Royals vs. Redbirds This series changes venues tonight as the Royals were swept in the two games at The K, the first time St. Louis has done that since 2013...KC trails the all-time series by a 39-53 margin, but holds a 20-19 lead in St. Louis, 15-12 in new Busch Stadium. Date Site Score WP LP Att. 8/7 KC L, 3-11 Martinez Kennedy *38,478 8/8 KC L, 3-10 Wacha Vargas 37,267 8/9 @ StL 8/10 @ StL TWO SIX PACKS TOO MANY--Things didn t go particularly well in the first two games for KC back at The K as the Redbirds scored six runs in the fifth inning last night to cruise to a 10-3 win over the Royals... the 6-run fifth was a mirror image of the 6-run fourth that sank Kansas City in the series opener on Monday... the Royals had jumped out to a 3-1 lead when the newly activated Cheslor Cuthbert cleared the bases with a 2-out, 3-run double in the fourth, but the Cards erupted for six in the top of the fifth off of Jason Vargas and Mike Minor then never looked back...vargas, falling to 13-6 on the year, was charged with six runs on eight hits in 4.2 innings...the loss dropped the Royals to four games behind the division leading Indians in the Central, while the Mariners and Rays have tied KC for the second Wild Card spot. ROADIE BEGINS--Tonight continues this 4-game set while also kicking off an 8-game journey...the Royals will leave here tomorrow night and head to Chicago for a 3-game set against the White Sox and then turn left and travel back to the bay area for a final time in 17 for a 3-game series in Oakland...once this trip is completed, the Royals will return to Kauffman Stadium where they ll play nine of 12 games against Cleveland (3) and Colorado (3), then make a weekend trip to Cleveland on August 25-27 before returning to The K for three against Tampa Bay to closeout August...KC will wrap up the regular season with 13 home games and 17 road affairs in September. 50 REMAINING--Kansas City enters tonight with just 50 games left on the 2017 regular season docket, 22 in Kauffman Stadium and 28 roadies...the composite record for KC s remaining opponents is 613-629 for a.494 winning pct...the Royals have eight games remaining with a trio of National League opponents, St. Louis (2), Colorado (3) and Arizona (3), who have a combined ledger of 185-153 entering tonight for a.547 winning pct...kansas City has 32 games left with clubs from within the A.L. Central including Cleveland (10), Chicago (9), Minnesota (7) and Detroit (6)...the four A.L. Central rivals have a combined mark of 208-235 for a.470 winning pct... the remaining non-central squads on KC s schedule is Oakland (3), Tampa Bay (3), Toronto (3) and the Yankees (1), who have a combined record of 220-230, a.489 pct. INTERLEAGUE DROUGHT--For the first time since June 27-July 2, 2011, the Royals have lost five straight games against National League competition...the last dry spell consisted of a 3-game sweep at the hands of the Padres in San Diego and then losses in the first two games of a visit to Colorado...in this drought, Kansas City dropped the final three affairs prior to the All-Star break in Dodger Stadium, then resumed Interleague play with consecutive losses at hone to the Cardinals...KC is now 5-7 vs. the Senior Circuit this year with eight remaining...the Redbirds were only the second N.L. club to visit Kauffman Stadium this season, as KC split a 2-game visit from San Francisco way back in the first homestand of 2017...after this visit to Busch Stadium, only six Interleague games remaining and all at The K with Colorado coming to town on August 22-24 and the Arizona Diamondbacks closing out the regular season on September 29-October 1. ACE 30 REMEMBERING YO--The morning of January 22, 2017 will always be remembered as one of the most tragic days in franchise history when word was received that pitcher Yordano Ventura had his life cut short due to a car accident in his native Dominican Republic...signed as a 17-year old in 2008, the fireballing right-hander compiled a 38-31 during his abbreviated Major League career...among many highlights, Ace will be most remembered for blanking the San Francisco Giants over 7.0 innings in Game #6 of the 2014 World Series to force a seventh and deciding game, while pitching with a heavy heart himself due to the untimely passing of his friend Oscar Tavares...to honor the late Ventura, all uniforms in 2017 will be adorned with the ACE 30 patch. LONGBALL STORY--Home runs have