October 14 th Parent Teacher Conferences 17 th No School! 24 th Box Top Contest ends 24 th Haunted House Field Trip 31 st Trip to PHS for White Christmas Math Department News We are finishing up first quarter and heading into second quarter. All math students can be using a scientific calculator. Please make sure your student puts their name on their calculator. Also, we are having some students that are forgetting their homework. Check with your student each night to see if their homework is complete. We have homework help in the library every morning and your student can get extra help during Academic Focus. From the Nurse s Desk Everyone 6 months and older should get an annual flu vaccine. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for your body to develop full protection against the flu. Get vaccinated by October to protect yourself and your loved ones! (For more vaccine and virus information visit www.cdc.gov) Thank you to our parents for having Riverbend Students 100% compliant with our Tdap vaccinations. COUNSELOR S CORNER Ms. Henry Guidance Lessons September s guidance lesson focused on respecting others and KINDNESS. We introduced Rachel s Challenge, talked about dreams for the future, and students started a chain reaction of kindness. Please continue to speak to your student about kindness and respecting each other, despite our differences. Encourage your student to fill out a Speak-Up Form to report bullying. Small Group Guidance Starting soon.small group anger management for boys and art therapy self-esteem/coping skills group for girls. Each group will last 6-8 weeks and will be run by a preferred family/art-counselor, the groups will meet once a week during students Academic Focus class. If you would like your student to participate, please contact the school counselor for more information. I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same. People will never know how far a little kindness can go. Rachelschallenge.org -Rachel Joy Scott Happy fall! - Katie Henry, Guidance Counselor Character Council Ms. Henry A special thanks to the Character Council students who walked in the homecoming parade to represent Riverbend School. We will hold officer elections in October. Character Council students need to turn in a t-shirt order form to Ms. Henry ASAP. Book Club The book club is reading The False Prince. Below is a brief description of the book. In the country of Carthya, a devious nobleman engages four orphans in a brutal competition to be selected to impersonate the king's long-missing son in an effort to avoid a civil war. Gym Stars for the Month of October In History we are finishing Chapter 3 and we are making a Colonial Brochure. Next we will be starting on The Road To The Revolution. History Corner Students of the Month October Cherokee: Emma D. Austin C. Choctaw: Maddie K. Michael G. Congratulations! Thank you for being great citizens of our Riverbend Community! Kayla M. and Trevor H. Ms. Henry, Austin, Michael, Maddie, Emma and Mrs. Armstrong.

I am happy to report that we have another great group of students for our club this year! We plan on going on a field trip to the Early Childhood Center to interact and visit with the toddlers, possibly around the holidays. We are also planning for the Pacific Fire Department to give a safety presentation to our club and looking into the idea of taking a weekend infant/child CPR course. There will be more to come! I look forward to sponsoring our Nanny Club again this year! Sincerely, Mrs. Hendricks Just the F.A.C.S.
