow Jackets earn six straight bowl berths. Gailey hails from Americus, Georgia, the same hamlet that produced longtime NFL head coach Dan Reeves, the man who guided Atlanta to its only Super Bowl appearance (SB XXXIII). Gailey served on Reeves staff in Denver from 85-90 and was part of Broncos squads that represented the AFC in Super Bowls XXI, XXII and XXIV. Gailey also served as assistant coach on the Pittsburgh staff that guided the Steelers to a berth in Super Bowl XXX.

VS. CHIEFS HEAD COACH - HERM EDWARDS Herm Edwards was named the 10th head coach in Kansas City history on January 9, 2006. The fi rst coach in franchise history to guide the Chiefs to the playoffs in his initial season, he helped the 2006 Chiefs become just the fi fth team since 2000 to overcome an 0-2 start and still make the postseason. Edwards guided the N.Y. Jets to three postseason berths during a fi ve-year stint (2001-05) with that franchise. He originally joined the Chiefs as a recipient of the NFL s Minority Coaching Fellowship in 89. He later served as a scout ( 90-91, 95) and also coached defensive backs ( 92-94). Born in Fort Monmouth, NJ on April 27, 1954, Edwards served as Tampa Bay s assistant head coach/dbs coach under Tony Dungy from 96-00. Edwards concluded his college career as a DB at San Diego State in 76 and signed as a rookie free agent with Philadelphia ( 77-85). In 135 career starts with the Eagles, he established a franchise record with 38 INTs, and started in Super Bowl XV. Edwards concluded his NFL playing career seeing duty in seven games for the Rams and Falcons in 86. He then coached DBs at San Jose State ( 87-89) prior to his arrival in the NFL ranks with Kansas City in 90. FALCONS HEAD COACH - MIKE SMITH Mike Smith was named the 14th head coach in Falcons history on January 23, 2008. He accepted his fi rst NFL head coaching position after serving as the defensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars (2003-07). With Smith leading the Jacksonville defense, the Jaguars ranked seventh in total defense (301.0 ypg), fi fth in points allowed (16.5 ppg), sixth in rushing defense (99.8 ypg) and allowed the fewest rushing TDs (23) from 2003-05. Born on June 13, 1959, the Daytona Beach, Florida native entered the NFL coaching ranks on Brian Billick s staff as Baltimore s linebackers coach ( 99-2002). Smith coached on the staff of the Super Bowl XXXV champions that set an NFL record by allowing only 165 points in 2000. He was the position coach for Pro Bowl LBs Ray Lewis and Peter Boulware. Smith began his coaching career as an assistant at San Diego State ( 82-85) and also served stints at Morehead State ( 86) and Tennessee Tech ( 87-98). A standout linebacker at East Tennessee State, Smith was twice named the squad s Defensive MVP and continued his playing career for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the CFL in 82. The Chiefs have 27 players on the 53-man roster or a reserve list (27 of 55-49.1%) who originally entered the NFL as Chiefs draftees. Twenty-two of those 55 have been selected over the past three years. Incredibly, 60.4% of the players on Kansas City s 53-man roster (32 of 53) have three years of NFL experience or less, including 15 rookies (28.3%), the most rookies on any NFL Opening Day roster. The Chiefs started six of those rookies on Opening Day, the highest tally by the club since the AFL-NFL merger. Based on research compiled by Mike Sando of ESPN.com, the Chiefs boasted the NFL s youngest Opening Day starting lineup in the NFL at 24.8 years old. Based on Opening Day 53-man rosters provided by the NFL, the Chiefs and Packers owned the NFL s youngest rosters at 25.57 years old. In terms of average experience, no team had a lower average experience than Kansas City at 3.45 years. HALL OF FAME CB EMMITT THOMAS Former Chiefs CB Emmitt Thomas who currently serves as assistant head coach/secondary coach of the Atlanta Falcons was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame on August 3rd. Thomas will have his jersey #18 retired by the Chiefs and will receive his Pro Football Hall of Fame ring during a pregame ceremony at Arrowhead Stadium prior to Kansas