been an issue of late for Cahill as he s allowed seven in his last five starts (2.63 HR/9.0 IP)...Trevor allowed just three roundtrippers in his first eight outings (0.59 HR/9.0 IP), for the 12th-lowest rate through July 4 of this year (min. 45.0 IP)...his career home run rate (0.92) still ranks 18th among active right-handed pitchers (min. 1200 IP). This & That HAPPY BIRTHDAY DREW--Kansas City catcher Drew Butera is celebrating his 34th birthday today...now in his eighth big league season, Butera shares his birthday with the likes of actresses Anna Kendrick (32) and Melanie Griffith (60), football s Deion Sanders (50) and baseball brethren Jason Heyward (28), the father of the Chiefs new QB and former big league pitcher Pat Mahomes (47) and a trio of alumni of our hosts here in St. Louis, Matt Morris (43), Julian Javier (81) and Ted Simmons (68). STILL GOING--Kansas City s energizer bunny, Alcides Escobar, has made a club-record 283 consecutive starts at shortstop dating back to September 26, 2015, the longest active streak in the Majors, according to the Elias Sports Bureau...by starting tonight, Esky will tie Baltimore s Miguel Tejada with 284 consecutive starts from April 4, 2004 through August 20, 2005, as the last Major League team to have the same starting shortstop in that many consecutive games...should Esky get to 285 tomorrow, he will have the longest such streak since Cal Ripken started 2,216 consecutive games at short for the Orioles from 1982 to 1996. HOMERLESS LAST NIGHT--All three Kansas City runs last night came on one swing of the bat by Cheslor Cuthbert, who doubled with the bases loaded, just a night after all three Royal tallies on Monday were via the solo homer...kc has hit eight roundtrippers in the last four games and has hit 42 in the last 31 contests...with 140 home runs through the first 112 games, the Royals are on a pace for 202 roundtrippers this year, which would demolish previous single-season record of 168 in 1987. ANOTHER ROUGH PATCH--The year known as The Streak continues as now the Royals are in the midst of a stretch in which they ve dropped eight of 11 after winning a season high nine in a row from July 19-28...the year began with KC going 10-20 in the first 30 affairs, including a 9-game losing streak toward the end of April...then from May 8 in Tampa Bay until June 9 in San Diego, the Royals played around the.500 mark, going 16-14 before turning it up a notch in the middle game of a visit to Petco Park...from June 10-July 30, Kansas City was 29-14, the second best record in the Majors in that span to only the Dodgers, who tore through baseball with a 37-6 mark...despite the last 11 dates, Kansas City s 35-25 record since June 1 is the second best mark in the Majors to the Dodgers 46-12 ledger...in that span, the Royals have gone 11-5 with three splits in the 19 series played...since the start of the 2014 season, Kansas City and Baltimore are tied for the most wins in the American League with 322. MOOSE CLOSING IN--One of the most talked about records in franchise history is Steve Balboni s 36 home runs in 1985, which still stands today as the most in franchise history...if Mike Moustakas has anything to say about it, that record will fall in 2017...Moose clubbed his 32nd home run of the year on Monday night, second in as many days, to pull to within four of the coveted mark...moustakas enters play tonight on a pace for 46 blasts, which would shatter Balboni s 32-year mark... Moose s 32 home runs are the most by a Royal since Jermaine Dye finished the 2000 season with 33...Moustakas is now second in the A.L. home run chase behind the Yankees Aaron Judge (35)...Moose is second in the American League in road home runs with 18, two behind Tampa Bay s Logan Morrison. HOME & ROAD WORK--With last night s loss, Kansas City is 7-4 in its last 11 home games and is now 32-27 in The K...as for road work, after a rocky 2-11 start to road action this year, the Royals have played at a.575 clip (23-17) away from home since May 8, the second best road record in the Majors in that span (Houston 29-10)...KC went 5-4 on the last road trip, but it was a bittersweet 5-4, going 5-1 through Detroit and Boston to open the journey before losing all three games in Baltimore to close it out. THE BEST IN LEATHER--The Royals were guilty of an error last night giving them seven in the last 17 games while they continue to pace Major League baseball with only 46 