Natha Waldbaum, of Omaha, Nebraska, got the jump on polesitter Mike Pettiford to take the lead, but Pettiford, was in front by the time the first lap ended. Continued pg.10 June 29th marks the return of a traditional Nebraska Region rally, Bug Squasher. On June 29 the Nebraska Region will return to the TSD (time-speed-distance) rally days of the seventies and eighties with the Bug Squasher Rally. This is an SCCA Touring Rally which means there are no traps, no convoluted logic, no complicated instructions. The directions are designed to keep you from getting lost. The mileage is given at every course following instruction to further reduce the chances of getting lost. This event is designed to be an introduction for novices to TSD rallying while providing a refresher for more experienced teams. The rally will begin and end at Clancy s Pub (777 N. 114th St). Registration is from noon to 12:30. First car off at 1:00. You ll need a working odometer and an accurate timepiece. The route is about 80 miles long through the countryside southwest of Omaha using both paved and good quality unpaved roads. There are some fun to drive roads (Remember, this is Nebraska. Sometimes the roads just go straight!) and there is some nice scenery for the navigators. Jerry Doctor, eventmaster P AGE 1

had when it was just sitting still). I wasn t the only person with keys in my hand, but after a lot of contemplating of all the options he had, to my surprise, Don picked my car to finish his runs. Mirrorkhana XVI (1990) by Ellen Zitzlsperger Mirrorkhana, for those of you who aren t familiar with the event, is where people race people, not clocks. It is a double elimination event that has been held for 30 years in Salina, Kansas. Mirrorkhana is a unique course with two parallel starting lines where one car starts by Ellen Zitzlsperger going north and one starts by going south. Whoever gets back to their starting line first, wins. In 1990, Nebraska Region was 27 strong at the event. The event was plagued (as some events seem to be) with mechanical issues. E.J. Poss had issues with not only his Pantera (turned out to be a fuse) and also his tow vehicle. I don t remember what the issues were with other drivers like Mark Walker and Dave Zitzlsperger, and no doubt a few others who had problems, but I remember clearly the problem with Don Knop s Shelby. Don went out on his first round in the preliminaries Sunday morning and the next thing we knew he was stopped on the course, out of the car, and on his hands and knees peering under the front end. There had been a loud *SNAP!* and it turned out that a lower control arm and motor mount bracket had broken. At least a dozen people went running out onto the course to his aid. Then someone ran back to get a wheeled jack, put it under the left front, and the group slowly pushed the Shelby off the course and back to the pits. It looked more like they were an honor guard escorting a fallen friend rather than just some friends pushing a broken car. If Don had taken the next (90 degree) corner, the wheel might have buckled under, and that beautiful car might have landed on it s shiny black nose. The look on Don s face as the procession entered the pits was more like a parent looking at his child... a child with a broken arm. There was surely no way to fix it in time to go on running and he had obviously lost the first round already. (Remember this is a double elimination event.) Rocky Entriken (the event master) got on the P.A. and told Don to grab another car and motor on. I walked over to Don and held out the keys to my Mustang which was in the same class as his car (although I would have told you it didn t have nearly the class that the Shelby Keep in mind that Don had driven my car twice before during the previous year - once in a fun run and once at a Solo school and that time only in the slalom section. The difference in his Shelby and my Mustang were as different as their colors - black and white. He even had to borrow numbers to use since his white numbers didn t show on my white car. There were 23 years of technological difference in the two cars, not to mention that his Shelby was a coupe and a stick, while my Mustang was a convertible and an automatic. That didn t stop Don. He managed three quick wins in my car to finish the preliminaries and qualify for the finals. I will say it every time someone says that someone else has a better car than they have. It s NOT the car, folks. It s the driver! Once the preliminaries were over there was time before the finals to worry about the Shelby. Maybe there was time to fix it? They loaded it into Bob Woodhouse s trailer and took it to a Salina Region member s shop where they thought maybe they could do something. Sadly, this wasn t the movies. When the car came back under its own power, we all hoped for the best but it had been spot welded good enough to limp it home, not fit enough to let it run the event. So, Don went into the finals in my car. First, he beat Mark Alft. Not an easy thing to do. Next, John LaRandeau went up against Dana Moore (both in Camaros) and it was so close, a lot of us thought maybe the final would be John versus Don. Dana won. Then Don ran against Dana, and I feel obligated here to point out that if Don had been smart, he would have borrowed Dana s car instead of mine. Don won. The final was Don Knop versus Rob Pickrell, and... It was not to be. At Mirrorkhana it is people versus people, not people versus clocks. But at Mirrorkhana XVI in 1990, there wasn t a person there that didn t cheer themselves hoarse or somehow help Don with his movie-worthy fairy tale ride to an almost victory. Second in a 14 car class is not a bad finish. It couldn t have happened without someone to loan him a car to drive, someone to loan him numbers, someone to loan him a wheeled jack, someone to loan him a trailer, and someone to loan him his shop, along with his welding skills, and all of the Nebraska Region entrants to cheer him on! John LaRandeau and I saw that Don limped safely home. Almost 25 years later, I m delighted to see that occasionally Don still brings that proud black beauty out to events. P AGE 3

