Thank you for your interest in Washington State University and the Spirit Squad! The WSU cheerleaders and dancers perform at all home football games, men s and women s basketball games, and volleyball matches. In addition to these games, the cheerleaders and dancers are required to be at many functions, ranging from pep rallies to alumni gathering or charity events. Members of the WSU spirit squad are excellent ambassadors of Washington State University and the Department of Athletics. WSU cheerleaders and dancers travel to many away football games within the Pac-10 and additional games across the country. Next year we are looking forward to traveling to the San Antonio, Texas, to play Notre Dame. We will also cheer for our basketball teams at the PAC-10 tournaments in Los Angeles. WSU has one co-ed cheerleading squad and one all-female competitive dance team, the Crimson Girls. The cheer squad will have approximately 12 males and 12 females, and the dance team will have 14-16 female dancers. Dance tryouts will be Saturday, April 17 th, and cheer tryouts will be Saturday, April 24 th. Incoming freshman or incoming transfer students who have been admitted to WSU, as well as current WSU students in good standing, will be eligible to try out. Members of both teams should be prepared for the possibility of going to camp at the end of summer, and must be back in Pullman one full week before classes start for the beginning of practices. During the Fall and Spring Semesters, practices are held three times per week. In addition to practice, all squad members are required to participate in a weight training program. Participation in the WSU Spirit Squad is not to be considered lightly, as it is a very time-consuming activity. For example, during the month of November, we have football, volleyball, men s and women s basketball active at the same time. The Spirit Squad is financially supported by the Athletic Department, but there is some fundraising responsibility for each squad member. Spirit Squad members receive a stipend for being on the team, which increases every year you continue with the program. Cheering and dancing at WSU has many rewards. It is an opportunity to be a part of Cougar Spirit and many athletic events. It is an opportunity to meet people of all ages and to work as a team. Spirit Squad members are sometimes asked to perform during Christmas and Spring Breaks, so you must be prepared for this possibility. Attached you will find more general information regarding the 2010/2011 WSU Crimson Girls tryouts. Please feel free to look over this packet and contact me if you have any further questions. Please call or e-mail me at iwang@wsu.edu or 509-335-0244. GO COUGS! WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU AT TRYOUTS! Ivy Wang, Spirit Program Coordinator, WSU Athletics 1