City s contest vs. the Tennessee Titans (10/19). Thomas is the ninth player in franchise history to have his jersey retired, joining K Jan Stenerud (3), QB Len Dawson (16), RB Abner Haynes (28), RB Stone Johnson (33), RB Mack Lee Hill (36), LB Willie Lanier (63), LB Bobby Bell (78) and DT Buck Buchanan (86). Thomas was inducted into the Chiefs Hall of Fame in 86. Thomas played 13 seasons for the Chiefs ( 66-78). One of the fi nest cornerbacks of his era, Thomas owns the Chiefs all-time interception record with 58. That total places him ninth on the NFL s all-time list and ranks fourth in NFL history among pure cornerbacks. The Angleton, Texas native returned fi ve INTs for TDs and registered fi ve postseason pickoffs, including one in the Chiefs Super Bowl IV victory over the Minnesota Vikings. Thomas was also a member of Kansas City s Super Bowl I squad. The undrafted free agent from Bishop College in Dallas appeared in 181 career games, the seventh-highest total in Kansas City history. GONZALEZ SETS NFL MARK FOR TIGHT ENDS Chiefs nine-time Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez ranks fi rst in NFL history among tight ends in receptions (831) and TD receptions (67). He ranks second in receiving yardage (9,976), trailing only Shannon Sharpe (10,060). Gonzalez s 67 total TDs with the Chiefs trail only RB Priest Holmes (83) in KC annals. Gonzalez ranks second in franchise history with 9,990 combined net yards. In addition, no tight end in NFL history owns more consecutive 60-catch campaigns (nine) than Gonzalez. Gonzalez owns 23 career 100-yard receiving games, the most in Chiefs history. Those 23 100-yard games are second in NFL history among TEs, trailing only Kellen Winslow (24). Gonzalez extended his team-record streak of games with at least one reception to 117 contests last week vs. Oakland (9/14). Only Ozzie Newsome (150) has a longer streak by a TE in NFL history. THE LAST TIME Chiefs 56, Falcons 10 October 24, 2004 Arrowhead Stadium 78,260 ATLANTA................ 3 0 7 0 10 KANSAS CITY........... 14 21 7 14 56 The Chiefs unleashed a 56-point outburst the second-highest total in franchise history and their highest tally ever at Arrowhead as KC demolished the Falcons by a 56-10 margin. The Chiefs set an NFL record with eight rushing TDs, including four from RB Priest Holmes in the first half, while the KC defense held Atlanta to just three offensive points. KC had 540 total yards and set team records with 36 total first downs and 21 rushing first downs. The game s key sequence came in the first quarter when a 32-yard scramble by Vick which accounted for over 26 percent of the Falcons rushing yards on the day set Atlanta up with first-and-goal at the nine on the opening drive of the game. Vick was knocked out of bounds at the one-yard line on first down and threw an incompletion on second down. Then, LB Shawn Barber knocked down Vick s pass attempt on third-and-goal from the one, forcing Atlanta to settle for a 19-yard FG. On the day, KC would hold the Falcons to just one of 11 (9.1%) on third down. On KC s first offensive snap, Holmes fumbled at the Chiefs 32-yard line. However, the KC defense held its ground on fourth down, setting the stage for one of the most impressive offensive displays in franchise history. In the first half alone, Holmes accounted for 103 rushing yards and four TDs, making him just the sixth player in NFL history to register four ground scores in a single half. RB Derrick Blaylock added a seven-yard TD run and Holmes dove into the end zone for his fourth TD of the day with just 0:02 left in the second quarter as KC took a commanding 35-3 halftime lead. After the Chiefs punted on their opening drive of the second half, the Falcons scored their lone TD of the day on a 75-yard punt return TD from CB Allen Rossum to make the count 35-10. Holmes who finished the game with 139 ground yards got the Chiefs to the Atlanta one-yard line before leaving the game. Blaylock took it from there, registering his second rushing TD of the day as KC went ahead 42-10. Blaylock finished the game with 90 rushing yards and tacked on a pair of fourth-quarter scoring runs to tie a