SCARBORO ECHO Edition 327 17th October 2013 From the President It was great to see our Juniors and cadets/youthies back around the club last Sunday. We had fabulous weather which was no doubt an incentive for families to come down. A big thank you to all those who helped out with the beach clean up through the 'Keep Australia Beautiful' Group who coordinated the event. Thanks to Michelle in the office, Nick Stewart and Mic Nielsen who got us on board with that initiative. An apology for those that missed out on a sausage, we were caught short with the great weather. This week the juniors will be at Newman College pool to complete their proficiencies, we will ensure we have plenty of snags at that one. The kids will also receive their shirts for the season. In This Issue Juniors, Ski Skribble and Boaties Banter Important Dates What s On Life Saving/ Patrols Club Calendar It's particularly important for all our under 14 and 15 members who wish to do their SRC this year to be at Newman, as a 200m pool swim is mandatory and you must have your SRC to take part in patrols and ultimately compete at States and Aussies. Very important as Aussies will be on our beach. A great opportunity for our youth to take part in the national competition. Be sure to visit Kathy in the clothing shop this week. She has some new stock coming in for summer. On another note, please make Rin our new canteen manager welcome. Rin has come down from Kinky Lizard to help us out and is terrific on the coffee machine. She is also bringing some fresh cakes and bakery items down each week for us to enjoy. Unfortunately, as we can no longer run the canteen with volunteers we have had to put some of our prices up to cover costs but I think you'll find we are still cheaper than many of the local cafes. In the interests of our families the sausage sizzle will remain at the same low prices. We appreciate all constructive feed back on what we offer but remind all our members that the club is mostly run by volunteers and any contribution to lighten the load will be appreciated also. This Sunday we have an Ironman and Beach carnival at Scarboro. If you are able to help we are looking for helpers with set up, pack up as well as officials and first aid. Please report to Bob or Alan at 7am at the club. Good luck to all our competitors. See you on the beach, Elise.
Juniors Great day on the beach for the start of our season, nice and sunny and with a bit of wave running,. Huge effort by all with the Keep Australia Beautiful Council, Beach cleanup day, with lots of litter collected and I am sure the saving of a few marine animals in the process. Pictures below. Just a reminder to all to be mindful of conditions on the beach after Sunday morning activities, with children swimming unsupervised, at this time of the year we usually have very strong rips and currents running along the shore and can very quickly catch kids unaware, so when we finish on the beach for the morning and you and your kids want a swim, please move up to the patrolled area in between the flags, which is the safest area to swim. Dates to remember: 20/10/2013 Junior Proficiency @ Newman College Pool, Empire Ave Churchlands, entry via gold coin donation. 22/10/2013 Junior starts. 5.45am for a 6.00am start on the beach. Tuesdays and Thursdays. 25/10/2013 Scarboro SLSC season opener, Superheroes and Princess evening, in the club hall, this starts at 4.30pm, with bouncy castle, bucking bronco, so get out your favorite super hero costume and get the kids kitted out and come on down, food also available, see flyer in this newsletter. Parents wanting to do their SRC (Surf Rescue Certificate), give your contact details to your kids age group manager or myself, looking at a start in early November, when conditions on the beach improve. All Parents will receive a letter from the club advising them of their roster for either canteen duty, BBQ duty and beach packup duties, if you cant make your roster you will need to find a proxy to fill your position, as it is critical to the smooth running of the club to have these positions filled each week. See ya on the beach Mic Nielsen 0413 053 161
Ski Skribble Weather has improved somewhat this week, well for Tuesday anyway. Thurs and weekend forecast looks a bit grim. But we are now well into our regular training pattern for the season. Saturday is at the club and on the water by 7.30am, late comers can catch up. Sunday is at the club and on the water by 8.30am, late comers can catch up. Understood there are some who will be paddling at Sorrento on Saturdays, your choice. Training program is on the ski paddlers notice board in ski shed. Boaties Banter Great effort at Secret Harbour for the first carnival on Sunday. We fielded 3 crews: U23 lads Crew RAAH, and Open Womens crews, the Shadows and Submarines, competing against 3 Nth Cott womens and 4 men crews. Up for grabs were 3 Triple Crown Spots, meaning travel and accommodation subsidy to Queensland and Victoria for the best 3 WA John Wrights effort at Secret Harbour on the weekend crews. The boys were extremely unlucky colliding with a Nth Cott boat, causing gasps from the crowd, a bruise or two and some repairs for the boat shed. The shore-dumper was tricky and gnarly... and more than one boatie/sweep went for a swim. In big surf, the Shadows secured second place and the Submarines 3 rd, which is a great start to the season showing the crews are in the mix at a national level and definitely on pace. We ll need a number of people to help with setting up and running the events. A small workforce and an IRB will be needed from about 6:30am to set up the arena. Water safety, first aid and carnival officials will be needed during the course of the events. While this isn t a huge carnival, the more help the better. If you re a recently accredited official, and we ll need about five it ll be a good chance to gain some experience under the watchful gaze of head referee Bob Blake! Thanks Alan Carville