Starting Line School photos by Jerry Doctor RallyCross by Steve Ducharme RallyCross Chairman Mount St. Helens day was the occasion for the third Nebraska Region RallyCross points event of the year. Twenty-two drivers, many new to RallyCross, chewed up the turf with eight runs each on a beautiful spring day at I- 80 Speedway in Greenville. Steve Ducharme served as course designer and event chair, aided by Kris Martison. The event ran smoothly due in large part to our able and dedicated volunteers safety stewards Jerry Doctor and Shana Hogan, registration chief Matt Cox, timing chief Candy Gerber, and corner worker Chuck Garcia. Class winners included Victor Dixon in prepared front, Dan Beirle in modified front, and Matt Einarsson in prepared rear with his C4 Corvette. Kris took the modified rear trophy in the Cosseboom 325is, over Tony Koester in that delightful Datsun 510. (For you younger readers, a Datsun is a bygone Nissan, not a wiener dog.) In the stock front-wheel drive class, Smooth Jim Wood in the Specialty Auto Civic Si beat Greg Cheney in his Fiesta ST. The all-wheel drive classes were each contested by Subarus. Mark Macoubrie led the prepared class in an STi, ahead of Colin Brandt and Chris Van Middelkoop in 2.5s. Modified class drivers Brandon Suggs in a WRX and Damian Overman in a 2.5 RS were outrun by Lawrence Duty, who asserts that yes, this really is (was?) an Impreza. (See Jerry Doctor s photos to find out why someone might question this.) Four drivers competed in stock all with Alexander Hrdy in a Legacy and John Langholz in a WRX behind a hard-fought duel that ended with Mark Hill s STi just over a second behind class winner Jan Gerber. Rear-wheel drive classes are particularly popular in Nebraska Rallycross, as was evident from the fierce competition in the stock class. Pedro Buenrostro took a commanding lead during the morning runs in his Miata, ahead of Nick Harper and Roman Woolery in a Mustang and Doug Liebman in his Nissan 300 ZX. But Pedro had to work hard to maintain his lead during the afternoon session as the other drivers closed in. The times for the final run spanned less than one second, with Roman Woolery s Mustang fastest by only 26/1000ths over co-driver Nick Harper. When the dust settled, however, Pedro remained victorious, bringing another eventful Sunday drive to a close. We also got a look at site improvements, leveling and grading, that nearly double the usable site area. This is part of the joint effort by the I-80 Speedway owners, con t. page 7 P AGE 5

Membership Report: Julie Heaton presented membership report. 9 new members and 23 people signed up for the Starting Line School, 14 of which are new members. Solo Report: First solo went well. Approx 86 entrants. The heats were based on who had already server their worker assignments with setup, etc. and assigning the rest of the available workers evenly across the heats. This seemed to work well, so looking to keep these same heats all year and just rotate their order.jerry Doctor brought up that the list of weekend memberships given to him to assist with Points was inaccurate, so he wants to make sure that the weekend memberships are being submitted properly. Discussion on fun event solo to be held in Hastings. RallyCross Report: The site has been graded, but not packed or seeded. The light post is being removed so the available area will be almost doubling in size. Justin Fisher Road Rally Report: Jerry Doctor reported that he is working on the rally for late June. Planning to meet criteria so that it qualifies for points for National Rally Competition. Exhaust Notes Report: Patt Buell reported that the notes are in the mail. Coming up with a press release format for important information. Social Report: Check Garcia reports World of Wheels went well for recruiting, etc. Few people from there did show up at the solo. Club Racing Report: Working with DMVR on races. I80 challenge to be run for the races this year for the bonus races.
