2005 bronco soccer COACHING STAFF Head Coach Eighth Season Kalamazoo College, 1993 Postseason appearances for the Western Michigan w o m e n s soccer program have become the norm under eighth-year head coach Mike Haines. Mid-American Conference Tournament Champions in 2003, the Broncos are one of only three teams to advance to the league tourney every year since 1997 and have reached the semifinals in three of the last five campaigns. Since taking over the fledgling program, Haines has directed the Broncos to a plethora of team and individual successes, highlighted by the program s first-ever MAC Tournament title and NCAA Championship appearance in 2003. The Broncos posted an overall mark of 11-6-4 in 2004 and recorded their sixth-straight campaign with a.500-orbetter record in league action. Seven of the team s wins came on the road (7-1-2), but the biggest victory came against Ball State at the WMU Soccer Complex in the opening round of the MAC Tournament. Three Broncos were named to the All-MAC squads and academic recognition, which has also become habit of Broncos student-athletes, was received by several players. In 2003, WMU posted a 14-8-1 overall record, the most wins in school history, and was undefeated in 10 home matches. The team s accomplishments led to individual honors, including regional and national recognition. The Broncos posted an impressive win over Bowling Green in the championship match of the league tournament and went on to defeat nationally ranked Illinois on its home field in the opening round of the NCAA Championship. The 2002 season had several highlights, topped by the squad s first place finish at the inaugural Bronco Soccer Classic, which was hosted by WMU. The program once again finished among the top teams in the conference and advanced to the league tournament. WMU, known for its defensive strengths under Haines, provided record-setting offensive exploits in 2001. The Broncos tallied 13 goals en route to the Binghamton Adidas Soccer Classic title, the program s first-ever tournament championship of any kind. The Broncos posted an overall record of 10-9-2 in 2000 and Haines guided the squad to its first-ever MAC Tournament Semifinals appearance. That run included an opening round victory over rival Central Michigan, WMU s first tourney win in program history. WMU finished 10-9-1 overall in 1999, earning a spot in the Mid-American Conference Tournament. During the course of the season the Broncos collected wins over UNLV, Valparaiso and Northern Illinois. In 1998, the Broncos earned Haines his first career win at WMU with a 2-1 decision over Detroit in the second 13 match of the year. A 2-0 victory over rival Central Michigan highlighted a campaign that also included wins over Valparaiso, BGSU and Kent. Haines was no stranger to the Kalamazoo area community when he was named head women s soccer coach at WMU on August 11, 1998. The Kalamazoo native directed the Kalamazoo Quest through their inaugural season in the W-2 League of the United Systems of Independent Soccer Leagues (USISL). The W-League, consisting of pro and collegiate players, is the highest level of women s soccer being played in the United States. For two seasons, Haines coached across the street at Kalamazoo College, directing the women s team to a 32-3- 3 record and a pair of second place conference finishes. His 1997 squad captured a school-record 18 wins and reached the NCAA III Tournament. Haines coaching success also extends to the prep ranks, where twice he has been honored on the state level first as Class C Private School Coach of the Year for the boy s team at Hackett Catholic Central in 1995 then as Class B-C-D Coach of the Year for the Hackett girls in 1996. Haines led Hackett to the 1995 Class C boys title with a 22-2 record and guided the Irish girls to three consecutive state finals (1996-98) with an overall record of 67-4. Haines received his bachelor s degree from Kalamazoo College in 1993. He lettered four seasons for the Hornets (1989-92), earning All-MIAA Second Team honors twice and captaining the 1992 squad. He holds a USSF "C" coaching license. Haines married the former Kristen Cooper in August, 1998 and the couple has two daughters, Kasey (3) and Anna (2). Assistant Coach Second Season Butler, 2000 The 2005 campaign will mark Matt Kellogg s second with the Western Michigan women s program. Kellogg worked with the men s and women s teams on a volunteer basis in 2004 and has played a key role in the program s summer camps for the past two years. Kellogg has been heavily involved in the West Michigan soccer community for several years. He has held coaching positions with the Michigan Olympic Development Program, Kalamazoo Kingdom and Plainwell High School. He also served as the head women s coach at Kalamazoo College in 2003. Eight of the student-athletes he recruited went on to earn all-conference accolades. A native of East Lansing, Mich., Kellogg was a member of the men s soccer team (1996-98) at Butler University, where he graduated with a degree in marketing. He is a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and holds a National "C" License.