errors on the year...miami is next in the Majors with 49, while the Twins, Tribe and Angels all have the second fewest in the American League with 57...the Royals are currently on a pace to shatter the franchise record for fewest errors in a season, with the 162-game club mark of 85 set in 2013...the 1981 and 1994 squads had lower error totals of 72 and 80, respectively, but each were recorded in strike-shortened seasons...at the current pace this year, KC would commit just 66 errors. FAMILIAR VIEW FROM ABOVE--The Royals hit the road still in possession of the #1 television rating among all Major League clubs, holding an 8.5 household rating this year on FOX Sports Kansas City...KC has led the Majors in TV ratings in each of the last two seasons leading up to 2017...last night s game on FS 1 carried a 9.0 household rating in Kansas City, while Monday s game on FSKC recorded a 12.5 MOYLO STREAK HALTED--Reliever Peter Moylan left a runner aboard when he departed in the eighth inning on Monday night and that runner eventually crossed the plate for the first earned runs charged to him since June 25 vs. Toronto...in that span, he has now allowed one earned run in 16.2 innings for a 0.54 ERA, while holding opposing hitters to a collective.105 mark (6-for-57)...the inventor of the Sledge-iatto has inherited more runners than any reliever in the Majors (47). DUPE S #1--KC replay specialist Bill Duplissea has not been tested since July 29 in Fenway Park and after a lengthy delay it was determined there wasn t enough evidence to overturn the call...duper is 16-for-22 for a 73% success rate, the only Major League replay reviewer with a percentage above 70%...Bill closed 2016 as the best in baseball at his craft with a 69.2% success rate, making good on 27 of 39 challenges, with the Mets next at 67.7% (21-for-31). AT THE HELM--The winningest manager in franchise history, Ned Yost is in his seventh full season with the club, taking the reins on May 13, 2010...he enters tonight a game over.500 with a 606-605 record with Kansas City, which is a big accomplishment considering he had a 198-253 mark in his first two+ seasons in charge, but is since 408-352 (.537)...his win total has shattered Whitey Herzog s previous team mark of 410 wins (1975-79)...Yost is the 16th full-time manager in franchise history and is seventh among active managers is games (2,170) and wins (1,063)...his postseason record of 22-9 represents a.710 winning pct., which is tops among all managers who have been at the helm for at least 20 postseason games...he s also 2-0 in managing the American League All-Star team, winning in both Cincinnati ( 15) and San Diego ( 16), the last two times the home field advantage was determined by the All-Star outcome...this is his second stint as a big league manager after nearly six full campaigns at the helm for the Milwaukee Brewers (2003-2008)...he compiled a 457-502 record with the Brew Crew including a 166-146 mark in his last two seasons...yost, a catcher during his playing days, began his coaching career in the Atlanta organization, including 12 straight seasons on Bobby Cox s big league staff (1991-2002). vs. Cardinals (2017) vs. Cardinals (career) On Road (career) Leake (career) Lynn (career) Player AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI Bonifacio.000 3 0 0 0 Butera.167 6 1 0 0 Cabrera.375 8 3 0 0 Cain.286 7 2 0 0 Cuthbert.500 4 2 0 3 Escobar.000 8 0 0 0 Gallagher Gordon.000 4 0 0 0 Hosmer.143 7 1 1 1 Merrifield.250 8 2 0 0 Moss.250 4 1 1 1 Moustakas.250 8 2 1 1 Interleague Hitting (Career) Player AVG AB H HR RBI Alexander.000 2 0 0 0 Bonifacio.250 28 7 1 6 Butera.235 98 23 2 8 Cabrera.265 781 207 12 83 Cahill.100 20 2 0 0 Cain.278 288 80 7 35 Cuthbert.246 61 15 1 7 Duffy.125 16 2 0 1 Escobar.289 557 161 5 50 Feliz.000 2 0 0 0 Gallagher Gordon.285 583 166 23 73 Hammel.094 32 3 0 2 Hosmer.265 434 115 10 58 Kennedy.105 19 2 0 1 Maurer.000 1 0 0 0 Merrifield.244 86 21 1 10 Minor.077 13 1 0 0 Moss.229 353 81 19 54 Moustakas.294 360 106 13 48 Vargas.190 21 4 0 1.000 3 0 0 0.154 13 2 0 0.222 108 24 1 8.273 77 21 0 5.222 18 4 0 5.251 195 49 1 16.325 157 51 10 27.200 120 24 1 9.200 25 5 0 1.277 94 26 2 13.305 82 25 4 10.268 157 42 8 23.201 483 97 12 50.287 3091 888 68 352.277 1340 371 29 143.238 294 70 9 20.253 2403 608 16 189.258 2591 668 79 275.285 1967 560 64 259.281 310 87 4 25.243 1553 378 87 243.246 1518 373 63 185 Starting Pitchers Breakdown Total KC Avg.
