CFDA NATIONAL GAZETTE Cowboy Fast Draw Association Newsletter May 2006 Volume 1 EXTRA EXTRA CFDA National Championship results are in! Well cowboys and cowgirlies if you didn t attend the CFDA National Championship in Meridian Idaho May 12 th and 13th, you missed one heck of a match. The weather was excellent with temperatures in the mid 80s with no rain. The match was contested by 56 men and 21 women from as far away as Texas, Wisconsin, and Canada. The match was held at the Master Gunfighter distance of twenty one (21) feet. We saw a few shots just under.400 of a second and many in the mid to low.400s. Below is a list of the top 15 men and top 10 women. Please congratulate the winners when you see them as they all put on quite a show. It was estimated that over 800 spectators looked on during the course of the match. The awards banquet on Saturday night was a blast. Everyone dressed Page 1
in their Saturday best to enjoy the wonderful meal catered by the Red Lion Downtowner. Bob Mernickle and Bruce Lockrum won the Celebrity Shootout for Cystic Fibrosis. Bruce donated the custom engraved Cimmaron revolver and the $1000.00 custom Mernickle Holsters gun rig to be auctioned for cystic fibrosis. A big thank you goes to Brad Hemmah who was the high bidder for the gun and rig combo. Bob also donated the $1000.00 custom rig he won to be auctioned as well. Between the 2 rigs and gun an additional $3,600.00 was raised for Cystic Fibrosis at the banquet bringing that total to just over $6,000. Please thank these fellas for their huge hearts and willingness to give. This is the stuff that makes the CFDA work and represents the true Spirit of the Game. Congratulations to all the winners!! QUICK CAL S CORNER The Nationals in Meridian, ID is now history and what a success is was! The Charity Event on Thursday raised several thousand dollars for Cystic Fibrosis. This is a very positive aspect of our sport and I hope all major matches in the future adopt a charity, such as done in both Meridian and Deadwood, that can benefit from our helping hand. The contest attendance was up about 30% over last year and everyone I spoke with was not only enjoying the keen competition, but was also having a great time. Revisiting old friends and making new ones is what I enjoy the most. CFDA hosted a social gathering at match headquarters on Friday night and a good group of folks showed up. We have some very talented musicians and singers, a good time was had by all. And that folks, is what Cowboy Fast Draw TM is all about. We are very busy right now with the reorganization of CFDA. Chucky, Mississippi Marshal and I are covering a lot of ground in many areas. There is still much to be done and I believe the membership will be very pleased with the results. Some of these involve things like upgrading the data-base, pursuing sponsor contacts, clarifying regulations and policies, club formation packages, club start-up packages, ordering merchandise, establishing manufacturer relations and converting the rulebook into more of a comprehensive handbook. We have many things that we would like to discuss with the U.S. Marshals at Deadwood that will help guide us. Our goal is to enhance Cowboy Fast Draw TM, not to change the meaning of it. Cowboy Fast Draw TM a Fountain of Youth! Cowboy Fast Draw TM is obviously a fountain of youth for all those involved. The Top 5 men competitors were all over 60 with the exception of Ron Martinez and yours truly and I m no spring chicken either. Ray Theilke 3 rd Overall is over 70 and still kicking butt! These great champions still shoot cutting edge competitive times. I have always believed that you never lose your reactions with age as long as you keep them sharp and use them and Cowboy Fast Draw TM is a perfect exercise for keeping your mind sharp. MISSISSIPPI S MESSAGES I want to take a moment and thank all of the competitors for their cooperation at the National Championships. Everyone worked hard during the match to insure safety was respected and enforced. The public was treated to a show of true sportsmanship. Secondly I want to thank my team who not only worked hard during the match but also worked for weeks prior to the event and a few days after the event as well. These folks are disserving of a hand for their dedication to the sport of Cowboy Fast Draw tm and willingness to step up when needed. Thanks guys. Last but not least I wish to thank all of the sponsors who made this years drawing for prizes a huge success. Please support all of the sponsors as they surely supported us this year. Mississippi Marshal CFDA POLICY CLARIFICATIONS Dear CFDA Members & Manufacturers, 5-17-06 #1 It is now CFDA s policy to recommend the use of deflector shields on the bottom of all holsters. This is only a recommendation and is not mandatory. Shooters may place a deflector shield on an existing holster by mounting it between the boot of the holster and the curtain of the Mexican loop holster. This should be done in a manner that is as Page 4
inconspicuous as possible to maintain appearances. The management of CFDA wants to keep Cowboy Fast Draw TM as safe as it can be for all competitors. Mernickle Custom Holsters submitted their Safe Leg design for approval on May 11 th at the CFDA Nationals. The Mernickle model numbers are CFD1, CFD3, and CFD5. All three of these model numbers are now legal for CFDA competition. We encourage all holster makers to provide holsters with either a metal and leather deflector or toe plug. The above design consists of metal sewn between the layers of leather, and is part of the holster construction, previously not allowed under CFDA rules. After discussion with management and the founder of CFDA the decision was made to allow a limited amount of metal to be used only for the purposes of an internally anchored deflector, since it does not constitute a metal liner. The metal must be stitched around so that the dimensions can be verified, the stitching must not exceed 2 vertically from the toe of the holster or be more than 1-1/2 in width. #2 CFDA has established a Logo Policy in order to protect the integrity of our Logo, so that it can be used to promote the sport of Cowboy Fast Draw TM, without denigrating its use for commercial enterprises without the permission of the proprietors of CFDA. Any Sanctioned Club may use the CFDA Logo in the promotion of their club, sanctioned club matches, including literature, advertising, trophies, backstops, trailers, etc.. Any CFDA Member may display the Logo on personal property such as shirts, hats, gun cases, automobiles, RV s, etc. Sanctioned Clubs may use the CFDA Logo on club shooting shirts, caps and T- shirts, as long as it is for the specific use of their club members and is not being marketed to other CFDA clubs, members or being sold to the public. 2. #3 CFDA has established a program in which manufacturers of pre-approved CFDA equipment and merchandise may display the CFDA Approved Logo, though a licensing program. A. The manufacturer must supply a sample of their product to CFDA, which will not be returned. B. The sample must have a model number. C. The manufacturer must agree to not change any specifications of the approved sample without written permission from CFDA. D. Failure to comply with Section C, can result in suspension of approval of any products sold after specifications have been altered and could include the entire model number previous to alterations, so that each unit must be inspected and re-approved on an individual basis. E. It will be the sole decision of CFDA to license commercial CFDA Logo use on an annual or per unit basis. Page 5
#4 Current Rulebook (Page 5) #7 Discharge of the gun in the holster, or shooting the holster, will result in loss of round for first violation. A policy was set at the Nationals that another loss of round will be assessed for a second violation, if a third violation occurs the penalty is Match Disqualification. #5 CFDA has initiated a new Life Membership payment program.
