SUMMER OF CHANGE: New and returning faces highlight the 2006-07 Grizzlies training camp roster, including the rookie trio of Rudy Gay, Kyle Lowry and Alexander Johnson. A recap of the Grizzlies offseason additions is below: Date Transaction _ June 28 Selected Kyle Lowry in the first round (24 th overall) of the 2006 NBA Draft June 28 Acquired the draft rights to Alexander Johnson from Portland (via Indiana) in exchange for a 2008 second round pick July 12 Acquired Stromile Swift and the draft rights to Rudy Gay (eighth pick in the 2006 NBA Draft) in exchange for Shane Battier July 13 Signed rookie free agent Tarence Kinsey OPENING NIGHT, EARLY SEASON STRUGGLES: The Grizzlies have never won an opening night game since the team s move to Memphis prior to the 2001-02 season, posting an 0-5 record in that span. The Grizzlies have won only two opening night games in franchise history: Oct. 31/00 - @ Grizzlies (Vancouver) 94, Sonics 88; Nov. 5/95 Grizzlies (Vancouver) 92, @ Portland 80 (*Grizzlies inaugural NBA game). Consequently the Grizzlies have developed a history of rough starts over the years, posting a winning record through their first five games of the season on only two occasions in franchise history: FIRST FIVE GAMES WON LOST 1995-96 2 3 1996-97 0 5 1997-98 1 4 1998-99 2 3 1999-00 2 3 2000-01^ 4 1 2001-02 0 5 2002-03 0 5 2003-04 2 3 2004-05 1 4 2005-06^ 3 2 TOTAL* 17 38 *Overall winning percentage through first five games =.309 ^Only two winning records through first five games of a season in franchise history INTERNATIONAL PAU-ER LEADS SPAIN TO GOLD; GRIZZ PAU-ERLESS START TO SEASON: Pau Gasol and the Spanish National Team captured their first world title in international competition in the 2006 FIBA World Championships. Despite missing the championship game after suffering a broken bone in his left foot in the semifinals, Gasol was selected as the tournament s MVP. Gasol also finished as the tournament s third leading scorer (21.3 ppg) and second leading rebounder (9.4 rpg). The Grizzlies will now have to find a way to make up for Gasol s absence after posting one of the best seasons of his young career in 2005-06. After finishing his fifth NBA season, Gasol found himself ranked among the top 20 in the league in over 15 statistical categories, and among a number of the Western Conference s elite forwards. The Grizzlies streak of 12 losses without a victory is the longest for any team before it s first playoff win in NBA history, and also stands as the league s record for consecutive playoff losses overall. The previous record was 11 consecutive postseason losses, set by the Denver Nuggets (1988-1994) and the Baltimore Bullets (1965-70). The Grizzlies and Nuggets join the Portland Trail Blazers (10 consecutive postseason losses from 2000-2003) as the only three teams over the last 20 years to have lost 10 or more consecutive postseason games. GRIZZ STELLAR AT FEDEXFORUM; POST SECOND-MOST HOME WINS IN FRANCHISE HISTORY: Winners of 12 of their final 13 regular season games at home in 2006 (including a streak of five consecutive home wins to close out the regular season), the Grizzlies record at FedExForum during the regular season improved to 30-11 extending the mark for the second-most home victories in a single season in franchise history. It marked the fourth consecutive season the team has won 20 games or better at home. The Grizzles are 122-83 (.595) at home since relocating to Memphis prior to the 2001-02 season (158-236 record (.401) at home in Vancouver from 1995-96 through 2000-01).

GRIZZ FINISH 2005-06 SEASON AS LEAGUE S BEST DEFENSIVE TEAM: The Grizzlies held the Timberwolves to 76 points on 41.3% shooting in a victory at FedExForum on Apr. 11/06, marking the 21 st time they held an opponent to 80 points or less last season while improving their record in those games to a near perfect 20-1. Consequently, the Grizzlies defensive performances late in the season helped propel them to the top as the league s best scoring defense, holding opponents to 88.5 ppg last season. GRIZZLIES IN THE COMMUNITY : GRIZZLIES READ TO ACHIEVE TIP-OFF Grizzlies players, dance team members and team mascot Grizz joined students at Grahamwood Elementary on Oct. 30 for the team s annual Read to Achieve Tip-Off. Players and students took part in a special reading assembly and the Grizzlies will also made a book donation to the school. Grahamwood Elementary was selected to host this season s Tip-Off after having the most participation in last year s Grizzlies Reading Challenge, a four-week program for first through fourth grade students to encourage reading outside of the classroom. The NBA s Read to Achieve program encourages young people to develop a life-long love for reading and reaches 50 million children a year. The program includes the annual donation of more than 250,000 books through a variety of reading events and book fairs. Through the Read to Achieve program, the league has created more than 100 Reading and Learning Centers worldwide in an effort to provide access to reading materials and technology to young people everywhere. The Grizzlies will continue to host reading assemblies throughout the season at various elementary schools in Memphis and Shelby and Desoto Counties.

GRIZZLIES HEAD COACH, MIKE FRATELLO Mike Fratello joined the Grizzlies on December 2, 2004, becoming the seventh head coach in franchise history. Fratello came to the Grizzlies as one of the NBA s most successful coaches in history, ranking 19 th on the all-time wins list and 21 st on the all-time games coached list when he joined the team. A 16-year coaching veteran, his teams have qualified for the NBA playoffs in 11 of his 16 seasons as a head coach. His success carried over immediately into his position with the Grizzlies. The team went 9-6 after he took over in December 2004, then went an incredible 12-3 in January 2005, earning Fratello the NBA s Western Conference Coach of the Month Award. He earned his 600 th career win as a head coach on March 4, 2005, only the 19 th coach all-time to reach the 600-win plateau. He finished out the regular season by guiding the Grizzlies to their second winning season, and second playoff appearance. His second season with the Grizzlies was equally impressive. With a roster that had been overhauled prior to the season, and the loss of Damon Stoudamire in December to a season-ending knee injury, the team still won more games than they did the previous season, and qualified for the playoffs for the third year in a row. Their winning ways led to Fratello passing Hubie Brown in April as the winningest coach in franchise history.