franchise single-game record with four ground scores himself, making the final count 56-10 in favor of the Chiefs. On the day, KC ran the ball 49 times for 271 yards against an Atlanta defense that entered the game ranked first in the NFL against the run. Defensively, KC registered its third straight game with 4.0 sacks and held the Falcons to just 222 yards of total offense. GAME NOTES KC s eight rushing TDs set an NFL single-game record, breaking the previous mark of seven by the L.A. Rams who did it vs. Atlanta (12/4/76). KC s 271 rushing yards were the club's most since having 310 vs. Detroit (10/14/90). Holmes and Blaylock became the first pair of teammates in NFL history to each have three or more rushing TDs in the same game. ATL Feely, 19-yard field goal (8-62, 2:47). THE LAST GAME Raiders 23, Chiefs 8 September 14, 2008 Arrowhead Stadium 74,480 OAKLAND................6 0 7 10 23 KANSAS CITY.............0 0 0 8 8 Too little offense, too late sunk the Chiefs in their rivalry battle with the Oakland Raiders, as they suffered a 23-8 loss at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs offense struggled through the game s first three quarters and was unable to consistently stay on the field as the Oakland defense shut down the running game, allowing only 55 yards. Defensively, the Chiefs struggled to control the Raiders running game, giving up 300 yards on the ground. The Chiefs offense had the ball first and put together 10 snaps in their opening possession, including a pair of first downs. On several plays in the possession, QB Damon Huard left the field and WR Marques Hagans took the direct snap at the quarterback position for a pair of running plays. Ultimately, the drive stalled and a P Dustin Colquitt punt set up the Raiders at their own 41-yard line. In five plays Oakland had moved into Chiefs territory, but settled for a 56-yard FG by K Sebastian Janikowski for an early 3-0 lead. It was the longest field goal by an opponent against the Chiefs in franchise history. When the Chiefs got the ball back, a Huard pass was tipped and picked off by Oakland S Tyvon Branch who returned the interception 36 yards to the Chiefs nineyard line, setting up a 25-yard Janikowski FG to push the Oakland lead to 6-0. The second quarter was controlled by the defenses. Combined, the Chiefs and Raiders produced 85 yards in total offense on 26 plays over the first 15 minutes of play. The Chiefs made a change at quarterback on their last possession of the first quarter as QB Tyler Thigpen replaced Huard, who suffered a mild head trauma. The Raiders retained a 6-0 halftime advantage. The game s first touchdown came on Oakland s second possession of the third quarter. Starting at its five-yard line, Oakland rode the strong legs of the rookie RB Darren McFadden. He produced runs for 21 and 50 yards runs before a 19-yard TD run. The scoring drive went seven plays for 95 yards and gave Oakland a 13-0 lead with just over eight minutes to play in the period. Midway through the fourth quarter, the Raiders added another Janikowski FG, this one from 40 yards and a 16-0 lead. That s when the Chiefs put together their only scoring drive of the game. Starting at his own 20-yard line, Thigpen moved the team down the field, starting with a 30-yard completion to WR Dwayne Bowe on first down. The Chiefs then got a big third down conversion on a 10-yard completion from Thigpen to WR Devard Darling. The touchdown came on a third-and-goal play at the Raiders two-yard line as Thigpen found TE Tony Gonzalez in the end zone. On the two-point play, Thigpen ran a bootleg right and threw to FB Mike Cox to make the score 16-8 in favor of the Raiders, keeping hope alive for Kansas City. The Chiefs defense came back and forced a turnover, as Bush fumbled on a hit by S Jarrad Page and S Bernard Pollard recovered his second loose ball of the day. Thigpen moved the offense into Raiders territory, but threw an interception to LB Kirk Morrison that ended the Chiefs hopes of a comeback. The Raiders added a late touchdown as Bush scored on a 32-yard run that ended a six-play, 58-yard drive. Janikowski s PAT kick gave Oakland its final 23-8 margin.
